Michael Stockton’s May 2024 Fratello selection named four watches that approach the €2,500 ceiling in different ways: a Seiko travel watch, a secondhand Ming, a newly launched Oak & Oscar chronograph, and a Longines heritage model that depended on a discount or pre-owned purchase. This is a dated personal shortlist, not a current ranking or price guide; check today’s regional price and availability before buying.
What Mike’s picks offer
Stockton framed his list as a mix of new and secondhand options. The watches are not directly comparable as a ranked set: they prioritize different complications, designs, and buying routes.
| Watch | What stands out | How it fit the budget in May 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Seiko SPB411 Navigator Timer | Automatic movement and dual 24-hour indications; 38.5 mm wide | Reported European retail price of €1,700 |
| Ming 17.09 | Patterned blue or burgundy dial; independently adjustable hour hand; 38 mm case | Secondary-market examples were reported between €2,000 and €2,500 |
| Oak & Oscar Atwood | Manually wound flyback chronograph with column wheel; 39 mm case | Reported launch price of US$2,650, which Stockton approximated as €2,440 |
| Longines Heritage Classic | Sector dial and automatic movement; 38.5 mm case | List price was above €2,500; discounted or pre-owned examples could fall below it |
All prices and availability in this comparison are Stockton’s May 2024 reporting, not current quotes. His observation that this price band felt like “a no man’s land” because brands tend to position above or below it was his opinion, not a market statistic. Read the original Fratello article.
Seiko SPB411 Navigator Timer: the travel-oriented new-retail pick
Stockton described the SPB411 as a 2023 reissue inspired by the collectible Seiko 6117-8000. Its external 24-hour bezel and internal 24-hour hand provide two 24-hour indications. The article does not establish that these are independent time zones, so buyers should consult current Seiko specifications for the exact operating instructions.

The 6R54 automatic movement is listed with 72 hours of power reserve. The case measures 38.5 mm across, 45.2 mm long, and 12.6 mm thick. Seiko made 4,000 examples, according to the article. Stockton said it remained available in most markets at the time and gave a European retail price of €1,700; neither that stock assessment nor that price should be treated as current.
Ming 17.09: a compact, patterned-dial option on the used market
The 17.09 debuted in 2021. Stockton said it was available only on the secondary market when he wrote. He described a polished 38 mm steel case with a 43.9 mm length and blue or burgundy dials featuring a Clous de Paris pattern.
Rank #2
- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Its movement is a Schwarz-Etienne-modified Sellita SW330-2 with an independently adjustable hour hand. Stockton noted reports of early issues with that function, while saying that he and fellow Fratello writer Balazs had not encountered them. That is personal experience, not controlled testing or a guarantee about any individual watch.
Stockton reported seeing examples for €2,000 to €2,500 in May 2024. Treat that as a historical observation, not a live price range. For a secondhand watch, assess the seller, condition, warranty status, and service history before committing.

Oak & Oscar Atwood: the hand-wound flyback chronograph
Introduced the week before Stockton’s article, the Atwood was presented in three colorways. Its manually wound Sellita chronograph movement has a flyback function and column wheel. The case measures 39 mm wide, 46 mm long, and 12.9 mm thick including the crystal; Stockton also praised its bracelet.
The reported launch price was US$2,650. Stockton approximated that as €2,440 in May 2024, but that conversion does not establish a European retail price or landed cost. Exchange rates, taxes, import charges, and current availability all need checking for the buyer’s region.

Longines Heritage Classic: a sector dial if you find the right price
The Heritage Classic debuted in 2019 with a silver sector dial; a black version was added later. Stockton described strap options or a beads-of-rice bracelet, a 38.5 mm case width, 47.6 mm length, and 11 mm thickness. The Longines L893 automatic caliber is listed with 72 hours of power reserve.
The official list price was above €2,500, according to the article. Its place on this shortlist therefore depended on finding a discounted authorized-dealer watch or a secondhand example below the ceiling. Stockton’s discount and resale observations were not independently checked and may no longer apply. Compare warranty, condition, seller reputation, and service history when evaluating a used example.
How to choose among the four
- Choose the Seiko if you want the clearest new-retail and travel-oriented option in Stockton’s list, while verifying its current price and how its 24-hour indications operate.
- Consider the Ming if its compact case and patterned dial appeal to you and you are comfortable searching the secondary market.
- Look at the Atwood if a manual-wind flyback chronograph is the priority; check the full regional cost rather than relying on the article’s euro conversion.
- Consider the Longines if the sector-dial design is the draw and you find an acceptable discounted or pre-owned example.
Stockton’s four recommendations provide different routes toward the same budget, but the budget fit is uneven: one was reported below the ceiling at European retail, one and another relied on used or discounted pricing, and one depended on a historical currency conversion. The May 2024 article does not provide a standardized head-to-head test or current stock information.
