The Model 3 manual lists specific supported Apple Watch families, but that model-specific list should not be assumed to apply to every Tesla; check the manual for your vehicle.
What you need before it will work
| Requirement | Tesla’s documented minimum |
|---|---|
| Tesla app | Version 4.39.5 or later |
| Vehicle software | Version 2024.44.25 or later |
| Apple Watch software | watchOS 11 or later |
| Apple Watch hardware listed in the Model 3 manual | Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Apple Watch Ultra (1st generation), or newer |
The app, vehicle, and watch all need to meet the applicable requirements. Tesla’s Model 3 manual specifies the watch families above for Model 3; confirm the requirements in your own vehicle’s manual rather than treating that list as a universal compatibility chart. Tesla’s reviewed materials do not provide a complete model-by-model or region-by-region eligibility table. If the Tesla app is missing from your watch, Tesla advises updating the iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest available software.
What the official Tesla watch app does
Tesla Support lists Watch Key, frunk access, charge status, charge-port access, and climate controls. The Model 3 Owner’s Manual also describes locking and unlocking and opening and closing the trunk from the watch. Controls may vary by vehicle, so check the manual for your model.
| Source | Documented watch controls |
|---|---|
| Tesla Support | Watch Key, frunk, charge status, charge port, and climate |
| Model 3 Owner’s Manual | Locking and unlocking, opening the frunk, and opening and closing the trunk |
These are a focused set of wrist-level actions, not a promise that every feature in Tesla’s iPhone app is available on Apple Watch.

How to add Tesla to Apple Watch
- Confirm the Tesla app, vehicle software, and watchOS meet the published minimums.
- Pair the mobile device with the Apple Watch.
- If Tesla is not on the watch, use the Watch app on the iPhone to add the Tesla app.
- Open Tesla from the Apple Watch app list and follow the prompts.
- For Watch Key, complete setup while standing near the vehicle.
Watch Key pairing and backup access
If Watch Key setup fails, stand next to the vehicle during setup. Tesla says that if several phone keys are connected, turning off Bluetooth on the mobile device may reduce active connections and help setup finish.
Tesla recommends keeping a functioning physical key available when parking where cellular service is limited or unavailable, such as an indoor garage. Do not assume every watch feature will work offline.

Official app versus third-party Tesla watch apps
This is Tesla’s own app for iPhone and Apple Watch. The Model 3 Owner’s Manual says Tesla does not support third-party applications contacting the vehicle. A third-party watch app is not the same as Tesla’s supported Apple Watch experience.
Is an Apple Watch worth buying for Tesla access?
If you already want an Apple Watch for other reasons, Tesla access may be a useful extra. Before buying one specifically for this feature, check the requirements for your vehicle and confirm that the watch family and software are supported. The Model 3 manual lists Series 6, SE (2nd generation), Ultra (1st generation), or newer; do not assume that list applies to every Tesla model.
