For most people, the Withings Body Smart is the best-balanced smart scale: it combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth syncing, household features, and body-composition estimates at a lower price than Withings’ premium models. Choose the Withings Body Comp if you specifically want its additional health insights, Garmin Index S2 if you use Garmin Connect, or a Renpho model for a lower-cost option. Treat body-composition results as estimates for tracking trends, not clinical measurements.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Withings Body Smart | Most people | $129.95 US list price | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, body-composition estimates, standing heart rate, household features | Composition results are estimates; advanced insights may require a higher-tier model. |

| Garmin Index S2 | Garmin Connect users | Check current local seller | Wi-Fi syncing and Garmin Connect integration | Less compelling outside the Garmin ecosystem. |
| Renpho Smart Body Fat Scale | Budget weight and trend tracking | Check current model and local price | Low-cost option with app-based BIA estimates | Basic models may be Bluetooth-only, show additional metrics in the app, and have household-account limitations. |

Best smart scale for most people: Withings Body Smart
Withings Body Smart is the sensible default for buyers who want more than a basic weight record without paying for a flagship scale. Withings lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth syncing, automatic user recognition, a display, standing heart rate, and body-composition estimates. Its US list price in the research snapshot was $129.95.
Wi-Fi can sync readings without requiring your phone to be beside the scale, while Bluetooth supports app-connected use. Body Smart covers the core features many households want; users who mainly need weight trends can also spend less on a basic connected scale.

Choose it for convenient weight tracking and repeatable trends, not because its body-fat percentage is an exact measurement. More metrics do not necessarily mean more useful or more accurate information.
Best premium mainstream scale: Withings Body Comp
Withings Body Comp is the stronger premium mainstream choice for people who specifically want its additional health insights. Withings listed it at $229.95 in the US research snapshot and positions it above Body Smart with features including vascular age, body-composition estimates, standing heart rate, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth syncing.
It is a poor value if you only want to log weight or expect additional metrics to be laboratory-grade measurements. WIRED also names Body Comp its overall pick, while other reviewers emphasize different priorities; smart-scale rankings depend partly on what a buyer values.
Best for Garmin users: Garmin Index S2
Garmin Index S2 makes the most sense when Garmin Connect is already your main fitness and health dashboard. Its key advantage is ecosystem fit: weight and body-composition trends can live alongside other Garmin data. It is not an obvious hardware-value winner for every household.

Best budget option: Renpho Smart Body Fat Scale
A basic Renpho Smart Body Fat Scale can suit buyers who want inexpensive connected weighing and rough body-composition trends. Tom’s Guide reports that the reviewed basic model tracks 13 metrics through BIA, displays weight on the scale, and puts additional metrics in its app. The reviewed configuration uses Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi and may require users to share an app login.
Confirm the exact model before buying: features, connectivity, integrations, and account behavior can differ across Renpho products. A long metric list is not proof of accuracy, and a Bluetooth-only scale may require your phone nearby to sync.
Wyze Scale X and Etekcity models are other budget candidates cited in review coverage. Check the current model and app details rather than assuming every version has the same capabilities.
When a segmental or high-end scale is worth considering
Withings BodyFit is a more expensive option for buyers interested in handle-based, six-zone composition estimates. Withings listed it at $279.95 in the US research snapshot. Segmental output may be useful to people who will follow those trends consistently, but additional contact points do not establish precise or clinical readings for an individual.
Withings lists Body Scan at $499.95 and BodyScan 2 at $599.95 in the US. These models add segmental analysis and health-oriented features, which may include ECG-related or other cardiovascular insights depending on model and market. Verify current feature availability, regulatory status, and any subscription requirements where you live. A screening feature or wellness score is not a diagnosis, and these products should not replace clinical care.

What a smart scale measures
Weight is the scale’s direct measurement. Some models also report standing heart rate. Most other outputs—such as body-fat percentage, muscle mass, body water, bone mass, visceral-fat ratings, basal metabolic rate, metabolic age, or vascular age—are estimates or calculated scores.
Many scales use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA): the device sends a very small electrical current through the body, measures impedance, then combines that signal with profile information such as height, age, and sex. A scale may calculate many metrics from the same signal; a longer list does not mean it independently measures each one.
Foot-to-foot, handle-based, multifrequency, and segmental designs use different measurement approaches. Their results can differ, and numbers from different brands should not be treated as interchangeable. Manufacturer accuracy claims are not independent proof that every metric matches a reference method.
How accurate are smart scales?
Weight readings are generally more dependable for routine home tracking than body-composition estimates. WIRED reports that the scales it tested produced weight readings within a relatively narrow range, but that does not establish clinical accuracy for every model or composition metric. Body-fat and muscle estimates can vary with hydration, food, exercise, time of day, and device algorithms.
Use the same scale under similar conditions and look at weekly or multi-week trends. Do not treat a one-day change as proof that you gained fat or lost muscle, and do not use a consumer scale as a substitute for DEXA or clinical assessment.

How to get readings that are worth comparing
- Place the scale on a hard, level floor and avoid moving it between readings.
- Weigh at approximately the same time of day, ideally before eating or exercising when practical.
- Keep hydration, food, exercise, clothing, and bathroom timing as consistent as possible.
- Use bare, dry feet if the scale’s instructions require direct electrode contact, and follow its safety instructions.
- Review weekly or multi-week trends rather than reacting to one composition reading.
- Use one device consistently; do not compare percentages from different brands as if they were equivalent.
How to choose a smart scale
- Start with your goal. If you mainly want weight history, a lower-cost connected model may be enough. Pay more only for features you expect to use.
- Match your ecosystem. Garmin users may prefer Index S2. Check desired Apple Health, Google Health Connect, Fitbit, or other integrations for the exact model and app version.
- Check household use. Review user recognition, account separation, and whether family members need separate app accounts.
- Compare syncing and display. Wi-Fi can sync without a nearby phone; Bluetooth may require the app or phone nearby. Some scales show only weight on the device.
- Check the full cost. Confirm live price and whether advanced insights require a subscription.
- Be skeptical of metric counts. More reported numbers do not automatically mean more accurate or actionable information.
Health and safety boundaries
Read the exact current manual for your model before using BIA features during pregnancy, with an implanted device or pacemaker, for children, or with a medical condition. Instructions may vary by model and region. Consumer-scale results are not diagnoses and should not guide treatment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are smart-scale body-composition readings accurate?
Weight is generally more dependable than body-fat, muscle, water, or similar estimates. Treat BIA outputs as trends on the same device under similar conditions, not exact clinical measurements.
Which smart scale is best for most people?
Withings Body Smart is the dossier’s best-balanced default for most buyers. Body Comp is a premium option for people who specifically want its additional health insights, while a basic Renpho model can fit a tighter budget.
Is the Withings Body Comp worth the extra cost?
It may be worth considering if you will use its additional health insights, such as vascular-age information. If you mainly want weight tracking, Body Smart or a lower-cost scale is likely a better fit.

Should Garmin users buy the Index S2?
It is a logical option if Garmin Connect is already your main health and fitness dashboard. Its clearest advantage is integration, so verify that it supports the data and household workflow you want.
Is a handle-based scale more accurate than a foot-only scale?
Not necessarily. Handle-based and segmental designs provide a different measurement approach and additional estimates, but that alone does not prove individual clinical accuracy.
How often should I weigh myself?
Choose a schedule you can follow consistently. Compare readings taken under similar conditions and focus on the trend over weeks rather than the meaning of any single result.
The Bottom Line
Choose a smart scale for consistent weight records, useful syncing, and long-term trends—not for a supposedly exact body-fat number. Withings Body Smart is the best-balanced choice for most people, Body Comp suits buyers who want additional health insights, Garmin Index S2 fits Garmin users, and Renpho offers a budget route.
