The ABCs of Watch Complications: What Extra Hands on a Mechanical Watch Do

A watch’s extra hand may track a second time zone, measure elapsed time or indicate a calendar function. Its scale and the maker’s instructions tell you how to read it.

Extra hands on a mechanical watch can track a second time zone, measure elapsed time, or point to a calendar indication—but a hand’s purpose depends on the scale and dial layout around it. In watchmaking, a “complication” is any function beyond the basic display of hours, minutes and, sometimes, seconds. Complications can appear as hands, subdials, windows or apertures; an extra hand is only one way to show one.

What are the extra hands on a watch for?

Start with the markings the hand points to. A hand paired with a 24-hour scale may show a second time zone; a hand that starts, stops and resets may be part of a chronograph; a pointer moving around a date track may indicate the calendar. A small subdial can show elapsed time or seconds, but its purpose is not universal.

Watchmakers use the term complication for a function beyond basic time display. Patek Philippe defines it as “anything a mechanical watch might do beyond telling the time.” NOMOS likewise describes a basic display as hours, minutes and perhaps seconds, with added functions requiring additional movement parts. Neither definition means that every complication has an extra hand.

To identify an unfamiliar indication, look for its scale, labels, subdial, and controls, then check the instructions for the specific model. The same-looking hand can serve different purposes on different watches.

How does a GMT hand show another time zone?

A GMT hand is generally read against a 24-hour scale, completing one revolution in 24 hours to distinguish day from night in the second time zone. In the common arrangement described by the Fondation Haute Horlogerie, the central hour and minute hands show local time and the additional hand indicates home time on a 24-hour scale. Some watches place the second time on a 12-hour subdial instead; that layout is often called dual time.

The scale may be printed on the dial or marked on a rotating bezel. MIDO describes a GMT function as using an additional hand that makes one full turn in 24 hours with a 24-hour bezel. Read the hand against the scale intended for it, not the ordinary 12-hour hour markers, unless the watch’s instructions specify otherwise.

Setting methods differ. For example, Blancpain describes a half-time-zone mechanism in which the second zone can be adjusted in 30-minute increments and both the hour and minute hands move. That is a model-specific design, not a universal GMT setting rule. Consult the maker’s instructions before changing the time or date.

How do chronograph hands and registers work?

A chronograph is a stopwatch function: it measures elapsed time. Depending on the watch, a central chronograph seconds hand may be paired with small registers for elapsed minutes or hours. A separate small-seconds hand may show the watch’s continuously running seconds, so do not assume every seconds hand measures a timed event.

Read the labels and scales on the particular dial to determine what each register counts. Some chronograph scales also support calculations: Patek Philippe gives speed, distance using light or sound, and pulse as examples. Those uses depend on the scale and the watch’s design; the chronograph’s basic job remains measuring elapsed time.

Which additional functions use a hand—and which do not?

Calendar and other indications may appear as pointers, subdials, windows or apertures. Common functions include date, day, month, moon phase and power reserve, but the display format varies by watch.

  • Date, day and month: A date may appear in a window, while a calendar pointer can indicate a number around the dial. More elaborate calendars may display several calendar details.
  • Moon phase: This depicts the moon’s phase as seen from Earth and may be shown in an aperture or with a hand.
  • Power reserve: This indicates remaining running time or the state of the mainspring. It is often shown on a scale or subdial rather than by an additional central hand.

For a model-specific example, Jaeger-LeCoultre lists a chronograph, triple calendar, moon phase, pulsometric scale and a 65-hour power reserve for Calibre 759 in its Master Control Chronograph Calendar Q4138431. Those specifications describe that named model, not chronographs or calendars generally. A. Lange & Söhne’s GRAND COMPLICATION page describes a chronograph, a perpetual calendar with date, day, month and leap-year indications, and a moon-phase display; it says the calendar displays are designed to advance instantaneously.

How to compare watches with additional indications

When deciding whether an extra indication will be useful, compare what it does and how clearly it can be read—not simply how many hands the watch has.

  • Function: Does it show another time zone, elapsed time, calendar information, power reserve or something else you need?
  • Reading method: Is the indication a central hand and scale, a subdial, a window or an aperture? Are its markings distinct from the time display?
  • Practical use: Would you regularly use the function for travel, timing or a quick date reference?
  • Setting and layout: Are the controls and instructions clear? Second-zone mechanisms and adjustment increments can vary.
  • Legibility: Can you distinguish the relevant pointer, scale and markings at a glance?

There is no universal function count that makes a watch a “grand complication”; NOMOS notes that the term has no single definition. A more useful comparison is whether the functions and display suit your needs and are understandable to you.

How can you identify an unfamiliar extra hand?

  1. Look for a matching scale. A 24-hour scale suggests a second-time-zone indication; a date track may be paired with a calendar pointer.
  2. Check nearby labels and subdials. Markings such as minutes or hours can help distinguish elapsed-time registers from running seconds.
  3. Observe the controls and movement only as directed. Chronograph pushers, crowns and other controls can offer clues, but do not operate an unfamiliar watch based on appearance alone.
  4. Find the exact model instructions. The maker’s manual explains what each hand indicates and how to set it safely. Similar complications do not guarantee identical layouts or setting procedures.
