That is a specific industry-poll ranking—not a universal verdict—and the film’s comedy still works because its characters’ grand ideas about themselves keep colliding with the lives they actually lead.
What did the WGA recognize?
The Writers Guild of America’s entry names Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor as the screenwriters and identifies Rex Pickett’s novel as the source material. The Academy’s record for the 77th Academy Awards confirms that Payne and Taylor won Writing (Adapted Screenplay) for Sideways in 2005.
The Guild’s placement belongs to a list released in November 2015. The Writers Guild of America, East says members of WGA East and WGA West voted on it. Eligible films were English-language theatrical features with on-screen writing credits, and the list covers 86 years of comedy screenwriting. It is best read as recognition from a defined group of writers, rather than a measurement that settles what every audience finds funny. WGA East’s list introduction and methodology
The Academy record lists five nominations for Sideways at the 2005 ceremony, with the adapted-screenplay award as its one win. Its other nominations were Best Picture, Directing, Actor in a Supporting Role for Thomas Haden Church, and Actress in a Supporting Role for Virginia Madsen. Academy record for the 77th Awards

How does the screenplay make the road trip funny?
The film follows Miles, a frustrated novelist played by Giamatti, and Jack, his soon-to-be-married friend, on a trip through Santa Barbara wine country. The WGA calls Miles the straight man and Jack the clownish foil, a pairing that gives the comedy a clear engine: Jack acts on impulse while Miles tries to maintain a more measured, self-conscious pose.
That contrast is more than a setup for mishaps. The Guild points to the distance between the characters’ hopes and the way their lives have turned out. Miles wants to see himself as discerning and in control, but his disappointments keep surfacing; Jack’s easygoing confidence makes him entertaining, while his choices carry consequences. Their trip keeps putting those self-images under pressure.

The setting helps the screenplay turn that tension into situations rather than speeches. The WGA describes it as a road comedy whose roads wind through Santa Barbara wine country. Tasting rooms, meals and stops along the route give the friends room to perform versions of themselves—and then expose the gap between performance and reality. The WGA’s Sideways entry
Why can its comedy still land?
Sideways does not depend only on the surprise of a gag. Its humor grows from recognizable flaws: insecurity dressed up as sophistication, bravado used to dodge responsibility, and friendship that allows both affection and exasperation to coexist. Because the characters’ comic behavior comes from those flaws, a scene can be funny and uncomfortable at once.

The screenplay also gives its leads different comic jobs without reducing either one to a single joke. Miles’s restraint makes his frustration legible; Jack’s buoyancy makes the trouble he causes harder to ignore. The wine-country journey is therefore not just a backdrop or a sequence of comic stops: it keeps forcing the two men’s competing ideas of adulthood, taste and success into the same frame.

The WGA’s list makes a case for Sideways as a notable comedy screenplay, and the Academy award records a separate recognition for its adaptation. Neither establishes that every viewer will find it funny, or that the list’s position is an objective score. The more useful takeaway is what the Guild’s commentary identifies: a road-comedy structure, sharply contrasting friends, and humor drawn from the mismatch between aspiration and reality.
