An in-house movement is a watch calibre a brand presents as its own, but the label has no single accepted technical definition. It does not prove that every part was made in the brand’s factory or that the watch is more accurate, durable, or valuable. To decide whether it matters, look at what the brand actually designed and made, the calibre’s performance, and how it can be serviced.
What is an in-house movement?
A movement, also called a calibre, is the mechanism that keeps time and powers a watch’s functions. “In-house” is an industry and marketing phrase, not a protected designation with a uniform audit. One brand may use it for a movement it designed and manufactures extensively; another may apply it to a calibre developed with partners or assembled in its own workshop using externally sourced components.
Movement production includes distinct jobs: designing the architecture, making components, sourcing specialist parts, modifying a base calibre, finishing, assembling, regulating, testing, and servicing. A brand can control some of these without doing every step itself. For example, hairsprings, jewels, or balance springs may come from specialist suppliers. That is ordinary industrial practice, not proof of poor quality. A description of the actual process is more useful than a claim about the percentage of parts made in-house, which can vary depending on whether one counts parts, value, labour, or production operations.
Terms that sound similar
- Manufacture or proprietary: Often used for a brand’s own movement, but neither term alone establishes where every component was made or which production steps were internal.
- In-group: May mean that a movement comes from a company within the same corporate group, rather than from the watch brand’s own factory.
- Exclusive supplier movement: A movement can be designed by an outside specialist for one brand and unique to that brand without being produced inside its factory.
- Modified base movement: Changes can range from cosmetic finishing to substantial functional or structural redesign. Ask what the base calibre is and what changed.
What does “in-house” mean in practice?
Brands’ own descriptions illustrate why the label needs context. A. Lange & Söhne defines its proprietary manufacture movement as one “developed by our calibre engineers, crafted in our manufacture – as well as finished and assembled twice by our watchmakers.” That is the company’s definition of its process, not an industry-wide standard. The brand also reports that it has introduced more than 70 calibres since its re-establishment in 1990; this is a company-reported figure on its undated current brand page, accessed in 2026.

CHANEL’s FAQ offers a different example: it says the watches are assembled in its La Chaux-de-Fonds workshops, while movements may be developed and produced by specialist Swiss companies. It also describes movements developed with partners and identifies Caliber 1, introduced in 2016, as the House’s first in-house movement. These arrangements show that a brand’s movement sourcing can vary within the same collection or company.
For a specific watch, go beyond the label: ask who designed the calibre, which systems or parts the brand makes or sources, and where assembly, regulation, and testing take place. The brand’s official explanation is evidence of what that brand says it does, not a universal definition for the industry.

Is an in-house movement better?
Not automatically. “In-house” is not a quality grade or a performance certification. Origin alone does not establish accuracy, durability, finishing quality, or value, and no general comparative result can replace evidence about the exact calibre. A well-executed supplier movement may be reliable and practical to own; a proprietary calibre may offer distinctive engineering or design. Compare the watch itself rather than assuming one supply model is superior.
- Performance and function: Check the stated accuracy, power reserve, winding system, complications, and any test that applies to the exact calibre. Do not infer performance from origin.
- Track record: Find out whether the calibre is established or newly introduced. A newer design has had less time to build a service and reliability record; a common movement may have years of refinement.
- Service and parts: Ask who can work on the calibre, whether parts are available outside the brand’s network, and what service costs and turnaround times are in your location. A newer or rarer proprietary calibre may have narrower service access, while common sourced movements can have a wider service ecosystem.
- Price and personal value: Decide whether distinctive engineering, finishing, or brand identity is worth the price difference to you. Internal production can require investment, but the label by itself does not prove that a watch is good value.

- What is the exact calibre designation? Ask whether it is based on another movement and how it was developed.
- What did the brand actually do? Ask which parts or systems it designed or manufactured and which are supplier-sourced.
- Where are the main production steps performed? Check where the movement is assembled, regulated, and tested.
- What evidence supports its performance? Request the specification or test that applies to this model. The “in-house” label is not itself a test or certification.
- How will you get it serviced? Ask who can service the calibre near you, whether parts are available beyond the brand network, and what service costs and turnaround times to expect.
- How mature is the calibre? Ask when it was introduced and whether it has an established service and reliability record.
Answers can vary by model and location. Verify service arrangements and specifications for the particular watch you are considering rather than relying on a general brand claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does an in-house movement matter to you?
It may matter if you value a brand’s technical independence, a distinctive movement architecture, or the connection between the calibre and the brand’s watchmaking identity. It may matter less if your priorities are day-to-day performance, ease of service, parts availability, and cost of ownership. The useful comparison is between the two watches’ actual specifications, movement histories, and service propositions—not an abstract in-house-versus-outsourced score.
