Piaget Polo S Review: Does It Really Change the Game?

The Polo S expanded Piaget’s sport-luxury reach in steel, but its legacy is a strategic shift more than a radical design change.

The Piaget Polo S changed Piaget’s positioning more than it changed luxury sports-watch design. Launched in 2016 as a steel, sportier take on the Polo, it brought the brand’s name and manufacture movements to a broader sport-luxury conversation. Its shape-in-shape case and textured dial give it a distinct identity, but its resemblance to the Patek Philippe Nautilus—and divided reviews of its bracelet and wrist presence—make “game changer” too strong as a design verdict.

What the Polo S changed for Piaget

Piaget dates the Polo collection to 1979. The Polo S, introduced in 2016, carried that name into a stainless-steel sports-watch format, a more casual expression than the precious-metal and ultra-thin watches most closely associated with the brand. The “S” has been described as standing for “Sport”; launch coverage also discussed steel in connection with the name, so neither explanation should be treated as the sole settled origin.

That shift matters more as a business and collection move than as a claim of design revolution. Hodinkee’s 2016 launch-price coverage saw the chronograph as strategically sensible for Piaget, while cautioning that collectors looking for a radical design risk might find it safe. The Polo S gave Piaget a credible presence in the steel sport-luxury category, but the available evidence does not establish a measurable market-share or sales impact.

Piaget’s current US collection describes the Polo as an “iconic symbol of casual elegance and sporty sophistication.” That is the brand’s positioning, not independent proof that the 2016 Polo S transformed the category.

Design: Piaget identity beside familiar sports-watch cues

The shape-in-shape case and dial

The launch-era automatic pairs a cushion-shaped dial with a round 42 mm steel case. Horizontal ridges on the dial echo the striped design language of the historic Polo. That texture is also the feature most readily compared with the Nautilus, making the resemblance difficult to ignore.

Time+Tide’s Felix Scholz read the Polo S as an evolution of Piaget design, pointing to links with the Emperador and earlier Polo line and placing shared visual traits in a broader 1970s-inspired idiom. Hodinkee’s 2017 chronograph review was more direct: “There’s no question the Polo S looks like the Nautilus, but that’s not a reason to discount the watch entirely.” The fair conclusion is comparison, not a claim that the Polo S is a copy.

Dial details and changing light

Writing about a slate-grey example, Scholz noted that the dial’s ridges shift between grey, silver and near-black as the light changes. He also called out luminous hands and markers and a seconds hand with a “P” counterweight. Those are observations about the reviewed dial, not guarantees about every Polo S color or reference.

How it wears, and why bracelet reviews differ

The 42 mm case is a useful starting point, not a reliable predictor of fit on every wrist. In Hodinkee’s chronograph review, the case initially felt high and large to the reviewer. That is one wearer’s impression; try the exact reference on if proportions matter to you.

Reviews of the bracelet are notably split. Time+Tide praised its fit and finish, especially the detailed brushing on the center links, while warning that the clasp would show wear. Hodinkee’s chronograph reviewer found the bracelet slim for the case and its finishing rough. These are different reviewers assessing different versions, not a single consensus. Hodinkee also noted that the bracelet is not fully integrated, so the watch can be worn on a strap; confirm fit for the exact reference before buying a replacement.

Automatic and chronograph: the launch-era specifications

The original Polo S range included a three-hand automatic and a chronograph. Both were described in launch coverage as using automatic manufacture movements. These published specifications and review observations are not independent laboratory measurements.

Polo S Automatic Calibre 1110P Time and date, with the date at six. Time+Tide reported a movement thickness of 4 mm and a frequency of 4 Hz; Hodinkee’s 2016 hands-on review reported approximately 50 hours of power reserve.
Polo S Chronograph Calibre 1160P Two-register chronograph with the date at six, as described in Hodinkee’s launch-era coverage. No comparable power-reserve figure is established here.

Time+Tide praised the 1110P’s finishing but noted the absence of a silicon escapement and of an unusually long reserve. Those are the reviewer’s evaluation and comparison, not evidence of a measured performance shortfall. Hodinkee’s chronograph reviewer found the controls clean and precise; that assessment likewise describes the reviewer’s experience rather than a durability or accuracy test.

Launch prices are historical, not current valuations

Prices reported at launch differ by publication and market. Hodinkee listed US retail prices in 2016; Time+Tide gave Australian prices in its 2016 review. They should not be compared as though they were prices from the same country, date, or market.

What current listings do—and do not—tell you

Piaget’s official US site presents a current Polo collection, but that does not confirm that every historical Polo S reference remains available new. Seller listings are snapshots, not a complete account of stock or market value.

Listing checked October 4, 2026 What it showed How to read it
The 1916 Company: G0A41002, listed as Polo Date $15,800 A seller-specific listed price; it does not establish universal availability or market value.
Tourneau/Bucherer: pre-owned G0A41002 $12,900; marked out of stock An out-of-stock pre-owned listing, not a current offer to buy.

Before comparing listings, verify the reference, condition, box and papers, warranty, seller status, and actual stock. A listing alone does not prove that a seller is authorized or that another retailer has the same watch available.

Who should consider a Polo S?

  • Consider it if you want a Piaget sports watch with a manufacture movement, a textured dial, and a design that connects to the brand’s older Polo language.
  • Try it on first if case height, visual size, or bracelet feel are decisive. Reviewer impressions vary, and a 42 mm measurement cannot settle personal fit.
  • Compare it closely if Nautilus-like cues are a concern. The Polo S has Piaget-specific references, but the horizontal dial and overall steel sport-watch idiom invite the comparison.
  • Check the exact reference if buying pre-owned or changing to a strap. Confirm condition, what is included, warranty terms, and compatibility rather than assuming all listings or straps are interchangeable.

Verdict: a meaningful strategic move, not a design reset

The Polo S deserves to be taken seriously: as Felix Scholz put it in his 2016 review, “you have a watch to be taken seriously.” Its importance lies in bringing Piaget’s Polo identity into steel sport-luxury, supported by automatic manufacture movements and distinctive case-and-dial execution. The design debate is real, the bracelet response is not unanimous, and no evidence here proves a radical change to the wider watch market. “Game changer” fits Piaget’s strategic direction better than it fits the watch’s design impact.
