The Tissot Mediostat is “unstoppable” in a literal, unusual sense: its central chronograph hand is described as running continuously, and its single pusher briefly stops it only while you hold the button partway down. Press farther to reset the hand; release it and it runs again. That is a very different tool from a conventional start-stop-reset chronograph—and it raises the fair question: what would you use it for?
How the Mediostat’s single pusher works
Fratello’s 2019 feature describes the central chronograph hand as running by default. The pusher at 2 o’clock is pressure-sensitive, not a conventional click-through sequence:
- Press partway and hold: the central hand stops for as long as pressure is maintained.
- Press fully: the hand resets to zero.
- Release: the hand resumes its continuous motion.
In a 2022 follow-up, feature author Tomas Rosputinsky summarized the behavior this way: “The only way to stop the chronograph hand is to press the pusher halfway and hold your finger there (with another half push to reset it).” This is Rosputinsky’s description of the watch, not a Tissot manual or factory statement. The follow-up also notes that the Mediostat has no minute counter.
That operating logic changes what the chronograph can do. A conventional chronograph can start timing an event, stop at its end, and preserve the elapsed time for reading. The Mediostat, as described, does not leave the hand stopped when you let go: its temporary pause requires continued pressure. It is better understood as a momentary stop-and-reset instrument than as a conventional elapsed-time recorder.

- The G10.212 chrono quartz movement provides precision and robustness, complemented by water resistance up to 10 bar (100 meters/330 feet), and visibility in low-light conditions is guaranteed by the Super-LumiNova coating on the needle-shaped hands.
What might a continuously running chronograph be for?
The 2019 feature says period advertising presented the Mediostat to doctors as well as technicians, engineers, and sportsmen. That suggests the intended audience was broader than medical practice alone, though the feature does not provide a complete advertisement archive or establish a specific use for each group.
The mechanism’s practical appeal is less obvious today than its novelty. A user can arrest the hand momentarily to make a reading or observation, then let it continue, but the hand does not preserve a stopped interval after release. Without a minute counter, the watch also lacks one of the features that makes many chronographs useful for longer elapsed-time measurements. The sources describe the action; they do not establish exactly how Tissot expected owners to use it in each profession.

What is known about the Mediostat’s history and design
Fratello’s 2019 feature dates the Mediostat’s introduction to around the end of 1942 and attributes its movement to Tissot caliber 27.53, described as derived from a widely used basic caliber. These are secondary-source reports: no primary Tissot document confirming the date or movement details is established here.
The example discussed in that feature has a reported 33 mm stainless-steel case. Its design details include syringe-style hands, Arabic numerals, and a prominent single pusher. The feature also notes dial variations, with some examples reportedly carrying a tachymeter scale; these details should not be assumed to apply to every Mediostat.

What to consider if you are looking for one
The available accounts support caution about condition, but not a universal checklist of Mediostat defects. Rosputinsky’s 2019 example had an aftermarket crown, aged or burnt-out luminous numerals, a central hand he considered questionable-looking, and a slightly wobbly pusher. Those are observations about one watch, not proof that the same issues are common or an authentication standard.
- Inspect the specific watch: assess the dial, hands, crown, case, and pusher individually rather than assuming the feature’s example represents the model.
- Ask about the mechanism: because the pusher action is central to the watch’s identity, establish whether it behaves as described and whether its operating condition has been evaluated by a qualified watchmaker.
- Keep originality distinct from function: a watch may operate while having replacement or altered parts; the cited condition account alone cannot establish what is original on another example.
The 2019 author says dial condition can be difficult to judge and that Mediostats do not appear frequently at auction. In 2022, the same author characterized the model as niche and scarce, estimating from personal market watching that perhaps one example appears for sale every year or two. That is anecdotal observation, not a systematic count or a current inventory figure.

The 2019 article also mentions a price tag around €1,000. That is a publication-era anecdote, not a present valuation, typical transaction price, or buying recommendation. No current authenticated sales comparisons or market price are established here, so a buyer should not treat that figure as a benchmark.
Why the Mediostat remains an unusual vintage Tissot
The Mediostat’s interest lies in a chronograph that does not behave like the familiar timing tool: its hand runs continuously, a half-press holds it still only while pressed, and a full press resets it. The reported early-1940s context, compact example size, and varied dials add historical and collecting interest, but primary documentation, production totals, complete variant chronology, and current market evidence remain unestablished.
