Existing base-PS5 owners do not need a PS5 Pro to use QSSR in those supported games. Sony says it improves image detail and stability, but has not published resolution targets, frame-rate results, or comparative measurements.
What QSSR is on PS5
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony calls it “a new performance tier of AI upscaling” designed for PS5. In broad terms, AI upscaling uses a game’s rendered image as input and reconstructs a higher-detail image; Sony says its existing PSSR technology analyzes images pixel by pixel.
Sony says PSSR’s computational demands had previously kept that experience off the standard PS5. QSSR is presented as an adaptation for the base console’s performance constraints, developed from Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony identifies a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5 as its design choices.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two launch titles, each receiving a patch on October 1, 2026. In both, QSSR is an additional graphics option rather than a feature Sony says is enabled universally across all PS5 games.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Game | QSSR availability | How it is offered |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine | Sony says it was patched October 1, 2026. | Optional graphics setting on PS5. |
| Ghost of Yōtei | Sony says it was patched October 1, 2026. | Optional graphics setting on PS5. |
Sony says it plans to offer the QSSR library broadly to PlayStation developers, but its October 1 announcement names no other games and gives no rollout calendar. Support in additional titles should therefore be treated as unconfirmed unless their developers or Sony announce it.
What difference should players expect?
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability. Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald described added “pixel-level clarity and stability” in the environments of Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry said QSSR resolves fine details in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5.

Those are qualitative descriptions, not measured comparisons. Sony’s announcement provides no percentage improvement, output-resolution figure, frame-rate change, latency result, or side-by-side test. It also does not say whether choosing QSSR changes another graphics setting or performance trade-off in either game. The actual effect may depend on each game’s implementation, so players should use the in-game graphics options rather than assume a particular resolution or frame rate.
QSSR on base PS5 versus PSSR on PS5 Pro
Sony positions PSSR as the gold standard on PS5 Pro and QSSR as an AI-upscaling tier adapted to the base PS5. It does not provide side-by-side results or claim that the two produce equivalent image quality. The announcement supports the conclusion that base PS5 can use QSSR in supported games—not a ranking of QSSR against PSSR.

Do you need a PS5 Pro or system upgrade?
No new PS5 Pro, replacement base console, TV, monitor, or cable is identified as necessary for existing base-PS5 owners to use QSSR in the named games. Sony says the games received patches adding the option. Its announcement does not clarify whether a separate system software update is required, which hardware revisions are covered, or whether availability differs by region.
To try it, install the relevant game patch and look in that game’s graphics options for QSSR. Sony has not published one universal menu path, so the exact label and location may differ between titles.
