How the 2024 concept became a watch for sale
Seiko’s Power Design Project gives in-house designers room to explore ideas beyond their regular work. Its 2024 exhibition opened January 19 at Seiko Seed in Harajuku, Tokyo, and presented seven “incredibly specialized watches.” The exhibition page said the displayed concepts were not for sale. Seiko’s 2026 announcement says the panda design drew the strongest support among the seven and was selected for production as a Collection 2 release.

How the panda face is built into the design
Designer Kiyotaka Sakai shaped the watch around the panda rather than applying a generic panda image to a chronograph. The dial’s radial stamping suggests fur, while the drooping-eye-shaped subdials form the eyes. The nose and mouth sit at six o’clock, and the hands take their shape from bamboo leaves.

The 43.0 mm diameter and 14.6 mm thickness are worth checking against a watch you already find comfortable, particularly if you prefer compact chronographs. Seiko’s phrase “everyday-life water resistance” should not be read as a specific meter rating: the announcement provides no numeric depth.

- Choose HHK002P if you prefer the pink dial and its newborn-panda inspiration. Seiko announced 2,000 pieces worldwide.
Both are limited editions, but the worldwide edition figures do not guarantee stock at a particular retailer or in a particular country. For a comparison with other chronographs, check case dimensions, movement and stopwatch functions, strap material, the stated water-resistance rating, and local price and availability rather than relying on the “panda” label alone.
