For most buyers, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the safest overall choice: independent testing finds excellent full-range noise isolation, particularly against office chatter and transport noise, along with strong calls, multipoint connectivity, and more than 30 hours of measured battery life with ANC enabled.
It is not an uncontested winner. Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if comfort, roomy earcups, glasses compatibility, and natural transparency matter more than a small difference in laboratory isolation. Choose the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless for its 57-hour ANC battery, sound customization, and user-replaceable battery. Choose the AirPods Max 2 if you are deeply invested in Apple devices, and the JLab JBuds Lux ANC when the budget is closer to $60–$80.
This guide covers over-ear wireless headphones. Earbuds are a separate decision because their fit, passive isolation, portability, battery behavior, and ecosystem features differ; see the separate RTINGS noise-canceling guide for that distinction and additional testing.

Noise cancellation is not one number. A headphone can be exceptional at suppressing airplane-engine rumble yet merely average against nearby speech. It can rank first on a test fixture and perform worse on your head if glasses or hair break the seal. It can sound quieter on a train but create more wind turbulence when you walk outside.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
That is why reputable coverage reaches different conclusions. RTINGS ranks the Sony WH-1000XM6 first and finds the Bose only slightly behind on isolation. SoundGuys says Sony has a small raw-ANC advantage, but not necessarily one that is obvious by ear. Tom’s Guide names the Bose its overall pick after hands-on testing, emphasizing how effectively it handles travel and office noise.
Those results are not necessarily contradictory. Ear shape, glasses, hair, pad condition, head size, test noise, measurement method, and the reviewer’s weighting of comfort versus attenuation can all change the result. The right conclusion is conditional:
- Sony is the best default recommendation for broad-spectrum isolation and all-around performance.
- Bose is the better fit-first recommendation for many people, especially those who dislike shallow pads or wear glasses.
- Sennheiser is the better battery, sound, and replaceability choice when absolute ANC is not the only priority.
- Apple is the feature-rich choice for people already using Apple hardware, not the best general value.
Best overall: Sony WH-1000XM6
Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want the strongest all-around combination of ANC, calls, battery life, app control, and multipoint connectivity. RTINGS calls it its best noise-canceling headphone and reports exceptional full-range isolation, particularly strong reduction of midrange noise, more than 31 hours of continuous ANC battery life, and strong microphone performance. Its current U.S. direct price was $459.99 when checked, although Sony launched it at a $449.99 suggested retail price.
Why it leads
The XM6 is especially compelling in an office, café, commute, or train where the problem is not just low engine rumble but also voices, keyboard noise, and revving vehicles. RTINGS reports a substantial improvement over the XM5 in midrange-noise reduction, the range that includes speech and many everyday distractions.
Sony lists up to 30 hours with noise canceling enabled and 40 hours with it disabled. RTINGS measured 31.75 hours continuously in its testing. The headphones use Bluetooth 5.3, support SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3, and offer multipoint for two-device use. They also support analog wired operation and include a detachable cable. These are useful differences if you move between a phone and laptop or want a fallback on an airplane.
The 12-microphone system and QN3 processor are part of Sony’s design. Sony says QN3 is seven times faster than the QN1 used in the XM5, but that is a manufacturer processor comparison, not evidence that ANC is seven times better. Sony’s support page listed firmware version 3.1.5, released June 30, 2026, when checked; firmware can change, so update the headphones before judging them.
The limitations
The XM6’s earcups are relatively shallow. They may fit perfectly for one person and press against another person’s ears, and the arms of glasses can create a leak. If the seal changes when you move the cups slightly, the Bose is probably the safer purchase even if Sony measures a little better in a lab.
The XM6 is also not a sports headset. RTINGS reports that it can slip during vigorous movement. Its warm default sound can put extra emphasis on bass, which may bleed into the mids in dense mixes, although Sony’s app includes a graphic EQ. For gaming, ordinary Bluetooth should not be treated as a guaranteed low-latency connection; use wired audio or a suitable low-latency solution when timing matters.
Best for comfort and travel: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if comfort and a roomy, forgiving fit matter more than winning a close ANC comparison. Bose lists the model at $449 and up to 30 hours of battery life, with Immersive Audio reducing the runtime to as little as 23 hours according to Bose’s product information.
The Bose is the more persuasive choice for people with larger ears, glasses, or a strong dislike of shallow ear cushions. A comfortable seal that survives several hours on an airplane can be more valuable than a small difference between two independent ANC scores. Bose’s Quiet, Aware, Immersion, and Cinema modes make it easy to switch between maximum isolation, transparency, and spatial or immersive listening.
Its transparency mode is a particular strength: Tom’s Guide praised the natural reproduction of voices. That matters when you need to hear a gate announcement, colleague, cashier, doorbell, or family member without removing the headphones. The second generation adds USB-C audio, revised adaptive noise cancellation, a refreshed design, and improved battery life over the first generation. It also supports Bluetooth multipoint for two active device connections.

The Bose does not establish an undisputed ANC victory. RTINGS places Sony marginally ahead, while Tom’s Guide prefers Bose after hands-on travel and office testing. Bose’s touch controls have also drawn criticism from Tom’s Guide; whether that bothers you depends on how often you adjust volume or modes from the earcup.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Immersive Audio is another trade-off. It can provide a more spacious presentation, but it reduces battery life, so do not compare its runtime with the standard 30-hour figure as if they were the same mode. The Bose can also slip during vigorous movement and is not a replacement for secure sports headphones.
Best for battery life, sound customization, and ownership: Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless
Buy the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless if 57-hour ANC battery life, musical sound, codec flexibility, and a replaceable battery matter more than absolute noise isolation. At $399.95 from Sennheiser, it costs less than the Sony, Bose, and Apple flagships while offering the longest stated ANC-on runtime in this group.
Sennheiser rates it for up to 57 hours with ANC enabled and says a 10-minute charge can provide up to seven hours of playback. The 700 mAh battery is user-replaceable, which is a meaningful long-term ownership advantage: a high purchase price does not automatically imply that a headphone’s battery can be replaced.

It also supports USB-C audio and analog audio, multipoint, Dolby Atmos spatial audio, an eight-band EQ, and an Anti-Wind Mode. The supplied support information says the hardware is designed to support Bluetooth 6.0 through a future firmware update; that should be treated as a future promise, not a currently active feature.
Why it is not the overall ANC pick
Sennheiser advertises a major ANC improvement over the previous generation, but that claim is a manufacturer comparison under its own conditions. It should not be interpreted as proof that the Momentum 5 beats Sony or Bose. Independent coverage such as TechRadar’s review is more useful for understanding its sound and tuning, while direct comparative ANC testing should decide whether it suits your environment.
The default sound may benefit from EQ adjustment, depending on your preference. That is not a defect for a listener who likes customization, but it means the Momentum 5 is not necessarily the best choice if you want a perfectly satisfying out-of-box signature. It is also not IP-rated and is not intended for water or excessive sweat.
The older Momentum 4 can be worth investigating if a retailer discounts it substantially and your priority is battery life and sound rather than the newest ANC and replaceable-battery design. Compare the actual sale price, warranty, and remaining stock rather than assuming an older flagship is automatically the better bargain.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBest for Apple users: AirPods Max 2
Choose the AirPods Max 2 only when Apple ecosystem integration is a major reason for the purchase. Apple introduced it on March 16, 2026, and lists it at $549. It adds the H2 chip, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Live Translation, USB-C lossless audio, and low-latency audio.
For someone using an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Vision Pro, those features can outweigh the higher price. Adaptive Audio can blend noise cancellation and awareness, while Conversation Awareness reduces playback when you speak. USB-C lossless and low-latency audio are useful for compatible Apple sources.
Live Translation has specific requirements: AirPods Max 2 must have current firmware, the paired iPhone must support Apple Intelligence, and the iPhone must run iOS 26.4 or later. Language and regional availability vary. It is not a universal feature that works simply because the headphones carry the AirPods name.
The substantial compromises
At 386.2 g, or 13.6 oz, AirPods Max 2 is much heavier than the roughly 8.96-ounce Sony, the approximately 290-gram Momentum 5, and the 278-gram JBL Tour One M3. That difference may not be obvious in a five-minute demo, but it becomes important after two or three hours.
Apple rates the Max 2 for only 20 hours with ANC enabled. It is also expensive, and RTINGS criticizes the included case’s limited protection. Non-Apple devices can connect, but the strongest ecosystem behavior is not available. Microphone performance also depends heavily on the paired device and improves on Apple hardware. Apple’s claim of up to 1.5 times more ANC is a comparison with the prior AirPods Max, not a direct Sony-versus-Bose measurement.

If you do not require an over-ear design, Apple’s earbuds are a separate, more portable buying decision. Do not buy the Max 2 merely for Apple branding if you primarily use Windows or Android.
Best midrange option: JBL Live 780NC
The JBL Live 780NC is worth investigating when you want strong low-frequency ANC and very long battery life without paying flagship prices. RTINGS measured approximately 60.5 hours of continuous battery life and reports support for LDAC and LC3. Its ANC is effective against airplane, bus, train, and road rumble.
The compromise is noise type. The Live 780NC is weaker at suppressing voices and office chatter than the Sony, and its fit and clamp will not suit everyone. It is therefore a stronger travel-value candidate than a speech-isolation champion. Because its street price changes frequently, verify the current retailer price before comparing it with the $400-plus models.

Choose the JBL Tour One M3 Smart Tx if connecting to an airplane seatback system or another external audio source is central to your travel routine. The $449.95 bundle includes the Smart Tx transmitter, which is designed to connect the headphones to external sources. That is unusually useful when Bluetooth is unavailable or not permitted during parts of a flight.
The Tour One M3 weighs 278 g and offers up to 40 hours with ANC and 70 hours with ANC disabled. It supports Bluetooth 5.3, SBC, AAC, LC3, and LDAC, as well as USB-C lossless audio and Auracast. Its ANC is competitive, but the available comparison does not establish it as clearly superior to Sony or Bose.
Check the exact product listing carefully. JBL sells different configurations, and the transmitter is the reason to buy the Smart Tx bundle rather than an ordinary Tour One M3. An included transmitter can be more useful to a frequent flyer than a modest difference in codec support.
Best inexpensive option: JLab JBuds Lux ANC
Buy the JLab JBuds Lux ANC when you want credible basic ANC for roughly $60–$80 and accept that it will not approach the premium models. JLab lists a $79.99 MSRP, and its U.S. product page showed a $59.99 sale price when checked.

The 235-gram headphones offer hybrid ANC, Bluetooth 5.4, SBC and AAC, multipoint, USB-C audio, app-based control and EQ, and a two-year warranty. JLab rates them for up to 70 hours total playback and 40 hours with ANC enabled.
JLab also claims up to 35 dB of noise reduction. That is a manufacturer figure and cannot be directly compared with Sony’s, Bose’s, Apple’s, or Sennheiser’s claims—or with an independent lab isolation result. In practice, expect useful reduction of steady background rumble and a quieter commute, not premium-level suppression of conversation, sudden sounds, and wind. Tom’s Guide places the JLab in the budget conversation but also reflects its weaker microphones, materials, ANC, and refinement.
This is a sensible student, backup, or first ANC headphone. If a sale brings the Sony WH-CH720N close to the same price, compare the deals: Sony’s budget model is lightweight, has up to 35 hours with ANC, transparency mode, an app, and up to 50 hours with ANC and Bluetooth disabled, but it lacks a carrying case, does not fold, and has ANC well below Sony’s flagship level.
Other specialist option: Sennheiser HDB 630
The Sennheiser HDB 630 is the more audiophile-oriented choice in this group. It weighs 311 g and supports USB-C, analog, and the included BTD 700 USB-C dongle, with up to 24-bit/96 kHz playback through supported connections. It supports aptX Adaptive and aptX HD, plus parametric EQ and crossfeed.
It is not the obvious purchase for someone whose only goal is maximum ANC or minimum weight. Its included dongle is particularly valuable for compatible USB-C computers and devices, and its wired features make it attractive for serious desktop listening. Check the current retailer price before choosing it over the Momentum 5 or a flagship ANC model.
Sony versus Bose: which should you buy?
Choose Sony if:
- You want the strongest measured broad-spectrum isolation.
- Office chatter, keyboards, voices, and revving vehicles matter as much as engine rumble.
- You need strong microphone performance and reliable multipoint.
- You use LDAC or LC3 and want extensive app-based sound controls.
- The Sony earcups fit your ears without a glasses-related leak.
Choose Bose if:
- You prioritize all-day comfort and roomier earcups.
- You wear glasses or dislike shallow ear pads.
- Airplane travel is the main use and the Bose seal is better on your head.
- You value a natural-sounding transparency mode for announcements and conversations.
- You prefer Bose’s physical controls and listening modes, despite some criticism of its touch controls.
If both fit equally well and maximum measured isolation is your deciding factor, buy the Sony. If the Bose is clearly more comfortable or seals better, buy the Bose; fit can reverse the practical ranking.

What “best ANC” means in different environments
Airplanes, buses, and trains: low-frequency rumble
ANC is most consistently effective against continuous, low-frequency sound: airplane engines, train vibration, bus tires, road noise, and HVAC systems. Premium Sony, Bose, Apple, JBL, and Sennheiser models all perform strongly here. Battery life with ANC enabled matters more than a headline ANC-off figure on a long trip.
Offices and cafés: voices and keyboards
Speech and keyboard clicks occupy more of the midrange, where the electronic cancellation system and the physical pad seal work together. RTINGS specifically reports that the XM6 improves over the XM5 at midrange noise, including voices, revved cars, and keyboards. The JBL Live 780NC is a reasonable midrange value but is weaker against speech.
Fans, hiss, and high-frequency noise
Air-conditioning hiss, brakes, electronic whines, and some higher-frequency sounds depend heavily on passive isolation. A technically strong ANC system can underperform if glasses temples, hair, a hat, earrings, or facial shape create a gap. Pad depth and the internal earcup opening matter as much as the processor.
Wind and sudden sounds
Wind can create turbulence or microphone noise, especially while walking near traffic or on a train platform. Sennheiser provides an Anti-Wind Mode on the Momentum 5, but no model guarantees a clean outdoor result in every gust. Sudden claps, alarms, construction impacts, nearby bangs, and individual voices may remain audible because ANC is best at predictable, continuous noise.
Fit and comfort matter more than a small ranking difference
The best ANC hardware cannot compensate for a poor seal. Earcup depth, clamp pressure, head size, glasses, hair, hats, earrings, facial structure, and heat buildup all affect the result. None of these over-ear models should be treated as a secure sports headphone; RTINGS reports that both the Sony and Bose can slip during vigorous movement, and the Momentum 5 is not intended for excessive sweat.
Use this test when buying from a retailer with a suitable return policy:

- Put the headphones on exactly as you normally will, including glasses, a hat, or long hair if applicable.
- Move each earcup slightly up, down, forward, and backward.
- Listen for changes in low-frequency rumble and the track’s bass. A large change indicates an unstable seal.
- Turn your head, talk, and walk around. The pads should remain sealed without excessive clamp pressure.
- Wear them for at least an hour. Check for hot spots, ear contact with the inside of the cup, jaw pressure, and headband fatigue.
- Reject any model whose isolation changes dramatically with minor movement, even if its published ranking is excellent.
Bose is the safer first try for people who dislike shallow pads. Sony is lighter than AirPods Max 2 and is comfortable for many users, but its shallow cups make fit more individual. AirPods Max 2’s 386.2 g weight is a practical specification, not merely a number to ignore after a store demonstration.
Battery life: compare ANC-on numbers
Manufacturers test at different volumes, codecs, temperatures, firmware versions, and feature settings. Multipoint, calls, high volume, USB transmitters, and spatial or immersive audio can reduce runtime. Use ANC-on figures when comparing travel headphones:
| Model | ANC enabled | ANC disabled or alternate mode | Battery ownership note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Up to 30 hours claimed; 31.75 hours measured by RTINGS | Up to 40 hours | Standard rechargeable battery; update firmware before testing |
| Bose QC Ultra 2 | Up to 30 hours; about 23 hours with Immersive Audio according to Bose’s product information | Mode-dependent | Immersive Audio is the important runtime trade-off |
| Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 | Up to 57 hours | Not the headline comparison | User-replaceable 700 mAh battery; 10-minute charge provides up to seven hours |
| AirPods Max 2 | Up to 20 hours | Not the relevant Apple comparison | Cushions are replaceable; Apple does not list a user-replaceable battery |
| JBL Tour One M3 Smart Tx | Up to 40 hours | Up to 70 hours | Transmitter use and other features can change practical runtime |
| JLab JBuds Lux ANC | Up to 40 hours | Up to 70 hours total playback | Manufacturer claim; two-year warranty |
| JBL Live 780NC | About 60.5 hours measured by RTINGS | Not needed for the value comparison | Verify the current model and retailer price |
Battery aging is also part of value. The Momentum 5’s user-replaceable battery is a major advantage for long-term ownership. Apple lists replaceable cushions for AirPods Max 2 but not a user-replaceable battery. Bose sells replacement ear cushions for the QC Ultra 2. Replacement pads can restore a seal, but they do not make a non-replaceable battery replaceable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sound quality, EQ, and codecs
ANC quality and sound quality are separate judgments. A headphone can make a plane quiet without being the best choice for music.
- Sony WH-1000XM6: Warm default tuning, strong detail, broad app functionality, and a graphic EQ. The bass emphasis may bleed into the mids in dense mixes, but EQ can address that preference.
- Bose QC Ultra 2: Rich and bass-forward by default, with app EQ adjustment. Tom’s Guide preferred reducing the bass and found the ANC stronger than the default sound balance.
- Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5: The strongest candidate for listeners who want musical detail, codec support, an eight-band EQ, and long-term sound personalization rather than the absolute best ANC.
- AirPods Max 2: Polished Apple-oriented sound with spatial audio, Adaptive Audio, and USB-C lossless audio on compatible devices.
LDAC, aptX Lossless, USB-C lossless, and other codec labels do not automatically make one system sound better. The source device must support the codec, the app and operating system must permit it, and the connection must remain stable. A listener may not hear a meaningful difference, particularly in a noisy environment. Choose these features because they fit your devices and listening habits, not because the name alone guarantees better sound.
Calls, multipoint, and wired use
Do not infer microphone quality from music performance or price. The useful questions are whether your voice remains clear in a quiet room, how the microphones handle wind, whether traffic and café noise are suppressed, and whether the headset behaves differently on an iPhone, Android phone, Mac, and Windows laptop.

- Powerful Bass & Crystal-Clear Calls: Precision-tuned drivers deliver deep, punchy bass for an immersive listening experience. The built-in high-sensitivity microphone, enhanced by wind resistance and AI clarity, ensures professional-grade call quality—perfect for music lovers and busy professionals alike
RTINGS reports particularly strong microphone performance from the Sony. Bose provides decent voice capture but does not remove every background sound. AirPods Max 2’s microphone results depend strongly on the paired device and are best suited to Apple hardware. Test Teams, Zoom, FaceTime, and ordinary phone calls on the devices you actually use.
Multipoint is useful but not magic. A headset may switch unexpectedly to a sleeping laptop, give a call priority over music, or fail to reconnect after sleep. Confirm that a model supports genuine simultaneous connections rather than merely remembering multiple devices. Sony and Bose support multipoint; the Momentum 5 also supports multipoint.
Wired behavior varies:
- Sony: Analog wired operation, Bluetooth multipoint, LDAC, LC3, and AAC.
- Bose QC Ultra 2: Bluetooth multipoint, USB-C audio, and analog audio.
- Momentum 5: USB-C audio, analog audio, multipoint, and aptX Lossless.
- AirPods Max 2: USB-C lossless and low-latency audio on compatible Apple hardware.
- JBL Tour One M3 Smart Tx: The transmitter is the standout travel feature for external audio systems.
USB-C audio is not the same as USB-C charging. A USB-C cable transmits audio only when both the source and the headphone support the required audio mode. Analog cables, USB-C audio, and Bluetooth can also have different microphone behavior. Several premium models lose microphone functionality or behave differently when wired, so check the specific connection before using one for gaming or video calls.
Travel details that are easy to miss
Airline entertainment systems commonly require a 3.5 mm connection or a transmitter. Bluetooth may be unavailable or prohibited during parts of a flight. The JBL Tour One M3 Smart Tx is unusually well suited to this scenario because its transmitter is designed to connect to external sources.
An included airplane adapter or dongle can matter more than a codec on a specification sheet. Sennheiser includes an airplane adapter with the HDB 630, while contents vary by model and bundle. Confirm exactly what is in the box before buying, especially with the JBL Tour One M3, whose transmitter version is distinct from other configurations.
How to set up new ANC headphones
- Charge the headphones fully.
- Install the current manufacturer app: Sony Sound Connect, the Bose app, Sennheiser Smart Control Plus, JBL Headphones, or the JLab app. AirPods Max 2 is managed primarily through Apple device settings.
- Install firmware updates before judging ANC, battery life, calls, or connection stability.
- Select the maximum-isolation mode: Sony Noise Canceling, Bose Quiet, or ANC on AirPods Max 2. Do not compare Ambient Sound, Aware, Immersion, or Transparency modes as if they were maximum ANC.
- Fit the earcups carefully and repeat the test with your normal glasses, hair, or hat.
- Disable spatial or immersive audio while comparing battery life and ANC unless that is how you intend to use the headphones.
- Set up multipoint one device at a time and check which device takes priority when a call arrives.
If the ANC seems weak
Check these causes in order:
- Seal: Reposition the cups and check for gaps around glasses, hair, hats, or earrings.
- Listening mode: Make sure the headphones are not in transparency, Aware, Ambient Sound, or an immersive mode with different processing.
- Wind: Try an anti-wind or wind-reduction mode outdoors. Wind turbulence can sound like poor ANC.
- Firmware and app: Update the headphones and restart the connection.
- Microphones and pads: Check for blocked ANC microphone openings, damaged pads, or a pad that has flattened enough to leak.
- Expectations: ANC is not designed to erase every voice, alarm, impact, or sudden sound.
For Bose specifically, unexpectedly short battery life may indicate that Immersive Audio is enabled. Bose recommends checking that setting and installing updates through the Bose app or updater; its support guidance covers that troubleshooting path.

ANC is not hearing protection
Ordinary consumer ANC headphones are not automatically hearing-protection devices. ANC can make a plane or office feel quieter, which may reduce the temptation to turn up music, but it does not mean the headphones are safe around power tools, firearms, industrial machinery, concerts, or other hazardous noise.
OSHA says consumer ANC headphones should not replace laboratory-tested hearing-protection devices unless the product is designed and labeled for that purpose. CDC/NIOSH advises that ANC should not be considered hearing protection unless the device carries an appropriate Noise Reduction Rating. Use properly rated earplugs, earmuffs, or another suitable hearing-protection system where required, and follow applicable workplace guidance.
A product to watch, not buy on untested claims yet
Bose has announced a non-Ultra QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) model. As of August 9, 2026, coverage reported preorders and an August 13 shipping date, but final U.S. pricing and independent testing should be verified after launch. It is a watchlist product, not a recommendation in this guide. See the reports from What Hi-Fi? and TechRadar, then wait for independent measurements and actual availability.
Buying checklist
- Confirm that you want over-ear headphones rather than earbuds.
- Try the fit with your normal glasses, hairstyle, hat, or earrings.
- Use a retailer with a practical return policy.
- Verify the exact bundle, especially whether a transmitter or airplane adapter is included.
- Compare ANC with the same noise, music, and volume—not different demonstrations.
- Use ANC-on battery figures, and account for spatial or immersive audio.
- Test calls on the phone and laptop you actually use.
- Check whether USB-C audio, analog audio, or a low-latency dongle is necessary.
- Investigate replacement cushions, battery service, and warranty coverage.
- Do not treat a manufacturer’s decibel or multiplier claim as a cross-brand laboratory result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Sony WH-1000XM6 better than the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)?
There is no universal answer. RTINGS and SoundGuys give Sony a small edge in measured or raw ANC, while Tom’s Guide prefers Bose after hands-on testing. Choose Sony for broad-spectrum isolation, calls, multipoint, and app control; choose Bose if its roomier earcups seal better or feel more comfortable for several hours.

Do noise-canceling headphones block voices?
They can reduce voices, but no consumer ANC headphone reliably erases all speech. Voices are midrange sounds, and performance depends on the ANC system, earcup seal, glasses, hair, head shape, and distance from the speaker. Sony’s XM6 has particularly strong independent midrange results, while the JBL Live 780NC is less effective against chatter than against low-frequency rumble.
Can I use ANC headphones on an airplane?
Yes. ANC is especially useful against continuous engine rumble. For the seatback entertainment system, you may need a 3.5 mm cable, airplane adapter, or transmitter because Bluetooth may be unavailable or restricted. The JBL Tour One M3 Smart Tx is the most travel-specific option here because its bundle includes a transmitter intended for external audio sources.
Are ANC headphones safe enough to use as hearing protection?
No—not automatically. Ordinary consumer ANC headphones should not replace properly rated hearing-protection devices. Around hazardous noise, use earplugs, earmuffs, or another product designed and labeled for hearing protection with an appropriate Noise Reduction Rating.
Which noise-canceling headphones have the longest battery life?
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 has the longest stated ANC-on runtime in this guide at up to 57 hours and includes a user-replaceable battery. RTINGS measured about 60.5 hours for the JBL Live 780NC, but battery-test conditions differ. The Sony is rated for 30 hours with ANC, Bose for up to 30 hours in its standard mode, JBL Tour One M3 for up to 40 hours, JLab JBuds Lux ANC for up to 40 hours, and AirPods Max 2 for up to 20 hours.

Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6 for the best default combination of measured ANC, office and travel performance, calls, multipoint, and battery life. Buy the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if the fit is more comfortable or seals better, particularly with glasses or larger ears. Buy the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 for 57-hour ANC battery life, sound customization, and a user-replaceable battery. Buy AirPods Max 2 only when Apple ecosystem features justify its weight, price, and 20-hour battery. For a genuinely inexpensive option, the JLab JBuds Lux ANC is the sensible pick near $60–$80—as long as your expectations remain well below flagship ANC.
