Why the watches fit the 2025 Met Gala
The Gala took place on May 5, 2025. Its dress code, “Tailored for You,” accompanied the Costume Institute exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The Met described the code as a nod to the exhibition’s focus on suiting and menswear, while leaving room for creative interpretation. That made watches an especially varied part of the red-carpet styling: some were discreet accents, while others brought precious metals, color, or jewelry-like sparkle to the outfit.

Rocky’s Bulgari was the most technically arresting pick. Time+Tide reported a thickness of 1.70 mm and called it, at the time of its May 2025 report, the world’s thinnest production mechanical watch and thinnest COSC-certified chronometer. Walton Goggins: Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Complete Calendar Openface
Goggins’s reported watch was a platinum limited edition with a complete-calendar display. The open design puts the movement and calendar elements on show, making it a more visually intricate choice than a restrained dress watch. Angela Bassett: Glashütte Original Serenade Luna
Bassett’s Serenade Luna combined mother-of-pearl, diamonds, and a moonphase display. Pusha T: Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Rainbow”

Vintage pieces and watch brooches broaden the idea of what can count as a red-carpet watch.
Outfit fit matters as much as complication. A watch can echo tailoring through a clean case and restrained palette, or deliberately interrupt it with color, diamonds, or an unconventional display. The strongest choices here show that a Met Gala watch need not be the most complicated or expensive-looking: it needs a clear visual relationship to the wearer’s look.
