The Slim d’Hermès time-only watch discussed in Monochrome’s “hands-on” review is a 2015 model, not a new 2026 launch. Frank Geelen’s article describes a 39.5 mm steel watch with small seconds and distinctive custom numerals. Hermès still lists a 39.5 mm steel Slim d’Hermès in its regional stores, but the current US and UK listings use different references and prices.
What watch did the 2015 review cover?
Frank Geelen published his Monochrome Watches review on 15 September 2015. It examines a 39.5 mm stainless-steel Slim d’Hermès with a time-only display and small seconds. The word “new” in the original headline refers to the watch at that point in its launch-era coverage; it should not be read as a current release announcement. Read Geelen’s 2015 review.
Geelen’s wrist impressions are his own: he wrote that the watch did not feel too large, and praised how it sat beneath a cuff. Those observations are not a reproduced fit test. Hermès’ current regional product pages show that the 39.5 mm steel time-only design remains listed, though the exact reference and strap configuration differ by market.
Design: the typography is the focal point
The dial pairs an opaline silvered surface with a sunburst chapter ring and a snailed small-seconds counter. The dial center is also snailed, according to Hermès’ current US specification. Geelen singled out the custom numerals and balanced layout as central to the watch’s character. Rather than treating the dial as a neutral backdrop, the typography gives the otherwise restrained face a distinctive graphic identity.

Hermès connects the Slim design to the house’s graphic culture and confirms that Parisian graphic designer Philippe Apeloig designed the line’s font. Geelen’s review likewise discusses the custom typography. The watch’s visual appeal therefore rests on a clear contrast: a simple, clean case framing a more expressive dial. The assessment of the case, dial balance and strap as attractive is Geelen’s editorial judgment, not a new physical inspection.
Movement and specifications
Hermès currently identifies the movement in its US listing as the H1950, a mechanical self-winding calibre with a 42-hour power reserve. The product page lists sapphire crystal and a sapphire case-back, along with a 3-bar water-resistance rating. Hermès also warns: “Avoid all contact with water while wearing your Hermès leather watch.” That practical caution matters more than the rating alone if you wear the supplied leather strap.

Geelen’s 2015 article gives additional historical movement details: it describes a 2.6 mm-high micro-rotor movement, says development took four years, identifies Vaucher Manufacture as designer and manufacturer, and notes hand-chamfered edges and an H motif on the bridges. These are details reported in that launch-era review; they are not independently confirmed by the current product listings cited here.
Although “Slim” is in the name, a case-thickness figure is not provided by the cited Hermès US or UK product pages. The 2.6 mm figure in Geelen’s review refers to the movement’s height, not the thickness of the complete watch. It should not be used as a case-thickness measurement.

The US page specifies a steel bracelet-free watch with reference W041759WW00; the UK page lists reference W052839WW00 with a black Barenia calfskin strap.

What to take from the review
Geelen’s 2015 review presents the Slim d’Hermès as a compact-looking, restrained steel watch whose custom numerals lend the dial its personality. Its small-seconds layout keeps the display focused on time, while the H1950 and 42-hour reserve are the current official movement and reserve specifications for the listed steel version. For a present-day buyer, the useful checks are the local reference, strap, price and water-use guidance—not the launch-era “new” label.
