The discontinued Seiko SKX009J1 and first-generation SBDC001 Sumo make a choice between uncomplicated character and a more substantial, refined-feeling watch. The SKX009J1’s blue-and-red bezel and stripped-down appeal are its strongest arguments; the SBDC001 brings a larger, sculpted case and, according to the comparison, a more capable movement. There is no objective winner here: the better pick depends on whether you prize simplicity or added features and presence.
Two discontinued Seiko divers, with different appeals
This matchup is specifically between the blue-dial SKX009J1 and the black-dial, first-generation SBDC001 Sumo. Fratello’s November 2023 comparison describes both as discontinued and says the SKX009J1 was discontinued in 2020. Seiko’s own brochure notes that the watch that became known as the Sumo first appeared in 2007: “Not long after its first appearance in 2007, this watch was given the name ‘Sumo’ by its many fans.” Seiko’s Sumo brochure
The SBDC001 should not be confused with later Sumo references. For example, Seiko’s page for the later SBDC083 lists a 6R35 movement and approximately 70-hour power reserve; those are not SBDC001 specifications. Seiko SBDC083 product page
Movement: simpler operation or more functions?
Fratello identifies the SKX009J1 as using Seiko’s 7S26 automatic caliber, which it says does not offer manual winding or hacking. Hacking means the seconds hand stops when setting the time, making synchronization easier. The comparison identifies the SBDC001’s caliber as the 6R15 and reports a 50-hour power reserve. These are the comparison’s reported specifications, rather than claims drawn here from a manufacturer specification sheet.
#1 Best Overall
- WATER-RESISTANT: these water-resistant men's dive watches are ISO scuba-approved to depths of 200 meters
- AUTOMATIC: these self-winding, automatic men's watches are powered by your movement, with a power reserve of 41 hours
- STAINLESS STEEL: features a durable 43.8mm stainless steel watch case and bracelet.
- LUMIBRITE DISPLAY: this men's automatic watch features a highly-legible display with LumiBrite hands and markers
- 4R35 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable caliber 4R35 automatic movement, this accurate men's watch keeps precise time
On those terms, the Sumo has the practical edge if hand-winding and a longer reserve matter to you. The SKX’s appeal is not extra functionality, but its straightforward character. The comparison’s author favors the Sumo’s movement; that is an editorial preference, not a finding from a controlled performance test.
Case size and wrist presence
The comparison reports the SBDC001 at 45 mm wide, 13.5 mm thick, and 51 mm from lug to lug. It describes curved lugs and a bezel set into the case, giving the Sumo a more sculpted appearance. Those dimensions indicate a substantial watch, but the numbers alone cannot determine comfort: wrist shape, strap or bracelet, and personal taste all affect how a watch wears.

- WATER-RESISTANT: these water-resistant men's dive watches are ISO scuba-approved to depths of 200 meters
- AUTOMATIC: these self-winding, automatic men's watches are powered by your movement, with a power reserve of 41 hours
- LUMIBRITE DISPLAY: this men's dive watch features a highly-legible display with LumiBrite hands and markers

- 4R36 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable caliber 4R36 automatic movement, this accurate men's watch keeps precise time
The cited comparison does not provide a matching set of case measurements for the SKX009J1, so a precise size-versus-size verdict is not established here. Visually, the choice is clearer: the Sumo’s larger, more shaped case makes a bolder impression, while the SKX’s design reads as more spare.
Dial and bezel: black-and-steel presence versus blue and red
The SKX009J1 pairs a blue dial with a blue-and-red bezel, a distinctive color combination that is central to its identity. The SBDC001 in this comparison has a black dial and a more integrated-looking bezel. Choose the SKX if the color and uncomplicated tool-watch look are the draw; choose the Sumo if you prefer a more sculpted case and restrained dial-and-bezel palette. Which design looks better is subjective, and the comparison’s contributors openly favor different watches.

What the comparison’s contributors prefer
Fratello’s head-to-head is a preference-led argument, not a definitive technical test. One contributor makes the case for the SKX’s stripped-down simplicity; the other favors the Sumo for its movement, design, and build quality. Those assessments describe their authors’ opinions, not independently measured differences in durability or finishing.
The article also identifies the SKX009J1 as the Japanese-origin J1 variant and contrasts it with the K1. That is the comparison author’s account; the sources cited here do not provide manufacturer confirmation for that point.

Which one should you choose?
- Pick the SKX009J1 if the blue-and-red bezel, uncomplicated design, and 7S26’s simpler operation are what you value most.
- Pick the SBDC001 if you want the reported hand-winding capability and 50-hour reserve of its 6R15, plus the larger, more sculpted case.
- Keep the reference exact when comparing specifications: later Sumo models have their own details, which should not be applied to the discontinued SBDC001.
Both references are discontinued, and the sources do not establish current prices, stock, listing authenticity, or availability. If you are considering a used example, assess the individual watch and seller rather than assuming an old listing or historical price reflects today’s market.
