#TBT: IWC GST Aquatimer 3536 — The 2,000-Metre Diver

The IWC GST Aquatimer 3536 was specified for 200 bar, or 2,000 metres. Here’s what the records establish about its variants, history, and vintage water resistance.

The IWC GST Aquatimer reference 3536 is a high-pressure-rated dive watch from IWC’s GST sports-watch era. Its operating instructions specify resistance to 200 bar, equivalent to 2,000 metres. That is the model’s original specification—not a guarantee that any decades-old example remains water-resistant today.

What is the IWC GST Aquatimer 3536?

The 3536 is a GST-era Aquatimer, a substantial mechanical dive watch whose best-known specification is its 200-bar rating. IWC’s model-specific operating instructions identify it as “GST AQUATIMER REF. 3536” and state: “Your GST Aquatimer is shockproof, antimagnetic, water-resistant to a pressure 200 bar, equivalent to a water depth of 2000 metres, and is protected by a 3.7 mm thick, scratch-resistant sapphire glass (hardness grade 9).” The wording and figures describe the watch as specified by IWC, not the present condition of a particular used watch.

A documented titanium example gives a sense of the reference’s configuration. Antiquorum’s 2009 catalog describes a circa-2000 ref. 3536 with automatic caliber 37524, 21 jewels, a date display, a unidirectional rotating bezel, and a 42 mm case. Those details belong to that cataloged watch; they should not automatically be applied to every variant.

Which 3536 variants are documented?

Available specialist and auction records establish several material and dial combinations, but they are not a complete factory variant register.

Steel, white dial Amsterdam Watch Company describes this as another further 3536 variant.
Titanium auction example Antiquorum’s 2009 catalog records a circa-2000 watch with caliber 37524, 21 jewels, date, unidirectional rotating bezel, 42 mm diameter, and 2,000 m water resistance.

The dealer’s archived listing and the auction catalog are useful records of specific watches, not proof that these are the only factory configurations. When evaluating an example, check the exact reference and variant rather than relying on a broad label such as “3536.”

How does the 3536 fit IWC’s dive-watch history?

From the first Aquatimer to the Ocean 2000

IWC says it unveiled its first Aquatimer, reference IW812 AD, at the Basel Watch Show in 1967. The company describes that model as water-resistant to 200 metres, with an internal rotating bezel operated by a second crown. The 3536 belongs to a much later point in that lineage.

Casio MDV-106B Series | Duro Diver-Style Watch | 200M Water Resistant | Stainless Steel Case | Unidirectional Bezel | Screw-Lock Crown | Date Display
  • DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106B is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
  • STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106B features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
  • LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
  • 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
  • 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.

IWC’s historical material also connects its deep-diving story to the Ocean 2000, designed for the company by Ferdinand A. Porsche in 1982. IWC describes the Ocean 2000 as pressure-resistant to 200 bar. That shared pressure figure places the watches in a related strand of IWC’s dive-watch history, but it does not establish that the 3536 is identical to, or a direct technical continuation of, the Ocean 2000.

The GST period and the approximate 3536 introduction

IWC’s 2017 catalog places the GST line in 1997. Amsterdam Watch Company says the Aquatimer 3536 was introduced roughly around that time. The evidence supports describing the reference as a late-1990s GST-era watch; it does not establish an exact manufacturer-confirmed launch date.

What is known about discontinuation?

A 2011 discussion on the IWC Collectors Forum addressed the question “When was 3536 Ti discontinued?” In a reply, contributor Michael Friedberg said the reference last appeared in the 2003 catalog. He also noted that the transition from tritium to Luminova was gradual and generally occurred in 2002–03, with catalog images and production batches complicating simple year-by-year conclusions. This is a forum contributor’s catalog-based account, not a definitive factory production record. The available records therefore do not support a precise production start-and-end range or using lume alone to assign an individual watch to a specific year.

Does “2,000 metres” mean a vintage 3536 is safe to dive with?

No. The 2,000-metre figure is the model’s original manufacturer rating; it says nothing by itself about the condition of an individual watch now. Seals age, parts can be damaged or replaced, and a watch may have been opened or serviced since it left the factory. A vintage example should not be treated as dive-ready solely because the dial, caseback, or documentation carries a deep-water specification.

IWC’s operating instructions include water-resistance checking guidance. Follow the manual’s maintenance advice and have the watch’s water resistance verified by a qualified watchmaker or service provider before any water use. A successful check is relevant to the watch’s condition at the time of testing; it does not turn the historical rating into a permanent guarantee.

How to assess a 3536 example

For a collector comparing watches, the most useful evidence is specific to the individual example rather than the reference’s headline depth rating.

  • Reference and configuration: Confirm the stated reference and whether the watch is titanium or steel, along with its dial variant. Dealer descriptions establish several combinations but do not amount to a complete factory list.
  • Provenance and documentation: Look for service records and a clear account of the watch’s history. The sources cited here do not establish current prices, inventory, or the condition of any watch for sale.
  • Movement and parts: Compare the watch with documentation for its particular configuration. Antiquorum’s caliber 37524, 21-jewel specification applies to its cataloged titanium example, not automatically to every 3536.
  • Water-resistance verification: Ask for a recent, documented check before considering water use. The original 200-bar specification is not a substitute for testing a decades-old watch.

A later Aquatimer comparison—not a 3536 feature

In 2017 IWC introduced the Aquatimer Automatic 2000 Edition “35 Years Ocean 2000,” reference IW329101, as a limited edition of 350 watches rated for dives to 2,000 metres. IWC said its SafeDive system allows the bezel to turn only anticlockwise. That description concerns the later IW329101; it is not evidence that the 3536 uses the same SafeDive mechanism.
