Robert-Jan Broer’s five gold Speedmaster picks are a personal ranking based on design and story—not current prices or investment potential. His September 14, 2021 Fratello article ranges from Apollo-era commemoratives to a modern Canopus Gold Moonwatch and a white-gold Moonphase. The figures below describe the watches as Broer presented them in 2021; they are not current prices or confirmation of availability. Read Broer’s original article at Fratello Watches.
How to read RJ’s gold Speedmaster ranking
“Best” here means Broer’s design-and-story preference. It is not an objective ranking by performance, rarity, market value, or investment return. He favored the 2019 Apollo XI 50th Anniversary over the original Apollo XI gold Speedmaster, while his other selections reflect different reasons to choose gold: a modern regular-collection Moonwatch, a scarce 1980 commemorative, and a Moonphase with additional complications.

His list also mixes historical and modern watches. Numbered editions and vintage references call for especially careful checks of parts and condition; the Canopus Gold model is described as an unnumbered regular-collection watch, while the Moonphase adds calendar and moonphase functions beyond the standard chronograph layout.
The five gold Speedmasters
1. Apollo XI 50th Anniversary, ref. 310.60.42.50.99.001
Broer’s favorite is the 2019 Apollo XI 50th Anniversary in 18 ct Moonshine Gold. He preferred its contemporary execution to the 1969 original, citing the 42 mm case, gold hands, onyx markers, ceramic bezel, burgundy-red bezel detail, and bracelet design. A piece of lunar meteorite is incorporated into the caseback.
#1 Best Overall
- Model 310.30.42.50.01.002
Broer reported a numbered edition of 1,014 pieces. His article listed a €32,000 official retail price and said the edition was sold out at the time of writing; both statements are 2021-era context, not an indication of today’s stock or price.
2. Apollo XI “Tribute to Astronauts,” ref. BA145.022-69
This is the original 18 ct yellow-gold Apollo XI commemorative Speedmaster Professional. Broer reported that 1,014 numbered examples were produced between 1969 and 1973. His description includes a 42 mm case, caliber 861, solid-gold dial, and gold bracelet.
The watch’s age and distinctive burgundy aluminum bezel insert make originality a practical concern: Broer notes that original inserts and other spare parts can be difficult to source, and that vintage examples may contain replacement parts. His approximate starting-price figure was €40,000 in 2021; it should not be treated as a current valuation.
Rank #2
- Stainless steel case
- Black dial
- Swiss-automatic movement
- Case diameter: 40mm
- Water resistant to 330 feet
3. Canopus Gold Moonwatch, ref. 310.60.42.50.02.001
Broer describes this 42 mm model as an 18 ct Canopus white-gold Moonwatch with caliber 3861 Master Chronometer movement, silvery step dial, aluminum bezel insert, and gold bracelet. A leather-strap configuration was also listed. Unlike the numbered commemoratives, he presented it as an unnumbered regular-collection model.
The 2021 article listed retail prices of €45,100 on bracelet and €30,200 on leather strap. Those are historical figures, not current offers or evidence of present availability.
4. Apollo XI “Space Shuttle,” refs. BA345.0802 and BC345.0802
Broer’s 1980 Space Shuttle picks are a yellow-gold BA version and a white-gold BC version. He reported production of 300 BA345.0802 watches and 20 BC345.0802 watches. The article describes a numbered 42 mm watch with display caseback and caliber 861L.
According to Broer, the white-gold BC version was intended for the German market; he cautions that it can be confused with a later 1994 white-gold model. Identification should therefore be based on the exact reference and the individual watch’s documentation and condition, not metal color alone. The article’s approximate €30,000 starting price is from 2021.
5. White-gold Moonphase, ref. 3689.30
The Moonphase is the list’s complication-focused choice. Broer says the 18 ct white-gold Speedmaster Professional was introduced in 1999 and production ended around 2005. It uses caliber 1866 and combines the chronograph with calendar and moonphase functions.

Which one fits which kind of buyer?
- For a modern commemorative design: The 2019 Apollo XI 50th Anniversary combines the Apollo XI story with contemporary details and Moonshine Gold.
- For the original Apollo-era gold commemorative: The BA145.022-69 is the direct vintage choice, but its parts originality and condition deserve close attention.
- For a modern gold Moonwatch without a numbered-edition premise: Broer presents the Canopus model as an unnumbered regular-collection watch, with bracelet and strap configurations.
- For a less common historical variant: The Space Shuttle models have distinct yellow- and white-gold references and reported production counts; the BC white-gold watch needs careful distinction from the later model Broer mentions.
- For added calendar and moonphase functions: The 3689.30 differs from the other picks through its caliber 1866 complication set.
What to verify before buying
The 2021 article is a useful guide to why Broer selected these watches, but it does not establish present-day stock, transaction prices, or the authenticity of any specific listing. OMEGA’s 2026 press material continues to identify Moonshine Gold and Canopus Gold among Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional variants, but that does not confirm availability of any exact reference in this list. See OMEGA’s press announcements.
For any example, match the reference and configuration to reliable records, then evaluate the individual watch rather than relying on a model name or seller description. For vintage pieces in particular, ask for clear evidence of originality and service history.

Quick Recap
- Confirm the reference, gold alloy, dial, bezel, hands, bracelet or strap, and caseback against the specific model being offered.
- Request documentation and service records, and have the watch examined by a qualified watchmaker or specialist where possible.
- For vintage examples, establish which parts are original and which have been replaced or restored; pay particular attention to the BA145.022-69 bezel insert and the identity of the white-gold Space Shuttle reference.
- Compare current listings and seller reputation before treating a price as representative. The source article’s prices are from 2021.
