The Citizen Chronomaster’s central appeal is unusually precise quartz timekeeping without giving up the convenience of light-powered operation. Current The CITIZEN models using the A060 movement are rated by Citizen at ±5 seconds per year. For collectors, that figure is a compelling starting point—not a complete verdict on the watch or a promise that every example will behave identically in every climate.
What makes the Citizen Chronomaster a high-accuracy quartz watch?
In collector conversation, HAQ means high-accuracy quartz. It is a descriptive category, not one universal certification. The useful, specific claim here is that Citizen rates relevant current A060 Eco-Drive models at ±5 seconds per year. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independently measured result.
Citizen’s account of the precision system focuses on temperature, which affects a quartz oscillator’s frequency. The company says the watch monitors and adjusts for its internal temperature once per minute—1,440 measurements a day—to compensate for frequency changes. Citizen also describes observing crystals for six months before selecting those used in its ±5-second models. These are the maker’s descriptions of its engineering process, rather than independent assessments.
Citizen describes the temperature adjustment in its official precision explanation: “This function automatically monitors and adjusts for the watch’s internal temperature once per minute for a total of 1,440 measurements per day.”

How accurate is The Citizen A060 in everyday use?
The ±5-second figure is an annual rating, not a fixed allowance that can be divided into a daily or monthly limit. Citizen’s A010 support guidance says the rating means the watch may gain or lose up to five seconds against correct time over a year, under stated operating conditions. Those conditions are normal ambient temperatures of +5°C to +40°C, wearing the watch for about 12 hours a day, and keeping it sufficiently charged so the insufficient-charge warning does not activate.
Shorter intervals can look less even. Citizen says seasonal temperature changes can lead to a two-second variation over 30 days while the watch still meets its yearly rating. Its A010 accuracy guidance explicitly cautions: “It is not correct to convert yearly time accuracy into monthly or daily one as follows:” In other words, the annual specification should not be treated as a promise of a particular number of seconds gained or lost each month.

The A010 page explains the maker’s accuracy guidance and conditions; it is not a report of independent testing of every A060 watch. Individual conditions and wearing patterns matter, and no owner-performance dataset is established here.
What does the A060 offer beyond accuracy?
A060 pairs its accuracy rating with Eco-Drive light-powered operation and practical timekeeping functions. Citizen’s global lineup lists a power reserve indicator and an independently adjustable hour hand, useful when changing time zones without resetting the minute hand. Depending on the reference, it also lists functions such as a perpetual calendar, shock counteraction, automatic hand correction and magnetic resistance.

Specifications differ across the lineup. Citizen lists some A060 models with a 38.3 mm case and dual-sphere glass with anti-reflective coating; other listed references measure 40 mm, and some have luminous hands and indexes. For listed models, Citizen gives seven months of running time, extending to up to 1.5 years when the power-save function is used, along with 10 ATM water resistance. Check the exact reference: these details should not be assumed to apply to every Chronomaster or historical model.
The US page for AQ4106-00B describes a 38.3 mm A060 Eco-Drive with perpetual calendar, power reserve indicator, energy-saving functions, shock detection, automatic hand-position adjustment and time-difference correction. Citizen described that release as limited to 350 unnumbered pieces worldwide; the US product page showed it sold out when accessed. That page listed a five-year limited warranty, but availability and warranty terms vary by region and date.

Why does the ±5-second rating appeal to collectors?
The attraction is not simply that quartz can be accurate. It is the combination of a clearly stated annual target, Citizen’s temperature-compensation approach, and a light-powered movement with useful everyday functions. For a collector who values low timekeeping deviation but prefers not to reset a watch frequently, that combination offers a distinctive alternative to both ordinary quartz and mechanical watches.

- Polished silver-tone watch featuring black dial with stick indices, luminous hands, and day/date window
- 39 mm stainless steel case with mineral dial window
- Japanese quartz movement with analog display
- Croco-embossed leather band with buckle closure
- Water resistant to 30 m (99 ft): In general, withstands splashes or brief immersion in water, but not suitable for swimming
The rating also gives a collector a more meaningful specification to evaluate than a vague claim of precision. Its limits matter, though: it describes a yearly result under the manufacturer’s conditions, not flawless synchronization, a guaranteed result in every environment or the watch’s performance over a shorter period.

Accuracy is one part of a buying decision. Compare the exact reference’s dimensions and proportions, dial and finishing, case and bracelet materials, legibility, water resistance, functions, service access, regional availability and price. A 38.3 mm model and a 40 mm model may wear differently; the shared A060 label does not make their design or fit interchangeable.
- Accuracy basis: confirm the model’s stated annual rating and the conditions attached to it. Distinguish a watch that keeps time autonomously from one that periodically synchronizes by radio or GPS.
- Power and upkeep: consider light exposure and charging behavior, and check the manufacturer’s service guidance for the reference.
- Functions: decide whether features such as an independently adjustable hour hand, power reserve indicator or perpetual calendar matter in your use.
- Fit and materials: verify case width, thickness, lug-to-lug measurement where available, case and bracelet materials, and water resistance on the specific model page.
- Ownership details: confirm current local availability, warranty, authorized service options and price before buying; these can change and are not uniform across markets.
The ±5-second rating can make a Chronomaster compelling, but it cannot establish whether a particular dial, case, fit or price is right for you. Collector value remains a judgment about the whole reference, not a score produced by accuracy alone.
