The Rolex Explorer 1016 is best understood as the long-running vintage Explorer that kept the 36 mm, black 3-6-9 design and acrylic crystal until the 14270 replaced it in 1989. Its production is generally dated from around 1960–63 through 1989; the starting year is disputed in collector histories, while the endpoint is consistent. “Last of the breed” means the last acrylic-crystal Explorer reference before that modernization—not the last Explorer or the last tool watch.
How the 1016 fits into Explorer history
Rolex dates the Explorer’s launch to 1953, in the wake of the Everest expedition on which Hillary and Norgay reached the summit on 29 May. Rolex’s account says the expedition was equipped with Oyster Perpetual chronometers and presents the Explorer’s black dial, large 3, 6 and 9 numerals, baton markers and 12 o’clock triangle as features intended to make the time easy to read. That is the brand’s account of the model’s origins; it does not establish that a surviving 1016 was used on Everest. Rolex’s Explorer history gives the summit’s elevation as 8,848 metres (29,029 feet).
Rolex’s history also reproduces a testimonial attributed to climber Achille Compagnoni after the 1954 Italian K2 expedition: “Your Rolex watch was with me during the whole expedition and worked perfectly, even above the 8,000-metre mark.” Compagnoni was among the climbers who reached K2’s 8,611-metre (28,251-foot) summit. This is a historical testimonial quoted by Rolex, not a measured performance test of the 1016.
What years was the Rolex Explorer 1016 made?
The commonly cited span is around 1960–63 through 1989. Rolexopedia describes a range of approximately 1960–1989, associating the earlier date with case-serial evidence and 1963 with the reference’s appearance as the current-production Explorer in another history. Monochrome dates the reference to 1963–1989. The earliest boundary is therefore a matter of documentary and collector-history interpretation, not a settled factory production ledger; treat claims for the very earliest examples cautiously.

The 1989 endpoint is the clearer part of the timeline: the 14270 took over that year. Serial estimates and collector dial labels can help place a watch in context, but neither alone proves a particular watch’s original configuration or exact production date.
What defines a 1016?
The 1016 pairs a 36 mm case and time-only display with the Explorer’s black 3-6-9 dial, an acrylic crystal and a stated 100 m water-resistance rating. Its restrained layout is part of the appeal: the dial gives the hours visual priority without a date window or extra complications.

| Feature | Explorer 1016 | Explorer 14270 |
|---|---|---|
| Period | Around 1960–63 to 1989; start date varies by collector history | Introduced as the 1016’s successor in 1989 |

| Movement | Calibre 1560 in early examples; calibre 1570 later in the run | Calibre 3000 |
| Case and dial | 36 mm; black 3-6-9 Explorer design | Modernized continuation of the Explorer design |
The comparison captures the central shift, not every construction detail or variation. For current Explorer sizes and specifications, consult Rolex’s current Explorer collection: today’s 36 mm and 40 mm models are not 1016s. Rolex says the current 36 mm size matches the original model’s diameter, which is a size comparison rather than a claim of identical materials or construction.
What is the difference between gilt and matte 1016 dials?
Gilt dials belong to the earlier glossy look; later examples use matte black dials with white printing. Across the production span, collectors also note changes in dial text, lume and printing. Those shifts do not make a dial name a reliable stand-alone dating tool: collector “Type” and “Mark” labels are not Rolex factory designations, transitions overlap, and a dial may have been replaced during service.

Assess a specific watch as a whole: its serial evidence, dial and hands, condition, service record and any replaced parts all matter. A shorthand dial label should describe what is present, not serve as proof that the watch is untouched or dates to one exact year.
Did the Rolex 1016 use a 1560 or 1570 movement?
Both. Early 1016 examples used calibre 1560, with calibre 1570 appearing later. The 1570 has a higher beat rate and, in later versions, hacking seconds—the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled to set the time. Collector sources do not establish one clean, universally applicable calendar-year boundary for the change, so inspect the movement and documentation of the individual watch rather than assuming its calibre from a broad year estimate.

What replaced the Rolex Explorer 1016?
The Explorer 14270 succeeded the 1016 in 1989, bringing a sapphire crystal and calibre 3000 as part of a modernization of the formula. The Explorer kept its recognizable 3-6-9 identity, but the 1016 is the reference associated with the earlier acrylic-crystal construction and the long-running 36 mm vintage format.
What should I check before buying a vintage Rolex 1016?
There is no verified current price range or inventory snapshot established here, so compare current examples directly rather than relying on a generic “going rate.” A careful purchase decision starts with evidence about the particular watch and the terms of the sale.

Bob’s Watches describes examining incoming watches for authenticity and condition and preparing them for resale; that is the dealer’s stated process, not a guarantee about every seller or every example. Bob’s Watches’ 1016 page provides its account.
- Originality and service parts: Ask whether the dial, hands, bezel, bracelet and movement are believed to be original, and which parts have been replaced. Request clear photographs and disclose any uncertainty rather than treating collector Type or Mark labels as factory proof.
- Service history and paperwork: Seek dated service records and documentation that can be tied to the watch. Confirm what is included in the sale and whether the records support the seller’s claims.
- Return terms and comparables: Read the return policy before paying, then compare condition, originality, service work and included accessories when evaluating asking prices.
- Bracelet or strap fit: The reference is cited with a 20 mm lug width. Check the individual watch’s lug and spring-bar fit before ordering a 20 mm strap; it is an optional accessory, not evidence of original Rolex equipment. Collectors who prioritize originality may prefer an original bracelet.
Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program is a separate manufacturer program for qualifying used watches sold by participating Official Retailers, with Rolex certification and service. It does not establish that every vintage 1016 is currently available through the program. Rolex explains its Certified Pre-Owned program here.
Can a vintage 1016 still go in the water?
Not on the strength of its original 100 m rating alone. A decades-old watch’s present water resistance depends on its individual condition and seals, and the original rating is not proof that it remains waterproof. Rolex says technical checks are needed to verify waterproofness and recommends periodic service through its Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center network. Have a qualified service provider assess the watch before exposing it to water; do not swim with it based only on the vintage specification. Rolex’s watch-care guidance explains its service and technical-check recommendations.
