For most athletes, the Polar H10 is the strongest all-around heart-rate monitor, especially for intervals and rapid changes in effort. If you prefer an armband, the Polar Verity Sense is a versatile option with onboard recording and a swimming-goggle clip; Garmin users seeking advanced metrics should consider the newer HRM 600.

Chest straps measure electrical activity and generally respond quickly to changing intensity, while well-fitted armbands can track closely during many steady workouts. The right pick depends on fit, sport, connectivity, and whether you need stored or live readings.

Chest strap or optical armband?

Consideration Chest strap Optical armband
How it measures Measures electrical activity through electrodes against the skin Uses optical sensing to estimate pulse from blood flow
Rapid changes in effort Generally responds quickly, making it a strong interval choice May lag during rapid changes; performance varies by device and fit
Steady running or treadmill workouts Can provide consistent workout data Well-fitted models can track closely with chest straps in tested sessions
Fit and comfort Must be snug against the chest; some people find straps restrictive Must stay snug and block outside light without restricting circulation
Swimming Wireless transmission may not work while submerged; storage or compatible transmission features matter Water performance varies; the Verity Sense offers a goggle clip and onboard recording

REI’s comparisons found the COROS Heart Rate Monitor armband, Polar Verity Sense, and Garmin HRM 600 produced nearly identical data in tested running and treadmill sessions. The same REI testing found the COROS Apex 2 Pro wrist monitor diverged substantially from chest-strap and armband traces, and that pool readings were less consistent across device types. These are test findings, not a guarantee of results for every person or workout.

How to get better readings

  1. Moisten chest-strap electrodes. Polar’s setup guidance recommends a good skin connection. Moisten the contact areas and wear the strap snugly, with the transmitter centered.
  2. Keep the receiving device in front of you. Polar advises this because a phone in a back pocket or backpack can reduce Bluetooth reliability.
  3. Pair and update as directed. Polar advises pairing the H10 with Polar Flow first so firmware can be updated. For other products, use the manufacturer’s or fitness app’s pairing steps.
  4. Position an armband securely. Keep it snug enough to block outside light without restricting circulation. For swimming with the Verity Sense, make sure the goggle clip holds the sensor firmly against the temple.
  5. Check connection compatibility. Confirm whether your receiving device needs Bluetooth, ANT+, or both. The COROS armband is Bluetooth-only and will not work with ANT+-only equipment.
  6. Give the Wahoo TRACKR its first charge. It ships in low-power mode and needs to be connected to a charger and power source before first use.

What testing supports

REI’s comparisons found that dedicated chest straps and armbands tracked closely in several steady-state and interval comparisons, while its tested COROS Apex 2 Pro wrist monitor diverged substantially. REI also observed reduced consistency underwater. These results support choosing a dedicated monitor for training when readings matter, but they do not mean every armband is inaccurate or that every strap will fit every person equally well.

Verywell Fit reported that the Wahoo TICKR FIT was less consistent during weight lifting than during running and cycling. Optical sensors can face challenges during gripping, arm flexion, and abrupt movement. For rapid changes in effort, a chest strap remains the safer general recommendation; during steady workouts, a well-fitted armband may be a comfortable alternative.

Heart-rate monitors are fitness tools, not substitutes for medical diagnosis. Seek medical help for concerning symptoms rather than relying on a training sensor.

FAQ

Are chest straps more accurate than armbands?

Chest straps generally have an advantage when effort changes quickly because they measure electrical activity. Research comparisons found several armbands tracked closely with chest straps in running and treadmill sessions, so a well-fitted armband can be a good choice for many steady workouts.

Does the COROS Heart Rate Monitor work with ANT+?

No. It uses Bluetooth and does not support ANT+. Check that your watch, bike computer, or other receiver supports Bluetooth before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a heart-rate monitor while swimming?

Some models support swimming, but readings and transmission vary underwater. The Polar Verity Sense can record workouts internally and includes a swimming-goggle clip. Garmin HRM 600 supports swimming heart-rate transmission only with compatible Garmin devices.

How do I get a reliable reading from a chest strap?

Moisten the electrode areas, wear the strap snugly against the skin, and keep the transmitter centered. If using Bluetooth, keep the receiving device in front of your body rather than in a back pocket or backpack.

What should I check before buying a monitor?

Match its connection standards to your receiving device, check strap or band sizing, and decide whether you need onboard storage, rechargeable power, or specific sport features. Battery figures also describe different things: coin-cell hours, active operating time, and calendar estimates are not directly interchangeable.

The Bottom Line

The Polar H10 is the best general-purpose pick for athletes who want a dependable electrical chest strap and internal recording. Choose the Garmin HRM 600 for compatible Garmin features, Wahoo TRACKR HEART RATE for a rechargeable chest strap, or Polar Verity Sense for an armband with onboard storage and a swimming-goggle clip. Before buying, check fit, receiver compatibility, and whether your sport needs live readings or stored data.
