The TAG Heuer Monaco “Dark Lord” is the 2022 Monaco Special Edition, reference CBL2180.FC6497: a 39 mm black DLC-coated titanium chronograph with rose-gold accents and an automatic movement. Its design nods to a rare all-black Monaco from the late 1970s, but it is a modern interpretation, not a vintage reissue. TAG Heuer’s current U.S. page lists it at $9,550; Monochrome reported a launch price of CHF 8,000 in May 2022.
What is the TAG Heuer Monaco Dark Lord?
“Dark Lord” is the nickname commonly used for the black Monaco, rather than the formal name TAG Heuer gives this watch. The current product listing calls reference CBL2180.FC6497 the TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Automatic; TAG Heuer’s 2022 materials call it the Monaco Special Edition. It is the black DLC-coated titanium Monaco and takes its design cues from an all-black Monaco look of the late 1970s. TAG Heuer’s current product page identifies its reference and specifications.

The historical connection is visual, not a claim of exact reproduction. TAG Heuer’s magazine describes the earlier watch’s matte black case and dial with orange and white accents; the modern edition substitutes rose-gold details and contemporary materials and movement technology. TAG Heuer says this was the first Monaco chronograph to use black-coated titanium. The black treatment extends to the case, crown, pushers and caseback. TAG Heuer’s 2022 design account explains the inspiration and coating.
Case, dial and strap
Black-coated titanium case
The case is 39 mm across and made from Grade 2 titanium with a black diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating, according to TAG Heuer’s May 2022 brochure. TAG Heuer’s current U.S. listing gives a thickness of 13.8 mm, a 22 mm lug distance, a fixed bezel and 100 m water resistance. Monochrome’s May 2022 launch report instead described the case height as approximately 15 mm. Those are source-specific figures from different dates; the available information does not establish why they differ.
Contrasting black and rose-gold details
The dial pairs a circular-brushed centre with a grained black outer area. Rose-gold-plated hands and indexes contrast with the dark surfaces; TAG Heuer specifies 18K 5N rose-gold plating and white Super-LumiNova on the hands. Monochrome’s launch report also noted red chronograph hands. The display caseback shows the movement and its rose-gold-plated oscillating weight. TAG Heuer’s brochure documents the materials and dial treatment.
Alligator strap and clasp
The watch comes on a black alligator strap with tone-on-tone stitching and a black DLC-coated titanium folding clasp with double safety pushers. TAG Heuer lists the lug distance as 22 mm, but that measurement alone does not verify the fit or quality of any particular replacement strap.

Movement and practical specifications
TAG Heuer’s current product page names the automatic, in-house movement the TH20-00. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and has an 80-hour power reserve. Its stated functions are hours, minutes, seconds, date and chronograph, with a 1/4-second indication, a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour counter. The watch is rated to 100 m water resistance.
The 2022 launch coverage used the name Heuer 02. TAG Heuer now describes TH20-00 as an evolution of Heuer 02, so the difference in names reflects the naming used at different points, not evidence that the watch was launched with an unrelated movement. TAG Heuer’s current listing provides the movement specification and its explanation of the evolution.

How does the Dark Lord wear?
In his 27 May 2022 hands-on report, Monochrome’s Brice Goulard said the square 39 mm case had a notable presence. He found the titanium edition noticeably lighter and more comfortable than the steel Monaco models in his comparison, while describing the Monaco as top-heavy. He also observed that the matte black case visually reduced the watch’s apparent dimensions. These are Goulard’s reported impressions, not measurements or a new hands-on assessment.
