There was no official “best” or “worst” watch at Watches & Wonders Geneva 2025. The fairest verdict is editorial: GQ’s picks favored standout design and broad appeal, while Hodinkee’s choices emphasized enthusiast interest, value and practicality. Those different standards produced very different winners—and no defensible universal loser.
What “best and worst” means at Watches & Wonders
Watches & Wonders Geneva ran April 1–7, 2025, at Palexpo, with public days April 5–7. Its official novelty catalog is a roster of releases, not a ranking. The event’s closing release reported 55,000+ visitors, up 12% from 2024, and 23,000 public-day tickets sold, up 21%; those are figures reported by the organizer, not independently audited attendance estimates. The foundation’s closing release also named smaller sizes, textured and colorful dials, and skeleton watches among the year’s trends. A trend describes what appeared; it does not establish that a watch is good or bad.
“Best” depends on the test. A technically ambitious complication may be a horological feat but impractical for everyday wear. A more attainable watch may be a better recommendation for someone who wants to buy and wear a new release. “Worst” is even harder to establish: the reviewed coverage offers no shared scoring system or consistent set of watch-specific negative reviews. The picks below are attributed editorial judgments, not an objective league table.
GQ’s standouts: variety, wearability and broad appeal
GQ’s April 4 roundup selected 24 watches, spanning complications, dive watches, accessible sports models and formal designs. Its selection included the Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Perpetual Calendar, Tudor Pelagos Ultra, TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph, Oris Big Crown Pointer Date, Grand Seiko Spring Drive SLGB001 and Cartier Tank à Guichets. GQ’s complete picks show how wide the fair’s range was; they do not establish a single winner.

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph: the everyday-minded pick
GQ praised the Solargraph’s 38 mm case and solar-powered movement. That pairing makes it an appealing choice for someone who values a relatively compact sports watch and does not want battery changes to be the central ownership concern. It is a stronger recommendation for practical daily use than for someone whose main criterion is mechanical watchmaking complexity.
Tudor Pelagos Ultra: capability first
GQ described the Pelagos Ultra as a 43 mm titanium dive watch with 1,000 m water resistance and METAS Master Chronometer certification. Those are substantial specifications, but they point to a particular kind of watch: a large, purpose-led diver. Its size and extreme water-resistance rating may be less compelling to a buyer who wants a discreet, versatile watch for ordinary wear. The specifications and assessment here are GQ’s descriptions, not independent test findings.

Oris Big Crown Pointer Date: the value-minded choice
GQ characterized the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date as a strong value proposition. That is a useful editorial signal for readers who want an individual design and a more accessible-feeling proposition than an elaborate haute horlogerie release. The source does not supply a current price comparison, so “value” should be read as GQ’s judgment rather than a claim about today’s market pricing.
Hodinkee’s picks: enthusiast appeal, travel utility and retail realism
Hodinkee’s selections make the case that the most interesting watch is not always the rarest or most technically extravagant. Its contributors used their own criteria, including whether an enthusiast could realistically buy a watch at retail. Hodinkee’s picks are therefore best understood as personal recommendations, not a consensus ranking.

A. Lange & Söhne 1815 in 34 mm: a collector’s best
Ben Clymer named the 34 mm A. Lange & Söhne 1815 his best watch for an enthusiast who might realistically buy at retail. His framing matters: other favorites may be more constrained by scarcity, price or design, and a “best” watch for one collector can be an unrealistic or unsuitable target for another. This is a strong enthusiast choice under Clymer’s stated criterion, not a claim that it is the fairest purchase for every buyer.
Nomos Club Sport Worldtimer: a travel-focused value choice
TanTan Wang chose the Nomos Club Sport Worldtimer for its value proposition and travel functionality. Hodinkee listed a 40 mm case, 9.9 mm height, 100 m water resistance and an integrated second-time-zone caliber, along with a price of $4,720. Those dimensions and that price are figures as stated in the article at its publication time, not confirmation of current pricing, availability or a particular market’s present offer. The combination makes the watch a compelling pick for someone who wants a world-time display in a relatively slim sports-watch format.

The technical extremes: impressive does not always mean practical
WatchTime’s coverage highlighted technically ambitious releases such as Vacheron Constantin’s Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication and Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon. It also noted interest across ceramic, métiers d’art dials, technical innovation, jewelry watches, precious metals and Formula 1. WatchTime’s event coverage provides context for the fair’s range, but technical superlatives should remain attributed to WatchTime or the named manufacturer unless independently confirmed.
These watches belong in a different conversation from an everyday recommendation. A grand complication or record-focused ultra-thin watch can be a major demonstration of craft and engineering while remaining inaccessible or impractical for most buyers. That is not a failure of the watch; it is a mismatch if the judging criterion is wearability, value or realistic retail access. Conversely, judging only by utility would miss why collectors and watchmakers care about ambitious complications.
Best Value
- 【Italian Tuscany leather】 — The leather is made of vegetable tanned cowhide leather from the famous Italian leather factory BADALASSI CARLO. This leather is tanned with natural vegetable tanning agents, avoiding the use of harmful chemicals. It is natural and harmless to the skin.
- 【Natural Full-Grain Leather】 — Each strap retains the original pores and natural grain, giving it a unique character and authentic feel. Over time, Italian vegetable-tanned leather softens and develops a rich patina and luster, reflecting timeless elegance and sophistication. A premium material trusted by luxury brands, it makes your watch truly stand out.
- 【Unique Features of Un‑Sandered Full‑Grain Leather】 — Our watch strap is made of high‑quality full‑grain leather. This natural leather has not been sanded, so its original surface pores remain clearly visible. Since each hide is distinct, there will be natural variations in grain patterns, particle size and color tone. Please understand that slight differences between your delivered strap and our main images are expected and are not manufacturing flaws. Every single strap is truly one‑of‑a‑kind.
- 【ISO9001 Certified】— Raw leather materials are sourced from Tuscany, Italy and shipped to China by sea for processing. All items are manufactured in strict accordance with the ISO9001 quality management system to deliver consistent premium quality.
- 【Structure & Size Selection】— Please measure your watch lug width before purchasing. The strap comes in a length of 120mm + 75mm, fitting most wrist sizes. The buckle‑side thickness is 4.5 mm, while the tail‑end thickness is 3.2 mm. Designed with quick‑release spring bars for effortless installation and replacement. For construction: The top layer is full‑grain cowhide, the bottom lining is top‑grain cowhide, and the middle layer is filled with cowhide and foam for shaping and reinforcement.
So which watches were the worst?
No specific release can responsibly be called the event’s objective worst based on the available coverage: there is no common scoring method, and the cited roundups are positive selections rather than systematic reviews of failures. Calling a watch “worst” simply because it is large, expensive, ornate or technically extravagant would confuse personal taste with quality.
A more useful negative verdict is conditional. The Pelagos Ultra may be a poor fit for someone seeking a small, low-profile daily watch; the technical showpieces may be poor fits for buyers prioritizing accessibility or ordinary wear; and a trend-led dial may not suit someone who values restraint. Those are fit judgments, not evidence that the watches are badly made or universally disliked. Time+Tide likewise frames best-and-worst lists as taste-based panel exercises and cautions that a reader is not wrong for liking a watch a contributor dismisses. Its discussion of the subjectivity of watch rankings is a useful reminder to treat criticism as a stated preference, not a verdict on everyone’s taste.
How to choose a standout from the fair
- For practical everyday wear: start with size, comfort and the functions you will use. GQ’s praise for the 38 mm TAG Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph points toward a compact, low-maintenance sports-watch option.
- For dive-watch capability: the Tudor Pelagos Ultra’s specifications are the standout, provided its 43 mm format suits your wrist and intended use.
- For enthusiast appeal: Clymer’s 34 mm A. Lange & Söhne 1815 pick is explicitly framed around realistic retail access for an enthusiast.
- For travel functionality: Wang’s Nomos Club Sport Worldtimer choice centers on its second-time-zone function and value proposition.
- For technical spectacle: the Vacheron Constantin and Bulgari releases discussed by WatchTime better answer a question about watchmaking ambition than one about everyday value.
Before treating any 2025 release as a current buying option, check with retailers for current price, stock and market-specific availability. The cited coverage does not establish present listings.
