STP was a Swiss movement maker owned by Fossil Group, and its STP 1-11 automatic movement was built as an alternative in the same family as the ETA 2824 and Sellita SW200. The Swiss Competition Commission’s 2016 decision places the company in Manno, Switzerland, dates its founding to 2006, and records first deliveries in 2008. Its 2015 production estimates also show how small STP was next to ETA. This article explains what is documented, what is only the manufacturer’s or brand’s claim, and what remains unknown. It is not a factory report: the sources establish the company’s history and product claims, not the current state of its Manno site.
Who STP was and how it relates to Fossil Group
Swiss Technology Production SA, known as STP, is identified in the Competition Commission’s 2016 decision as a Fossil Group company based in Manno, Switzerland. The Commission says it was founded in 2006. That is the only regulatory account in the sources reviewed that gives the company’s legal identity and location, so any statement about its present status should be checked against current corporate filings.
The useful way to understand STP is as a supplier of finished automatic movements to a watch group that was not dependent on ETA. Fossil’s interest was in a movement it could develop and control, not in reproducing ETA’s manufacturing network. The phrase “Fossil Group’s answer to ETA” is an editorial framing, not a corporate slogan, and it should be read that way.
Timeline of STP and its movements
| Year | Event | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| 1793 | ETA traces its first ébauche workshop and business to Fontainemelon, opened by four master watchmakers. | ETA SA, company history |
| 1985 | Ebauches SA’s multiple ébauche factories become a single undertaking under the ETA SA brand. | ETA SA, company history |
| 2006 | STP is founded, and development of the base STP1-11 movement begins. | Swiss Competition Commission, 2016 decision |
| 2008 | First STP1-11 movements are delivered. | Swiss Competition Commission, 2016 decision |
| 2012 | The Sea Wolf evolves with the STP 1-11, which Zodiac describes as having a 44-hour power reserve. | Zodiac Watches, brand history (undated page) |
| 2015 | Estimated production shares: ETA 70–80%, STP 0–5% of Swiss-made mechanical movements, by volume. | Swiss Competition Commission, 2016 decision |
| 2017 | Zodiac begins switching from the STP 1-11 to the STP 3-13. | Zodiac Watches, brand history (undated page) |
The 2012 date in Zodiac’s history is the point at which the brand introduced the movement into its own line. The Commission’s 2006 date is the start of development. The two dates describe different events, and neither should be used to date the other.

What the STP 1-11 is
Construction and specifications as the brand describes them
Zodiac’s legacy page describes the STP 1-11 in terms that can be attributed to the brand:
- A three-hand automatic movement.
- A 44-hour power reserve.
- More than 100 components.
- Components constructed and tested by hand on a custom-created assembly line, with each movement undergoing quality tests.
These are Zodiac’s statements about its own supplier’s movement. They are not the result of an independent factory audit, and the sources reviewed do not describe the production steps in enough detail to verify them.

The interchangeability claim
The Commission records STP’s claim that the STP1-11 was interchangeable with the ETA 2824 and Sellita SW200. That is a manufacturer’s claim, and it is a claim about movements, not about individual watches. Whether a particular replacement works depends on the specific version and the watch it goes into. Check these before assuming a fit:
- Movement diameter and height.
- Dial and hand setup, including whether the hands and day or date wheel match.
- Stem position and winding stem length.
- The exact caliber variant, not just the family name.
How Formex compares the designs
A brand-authored comparison published by Formex describes the STP 1-11 as based on the ETA 2824-2 design. It gives a 26-jewel count for STP and Sellita movements against 25 for the ETA 2824-2, and discusses component sourcing and Swiss-made criteria. Because Formex is a brand-authored secondary source, its claims should be attributed to Formex and not treated as independent verification.

How large was STP compared with ETA?
The Competition Commission’s 2015 estimates are the only comparable market-share figures in the sources reviewed. They are volume-based ranges, not exact shares, and they describe 2015.
| Producer | Estimated share of Swiss-made mechanical movement production, 2015 | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| ETA | 70–80% | Commission estimate, volume-based |
| STP | 0–5% | Commission estimate, volume-based |
The gap is large. It means STP was a minor supplier by volume in 2015, and it should not be read as a measure of STP’s product quality or its importance to Fossil’s brands.

ETA’s institutional history
ETA traces its origin to Fontainemelon in 1793 and says the multiple ébauche factories grouped under Ebauches SA became a single undertaking under the ETA SA brand in 1985. Its own enterprise page describes a production and assembly network spanning the Jura foothills and the Swiss cantons of Valais and Ticino. ETA describes itself as part of the Swatch Group and says it develops quartz, mechanical and Swatch movements.
That history explains why ETA is the reference point for the industry. It does not, by itself, say anything about STP’s operations, which were smaller and separately organized.

Where the STP 1-11 appears in Zodiac’s line
Zodiac’s brand history says the Sea Wolf evolved with the STP 1-11 and that the brand switched to the STP 3-13 in 2017. The Zodiac page does not give a publication date. The switch is the clearest evidence that the STP 1-11 was a model-specific choice within one brand’s range, not a standard that every STP-equipped watch carried. Other brands and models may have used STP movements, but the sources reviewed do not document them.
Is STP a real alternative to ETA?
The answer depends on what “alternative” means. As a supplier of automatic movements designed to be compatible with ETA 2824 and Sellita SW200, STP made a claim that it could fill a similar role. As a company, it was much smaller than ETA by volume in 2015, and the sources do not show it had the same product breadth or output. The table below separates what is documented from what is not.
| Axis | ETA 2824 | STP 1-11 |
|---|---|---|
| Company | ETA SA, part of the Swatch Group (ETA’s own description) | Swiss Technology Production SA, a Fossil Group company in Manno (Commission, 2016) |
| Development and first delivery | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Development from 2006; first deliveries in 2008 (Commission, 2016) |
| Jewel count | 25 for the ETA 2824-2 (Formex, brand-authored) | 26 (Formex, brand-authored) |
| Power reserve | Not stated in the sources reviewed | 44 hours (Zodiac, brand history) |
| Interchangeability | Reference design | Claimed by STP to be interchangeable with ETA 2824 and Sellita SW200 (Commission, 2016) |
| Current parts and service policy | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
No single movement can be declared better on these axes. A fair comparison needs the exact caliber and version, the watch it is installed in, the manufacturer’s accuracy specification, service documentation, warranty terms and actual parts availability. The sources reviewed do not supply current versions of these details for all three movements.
What this article cannot establish
- Whether the Manno factory is operating today, or whether it is open to visitors.
- Current ownership or legal status of STP.
- Current output, staffing, automation level or inspection procedure.
- Current parts supply or service coverage for the STP 1-11 or STP 3-13.
- Whether any particular watch will accept an STP movement without modification.
Any account of a visit to the factory would require firsthand notes or photographs from the visit itself. The sources cited here do not provide that, so nothing in this article should be read as a description of a tour.

Identifying a watch with an STP 1-11 movement
- Check the watch’s model documentation for the movement name. Zodiac’s Sea Wolf references are the documented case; a plain caliber name without a version is not enough.
- Look for the exact caliber designation, not only the family name ETA 2824 or Sellita SW200.
- If you intend to service or replace the movement, have a qualified watchmaker confirm dimensions, dial and hand fit, and stem position before ordering.
- Ask the seller or manufacturer for current parts and service information in writing. Do not assume it is available.
This is the approach the sources support. The STP 1-11 is well documented as a historical movement, but its present-day availability is not.
