Its signature flyback chronograph resets and restarts with one pusher action. Later chapters include the Type XXI technical programme and the 10 Hz Type XXII, followed by modern Type 20 2057, Type XX 2067 and anniversary Type XX 2075 models.
Why Breguet uses both Type 20 and Type XX
The names refer to two related but distinct strands, not merely alternative ways of writing the same designation. Breguet identifies its military models as Type 20 and its civilian watches as Type XX. The modern collection continues that distinction: Type 20 carries military inspiration, while Type XX represents the civilian line. The different numerals are useful historical cues, though they do not by themselves identify every detail of a vintage watch.
Breguet’s account says the French Ministry of Defense drew up requirements in the early 1950s for a large quantity of chronograph wristwatches for the Air Force, to be called Type 20. The company says its design was approved in 1954, with principal deliveries to the French Air Force from 1955 to 1959. Breguet also reports deliveries to the Flight Test Center in 1956–1957 and the Naval Air Force in 1960. It subsequently offered a civilian Type XX. These dates describe Breguet’s published account of its role in the programme, not a complete inventory of every maker or watch supplied under the military designation. Breguet: “Mass production of the Type XX chronograph begins”
“The Type XX was introduced as a pilot watch equipped with a flyback chronograph, the emblematic function of this watch.” — Montres Breguet

What flyback means on a Type XX
A conventional chronograph generally requires separate actions to stop, reset and start a new timing interval. With flyback, pressing the lower pusher while the chronograph is running resets the hands to zero and immediately starts timing again. That makes it practical to time consecutive events without stopping the watch and restarting it through multiple operations.
Breguet describes flyback as a feature on Type XX chronographs since 1954 and says all Type XX chronographs made after that year have the function. That is the manufacturer’s broad historical statement; individual vintage watches should be assessed by their reference and condition rather than assumed to share every later feature. Breguet’s Type XX history and its new-generation overview describe the function.

Type XXI: a formal technical programme, not one universal watch specification
The Type XXI story includes a later formal programme. In his historical account, Breguet historian Emmanuel Breguet says the Aeronautical Technical Service published a nine-page Type 21 technical-programme booklet in April 1956. He reports that its requirements included:
- An approximately 37 mm case, a 35-hour power reserve, and a rotating bezel with a luminous marker.
- Legible luminous markings, small seconds and a 30-minute counter.
- Daily rate variation no greater than 15 seconds.
- Operation under acceleration of at least 5g and in a 12-gauss magnetic field.
These are requirements reported from the 1956 programme, not test results for every Type XXI watch or a guarantee that every production reference met an identical specification. The Type XXI should therefore be understood in its programme context, alongside a family whose successive generations and variants do not share one uniform specification. Type XXII: what the 10 Hz movement changes
Breguet dates the Type XXII reference 3880 ST to 2010 and describes it as a 10 Hz chronograph: 72,000 vibrations per hour. The company says silicon in the balance spring, lever and escape wheel helped reduce component weight and lubrication constraints as part of its high-frequency research. It also says the chronograph seconds hand completes a revolution in 30 seconds and the display can indicate twentieths of a second. Breguet’s account of its 10 Hz introduction
The frequency and the displayed interval are related but not identical ideas: 10 Hz describes the movement’s oscillation rate, while twentieths of a second describe the chronograph display resolution Breguet attributes to this watch. A higher beat rate alone does not establish better real-world timekeeping accuracy.

How the 2023 Type 20 2057 and Type XX 2067 differ
Breguet’s 2023-generation page lists a military-inspired Type 20 reference 2057 and a civilian Type XX reference 2067. The documented steel versions share a 42 mm case, 14.1 mm thickness, automatic winding, flyback chronograph, date, 5 Hz frequency and 60-hour power reserve. Their counter layouts, movements and design cues differ:
| Model | Identity and movement | Chronograph counters |
|---|---|---|
| Type 20 2057 | Military-inspired; calibre 7281 | 30-minute totalizer at 3 o’clock; 60-second totalizer at 9 o’clock |
| Type XX 2067 | Civilian; calibre 728 | 15-minute totalizer at 3 o’clock; 12-hour totalizer at 6 o’clock; running seconds at 9 o’clock |
The distinctions are functional as well as visual: the two layouts present elapsed time differently, and Breguet pairs each model with its own calibre. The manufacturer’s page is the reference for the listed steel-model specifications; confirm the precise reference and current regional configuration when comparing a particular watch. The differing historical cues and displays do not produce a universal “better” choice. Breguet Type XX new-generation models

Type XX 2075: a civilian anniversary interpretation
Breguet says Type XX reference 2075 commemorates the company’s 250th anniversary and takes inspiration from a civilian gold model presented in 1955. Its release describes two variations of calibre 728, the 5 Hz movement introduced in 2023: one has an aluminium black dial, while the other has a solid silver dial and is limited to 250 pieces. The limitation applies to that silver-dial version, not to both versions as a group. Edition status and exact reference suffixes should be checked against Breguet’s current listing. What to check when comparing a vintage or modern Type XX
- Designation and context: distinguish military Type 20 from civilian Type XX, and verify the exact reference rather than relying on the name alone.
- Chronograph function: establish whether the specific watch has flyback and inspect its operating condition; the feature’s importance does not establish the health of a particular example.
- Counter layout and calibre: layouts changed across generations. On the modern 2057 and 2067, the totalizers and movement differ as shown above.
- Condition and provenance: the historical overview is not an authentication guide, and it does not establish the originality or service history of any individual vintage watch.
- Current edition details: specifications and availability can vary by reference or region; consult the manufacturer’s live product information for the exact watch being considered.
Breguet’s collection overview presents the distinction between military Type 20 and civilian Type XX, while its historical account traces the early programme and later variants. Breguet Type XX collection
