Which of the four should you choose?
There is no universal winner here: the watches suit different preferences for design, display, movement, and wearing style. Start with the kind of watch you want to live with, then check the exact model’s dimensions, configuration, water-resistance rating, and current price.
Choose the Baltic for a traditional mechanical watch
The beige Hermétique Tourer is the pick for someone who wants an automatic watch with a classic, vintage-influenced look. De Groot highlights its 1940s-inspired case, three-dimensional luminous indexes, and a steel ring that separates sections of the dial. He liked how it worked on either the beige Tropic-style rubber strap or the beads-of-rice bracelet, and wrote, “There are very few brands that get it so right at this price point.” That is his personal assessment, not the result of a controlled comparison.

Choose the Seiko for solar power and a limited-edition Speedtimer
The SSC937 is the solar-powered option. De Groot preferred its light-blue dial and brushed stainless-steel bezel to the dark-coated bezels on regular versions. The article describes it as a 39 mm Speedtimer on a steel bracelet and reports a thickness of 13.3 mm. De Groot found it somewhat bulky on his 17 cm wrist, a useful reminder that diameter alone does not determine fit.

Choose the Vero for a more tool-oriented field watch
The yellow Forest Service Edition Hotshot has the most overtly rugged specification set among these four: a 39 mm stainless-steel case with tinted ceramic coating, sapphire crystal, two screw-down crowns, rubberized-steel protective bullhorns, and 150 m water resistance. Its Seiko PX28A Kinetic movement distinguishes it from both the automatic Baltic and solar Seiko.
Rank #3

- 27 millimeter case with acrylic dial window
- Resin band with buckle closure
- Water resistant to 100 meter (330 feet): In general, suitable for swimming and snorkeling, but not diving
De Groot listed it at US$475 and gave an approximate euro equivalent of €444 at the time. The conversion is publication-era only; use a current seller’s price in your currency when comparing it with a €1,000 budget.
Choose the Autodromo for a digital display and distinctive design
The Group C is the digital option. De Groot describes a stainless-steel case around an LCD quartz module, a sapphire display crystal, brushed finishing, and yellow dial and pusher accents. He favored the brushed “naked” steel version, listed at €515 in the article.
Rank #4
- Sport watch with blue dial border, rectangular dial window, perpetual calendar functions, and alarm feature
- 26 mm resin case with mineral dial window
- Quartz movement with digital display
- Ribbed resin band with buckle closure
- Water resistant
What the movement types mean in practice
- Automatic mechanical: The Baltic uses a Miyota 9039 automatic movement. Choose this if you specifically want a traditional mechanical watch rather than an electronically powered display. Automatic watches need to be worn or otherwise kept running; check the maker’s published power-reserve figure for the exact model if how long it runs off-wrist matters to you.
- Solar: The Seiko converts light into electrical power. Consider whether you are comfortable with a watch that needs exposure to light as part of normal use, and consult Seiko’s instructions for charging and storage.
- Kinetic: The Vero’s Seiko PX28A Kinetic movement generates electrical energy from wrist motion. It is distinct from a conventional automatic mechanical movement even though wrist movement is involved.
- Digital quartz: The Autodromo uses an LCD quartz module. Choose it if you want a digital readout rather than conventional watch hands; check the exact model’s instructions for battery and module details.
These technologies are different ways of powering or displaying a watch, not a universal ranking from best to worst. Decide which experience you prefer, then compare the practical details that matter to you.
What to check before buying
- Fit: Compare case diameter and thickness, and if possible try the watch on. The Seiko’s reported 13.3 mm thickness and De Groot’s fit note illustrate why diameter alone is not enough.
- Crystal and case materials: The Vero and Autodromo descriptions specify sapphire crystals. Check the exact listing for the materials and finish of the version you are considering.
- Water resistance: The Vero’s 150 m rating is reported in the 2024 article. Water-resistance markings do not by themselves establish that a watch is suitable for every activity; follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact model and use.
- Configuration: Verify whether the listing includes a strap, bracelet, or both, and whether it is the color and variant described here.
- Price and availability: Prices vary with seller, configuration, availability, and later changes. The 2024 figures are not a current-price guarantee; confirm the exact reference and total cost with the seller.
How to read the €1,000 budget
All four picks were presented below €1,000 in the March 2024 article, but its prices are historical product-specific figures—not market averages or live quotes. In particular, the Vero’s euro figure was an approximate conversion from US$475, while the Baltic estimate depended on a bracelet-and-strap configuration. A later Fratello guide notes that prices can vary with configuration, availability, and price changes; that caution is equally relevant when revisiting this older list. Treat “under €1,000” as the guide’s original framing and verify the current price of the exact watch you intend to buy.
