Choose a GPS-only smartwatch if your phone is usually with you; choose GPS + Cellular if you want to call or message from the watch when your phone is elsewhere. In either case, GPS can track workouts independently. Cellular hardware does not include cellular service, so check that your specific watch and account are eligible and include the recurring plan charge in your budget.
Cellular vs. non-cellular: what changes?
For Apple Watch, the comparable configurations are called GPS and GPS + Cellular. A GPS-only model can use its built-in GPS to record workout distance, pace, and route mapping. GPS describes location tracking; it does not mean the watch has its own cellular connection.
For calls, messages, and notifications on a GPS model, Apple says the iPhone needs to be nearby and connected through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. A GPS + Cellular model can make calls and send texts without the iPhone nearby when it has an active service plan.

Which configuration fits how you use a watch?
Choose GPS-only if your phone is usually nearby
If you carry your phone on runs, errands, and commutes, the GPS model covers the workout-location functions described above without requiring a watch cellular plan. It is the straightforward choice when you mainly want a watch companion to your phone rather than phone-free connectivity.

Choose GPS + Cellular if you want phone-free calling or messaging
Cellular is most useful when you deliberately leave your phone behind but still want to make calls or send texts from the watch. The capability depends on having an eligible active plan; buying the cellular-capable hardware alone does not provide service.

Apple Watch
Apple’s US carrier and cellular-model page lists supported carriers and compatible models. Apple advises checking with the carrier whether your iPhone plan qualifies; some prepaid and older accounts may not be supported. Cellular models are optimized for the country of purchase, and Apple says there is no single Apple Watch model that supports cellular service worldwide.
Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE
Samsung’s LTE activation instructions name AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon and say the watch plan must match the phone’s carrier. Samsung’s model guide cautions that standalone voice calling may depend on the carrier and area. Before buying, confirm support for the exact watch model, phone, account, and standalone functions you want.
What does smartwatch cellular service cost?
Cellular service adds a recurring charge, and the actual price depends on the carrier, plan, account eligibility, taxes, and fees. These are published US examples, not a universal smartwatch rate:

Make the choice based on the phone-free moments you need
Workout GPS alone is not a reason to pay for cellular: the Apple GPS model can record location-based workout information independently. The deciding question is whether you want calls or texts from the watch when your phone is not nearby. If yes, verify the model and service first; if not, GPS-only is likely sufficient for the uses described here.
This guide focuses on US carrier and account considerations. Apple labels the configurations GPS and GPS + Cellular in its Apple Watch Series 12 shopping options.
