Seiko introduced the Prospex SPB259 and Presage SSA445 in 2021 as limited editions celebrating the company’s 140th anniversary and its Ginza roots. Both dials draw on Ginza’s cobblestones, but the watches differ in size, crystal, movement, water resistance and edition quantity.

Why Seiko made the SPB259 and SSA445

In a press release dated September 7, 2021, Seiko Watch Corporation linked the anniversary watches to Ginza, the Tokyo district where the company’s story began. Seiko described the two models as inspired by the district’s cobblestones, with a layered printing effect intended to give the dial pattern depth. The SPB259 belongs to the Prospex 1959 Alpinist Modern Re-interpretation line; the SSA445 is a Presage Style60’s design informed by Seiko’s 1964 Crown Chronograph. Seiko’s announcement said the watches were planned for Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide in October 2021; that was the launch plan, not confirmation of present availability.

What the differences mean

SPB259: smaller case, longer reserve, higher water-resistance rating

At 38.0 mm across, the SPB259 has the smaller listed diameter; its 12.9 mm thickness is nearly the same as the SSA445’s. Its 6R35 movement has an approximately 70-hour published power reserve, compared with about 41 hours for the SSA445’s 4R39. Seiko lists the SPB259 at 20 bar and specifies a screw-down crown.

SSA445: larger case and open-aperture display

The SSA445’s diameter is 40.8 mm, while its listed thickness is 12.8 mm. Its Style60’s dial includes an open aperture and a 24-hour hand. Seiko lists its water resistance at 5 bar and equips it with box-shaped Hardlex rather than the SPB259’s curved sapphire crystal.

These are specification differences, not a hands-on comparison. Diameter alone cannot tell you how either watch will fit: wrist shape, lug span and strap or bracelet feel also matter, and the listed figures do not substitute for trying a watch on. Water-resistance ratings describe published specifications; they do not make either model a diver’s watch.
