The Best Wireless Headphones for 2026: Bluetooth Options for Every Budget

Sony’s WH-1000XM6 is the best overall wireless headphone for 2026, but Bose wins for ANC and comfort, Sennheiser for sound and battery life, and CMF or JLab for budgets under $100.

For most buyers, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the best wireless headphone overall in 2026. It combines excellent noise cancellation, customizable sound, reliable calls, multipoint Bluetooth, a foldable travel-friendly design, and broad Android support. It is not the universal winner: choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, 2nd Gen for maximum noise blocking and a particularly comfortable fit, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless for sound, battery life, and a replaceable battery, or the CMF Headphone Pro or JLab JBuds Lux ANC if your budget is under $100.

This guide covers Bluetooth over-ear and on-ear headphones sold in the United States, not true wireless earbuds. Prices are US manufacturer list prices unless a dated sale price is stated; availability and prices were checked on August 9, 2026.

Quick recommendations

The right choice depends more on your priorities than on the price tag. A $500 sound-first headphone is not automatically better for an airplane, a Teams call, or an iPhone than a $400 model. Use this shortlist as the starting point:

Model US list price Best for ANC-on battery claim USB-C audio Main trade-off
Sony WH-1000XM6 $459.99 Best overall Up to 30 hours No Glasses can affect the seal and bass; no USB-C audio
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, 2nd Gen $449 ANC and comfort Up to 30 hours; 23 with Immersive Audio Yes, digital audio Less neutral sound; immersive modes reduce battery life
Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless $399.95 Sound, battery, and long-term ownership Up to 57 hours Yes Approximately 290g and not IP-rated
Sennheiser HDB 630 $499.95 Critical listening and wired audio Up to 60 hours total claim Yes, up to 24-bit/96kHz ANC is weaker than Sony or Bose; approximately 311g
Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 Approximately $479 Premium sound and construction Check manufacturer specification Yes Does not fold and is heavier than the Sony
CMF Headphone Pro $99 MSRP; $79 sale checked Aug. 9, 2026 Best budget ANC value Manufacturer highlights 100 hours with ANC off Check product documentation ANC and microphones trail premium models
soundcore Space 2 $129.99 Budget travel and battery life Up to 50 hours Not the main reason to buy Some high-frequency office noise remains audible; no IP rating
JLab JBuds Lux ANC $79.99 MSRP Best all-rounder under $100 Independent test measured 44h 22m Yes Microphone and build refinement are modest
Sony WH-CH720N $179.99 MSRP Lightweight ANC when discounted Up to 35 hours No Only SBC/AAC and a basic-feeling build
Sony WH-CH520 $69.99 MSRP Cheapest credible, lightweight option ANC not available No wired mode On-ear design, no ANC, and limited isolation
Sennheiser ACCENTUM Wireless $189.95 MSRP Mid-price battery value Up to 50 hours Check model-specific connection behavior Less refined sound and calls than pricier options
AirPods Max 2 $549 Apple ecosystem integration Up to 20 hours Yes, lossless and low latency Very heavy at 386.2g and short battery life
JBL Tour One M3 $449.95 Travel features and calls Up to 40 hours Yes; transmitter included Large and relatively heavy

Battery figures are manufacturer maximum claims unless identified as independent testing. Actual runtime changes with volume, codec, ANC, spatial audio, and source device.

Best wireless headphones by use case

Best overall: Sony WH-1000XM6

The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the safest recommendation when one pair must handle commuting, flights, music, podcasts, remote work, and two-device switching. Its strengths overlap unusually well: strong full-range ANC, good call performance, multipoint, an effective companion app with EQ, a foldable design, and support for SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3, up to 30 hours with ANC enabled, up to 40 hours with ANC disabled, a 3.5mm input, and an approximate 254g weight in its official specifications.

Independent coverage broadly supports this as the all-round pick. RTINGS places the XM6 near the top for ANC, customization, and multipoint, while SoundGuys and What Hi-Fi? also select it as an overall recommendation. RTINGS’ continuous testing measured nearly 32 hours of ANC-on playback, although that result should not be treated as a guarantee for every phone, codec, or volume level.

Buy it if: you want one polished pair and value ANC, calls, app controls, and travel convenience together.

Skip it if: USB-C audio is essential, you want the longest possible battery life, or your glasses consistently break the ear-pad seal. RTINGS specifically notes that glasses can reduce the XM6’s seal and bass response. Try it with your usual frames before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best ANC and comfort: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, 2nd Gen

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, 2nd Gen is the better choice when noise blocking and long-wear comfort matter more than neutral tuning. Bose’s ANC is especially persuasive on planes, trains, buses, and HVAC rumble. What Hi-Fi? gives Bose a slight edge for outright noise cancellation, while the wider test landscape is more divided: RTINGS finds the Sony slightly stronger overall in isolation but the Bose more comfortable and less sensitive to fit issues.

The second-generation Ultra supports multipoint and USB-C digital audio at 16-bit/44.1 or 48kHz. Bose rates it for up to 30 hours with ANC and Immersive Audio disabled, 23 hours with both enabled, and 45 hours with ANC disabled. The headphones weigh approximately 250g, slightly less than the Sony.

The caveat is that the Bose tuning is more spacious and engaging than strictly neutral. That can be enjoyable for travel and general listening, but listeners seeking a faithful, analytical presentation should consider the Sennheiser HDB 630 instead.

Best balance of sound, battery, and longevity: Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless occupies the most convincing middle ground in the premium tier. Its sound is more detailed and musically focused than the typical ANC travel headphone, while adaptive ANC, multipoint, USB-C audio, analog listening, Dolby Atmos support, and an eight-band EQ keep it practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The headline feature is its replaceable battery. Sennheiser claims up to 57 hours with ANC enabled, and a 10-minute charge can provide up to seven hours of playback. That is more significant for ownership over several years than a small difference in first-day battery testing: a replaceable battery can extend the useful life of the headphone instead of making the entire unit disposable when its internal cell eventually deteriorates.

The compromises are weight and weather protection. At approximately 290g, the Momentum 5 is substantially heavier than the Sony CH720N and heavier than the Sony XM6 or Bose Ultra 2. It is also not IP-rated. That does not mean a brief encounter with light rain guarantees failure, but it is not certified as sweat- or water-resistant. Its default sound is warmer and more mainstream than the neutral HDB 630.

Best sound-first wireless headphone: Sennheiser HDB 630

If sound quality comes before maximum ANC, the Sennheiser HDB 630 is the specialist pick. RTINGS identifies it as a best-sounding wireless model, and What Hi-Fi? rates its outright sound above the Sony XM6. Its neutral, audiophile-oriented presentation, parametric EQ, and crossfeed controls make it more suitable for critical listening than a bass-forward travel model.

It is also unusually flexible for wired use. The HDB 630 includes Sennheiser’s BTD 700 USB-C Bluetooth dongle, supports USB-C and 3.5mm listening, and is specified for up to 24-bit/96kHz through USB-C, analog input, or the included dongle. Sennheiser rates battery operation at up to 60 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy it expecting Sony- or Bose-level silence. Its ANC is effective, but current testing places it below those models. At approximately 311g, it is also the heaviest major recommendation here. It makes most sense for a listener who will use the USB-C or analog connection and who values sound quality more than the lightest travel setup.

Best premium sound alternative: Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3

The Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 is a premium alternative at approximately $479. It targets buyers who want polished construction and a full-bodied, high-quality presentation rather than the strongest possible ANC. It supports aptX Lossless, USB-C audio, and multipoint.

The design is less travel-friendly than Sony’s because it does not fold, and it is heavier. Choose it for its sound and materials, not because its price implies better noise cancellation or calls.

Best for an iPhone-first household: AirPods Max 2

The AirPods Max 2 is the ecosystem choice, not the value or battery choice. At $549 and 386.2g, it is considerably heavier than the other premium recommendations. Apple rates it for up to 20 hours with ANC enabled; a five-minute charge provides approximately 1.5 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you receive in return is unusually deep Apple integration, including the H2 chip, Conversation Awareness, Adaptive Audio, Personalized Spatial Audio, and USB-C lossless and low-latency audio. Apple’s listed features and Live Translation capabilities depend on compatible Apple hardware and software. Android phones can use the headphones as standard Bluetooth headphones, but they should not be expected to provide the same app and ecosystem functionality. Tom’s Guide specifically cautions Android buyers about the reduced functionality.

Choose AirPods Max 2 only if automatic Apple-device integration, spatial audio, and Apple-specific controls are worth accepting the weight and 20-hour battery. For an iPhone owner who wants better value, longer runtime, or a lighter travel headphone, the Sony XM6 and Bose Ultra 2 are more balanced.

Best for travel features and calls: JBL Tour One M3

The JBL Tour One M3 is a credible alternative to Sony and Bose for frequent travelers and remote workers. It offers USB lossless audio, an included SMART Tx transmitter, LDAC, and a claimed 70 hours with ANC off or 40 hours with ANC on. Current lab coverage also places it among the stronger call-focused choices.

  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: With up to 50-hour battery life and quick charging, you’ll have enough power for multi-day road trips and long festival weekends.(USB Type-C Cable included)
  • HIGH QUALITY SOUND: Great sound quality customizable to your music preference with EQ Custom on the Sony | Headphones Connect App.
  • LIGHT & COMFORTABLE: The lightweight build and swivel earcups gently slip on and off, while the adjustable headband, cushion and soft ear pads give you all-day comfort.
  • CRYSTAL CLEAR CALLS: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.
  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

The transmitter is useful when a source does not offer convenient Bluetooth audio, but it adds another accessory to carry. The JBL is also relatively large and heavy. It is a feature-rich alternative, not an automatic upgrade over the XM6 or Bose Ultra 2.

Best budget ANC: CMF Headphone Pro

At a $99 MSRP, the CMF Headphone Pro is one of the strongest value options for buyers who specifically want ANC below $100. The official US page showed a temporary $79 price on August 9, 2026. It supports LDAC and multipoint, offers personalized sound through Audiodo, and has interchangeable ear cushions. CMF advertises up to 100 hours with ANC off.

That battery number is a manufacturer claim and should not be compared directly with an ANC-on test from another brand. CMF also advertises cancellation of up to 99% of noise; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent full-range measurement. RTINGS finds the ANC capable for the price but below premium models.

Buy it if: you want the most features possible around $80–$100 and primarily need to reduce engine rumble, HVAC, or general background noise.

Skip it if: your priority is clear calls near traffic, high-frequency office noise, or a refined premium fit. In those cases, moving up to the soundcore Space 2, Sony CH720N on sale, or a premium Sony/Bose model is more meaningful than chasing a codec number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best budget travel headphone: soundcore Space 2

The soundcore Space 2 costs $129.99 and is a strong budget travel recommendation. It claims up to 50 hours with ANC and 70 hours without ANC, supports LDAC and multipoint, includes a 3.5mm input, uses physical buttons, and weighs approximately 264g. Five minutes of charging is claimed to provide four hours of playback.

Its ANC is useful for low-frequency travel noise and the fit is generally comfortable in independent coverage, but Tom’s Guide found that some higher-frequency office noise remained audible with ANC enabled. The Space 2 has no IP rating, so it should not be selected as a workout or rain headphone. Its advertised Bluetooth 6.1 is also not a sound-quality guarantee; Bluetooth version is only one part of the connection.

Best under $100 overall: JLab JBuds Lux ANC

The JLab JBuds Lux ANC is the better pick for buyers who want an affordable over-ear headphone with ANC, transparency mode, physical controls, folding portability, app-based EQ, Google Fast Pair, and USB-C audio. Its $79.99 MSRP makes it a credible all-rounder rather than merely a cheap backup pair.

SoundGuys measured 44 hours and 22 minutes in its standardized battery test, though that result is not the same as a manufacturer’s ANC-on maximum. It is comfortable and good value, but its microphone quality and overall refinement are behind Sony, Bose, and Sennheiser. Choose it over the CMF if USB-C audio and physical controls matter; choose the CMF if LDAC, multipoint, and personalized sound are the priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best lightweight ANC bargain: Sony WH-CH720N

The Sony WH-CH720N is approximately 192g, making it dramatically lighter than most over-ear ANC headphones. Sony rates it for up to 35 hours with ANC on and 50 hours with ANC off. It also has multipoint and a 3.5mm input.

Its limitation is value at the $179.99 list price. The WH-CH720N supports only SBC and AAC, and its build feels basic. It becomes attractive when discounted, particularly for someone who values low weight and wants Sony’s app and ANC rather than high-resolution codecs. At full price, compare it carefully with the Momentum 4 on sale, the ACCENTUM Wireless, or better budget ANC models.

Best simple low-cost choice: Sony WH-CH520

The Sony WH-CH520 is an on-ear headphone, not a smaller version of the XM6. At approximately 147g, it is exceptionally light, supports multipoint and app EQ, and offers up to 50 hours of battery life. Sony lists it at $69.99, although it belongs in the under-$60 category only when discounted.

There is no ANC, no ambient mode, and no wired passive mode. The on-ear pads also provide very little passive isolation compared with a sealed over-ear design. That makes it a good student, podcast, and casual-listening headphone for quiet environments, but a poor choice for an airplane or noisy commute. RTINGS uses it as an example of the on-ear portability-versus-isolation trade-off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best mid-price battery value: Sennheiser ACCENTUM Wireless

The Sennheiser ACCENTUM Wireless is a sensible option around $190. It provides a comfortable over-ear fit, hybrid ANC, and a claimed 50-hour battery. It offers more endurance than many similarly priced headphones, but its sound and call performance are less refined than Sennheiser’s Momentum line and the premium Sony and Bose models.

Best wireless headphones by budget

Use list prices as the stable reference. Retail prices move constantly, so a model should not be called a $79 headphone one week and a $129 headphone the next without explaining the difference.

Under $60: wait for a sale on Sony WH-CH520

At list price, the WH-CH520 is $69.99, so there is no need to force a sub-$60 recommendation. When it falls below $60, it is the best choice for light weight, long battery life, multipoint, and basic listening in quiet surroundings. Tozo HT3 and JBL Tune 520BT are alternatives to investigate at this price, but do not expect premium ANC, isolation, microphones, or wired fallback.

Move up to $80–$100 if: you need ANC, over-ear isolation, transparency mode, or USB-C audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

$60–$100: JLab JBuds Lux ANC or CMF Headphone Pro

At this level, the JLab JBuds Lux ANC is the easiest all-round recommendation, while CMF Headphone Pro offers more ambitious connectivity and personalization. The CMF’s $79 sale price on August 9, 2026 was $20 below its $99 MSRP, making it a genuinely attractive discount rather than a barely changed list price.

Choose JLab for: USB-C audio, physical buttons, a foldable design, and a straightforward feature set. Choose CMF for: LDAC, multipoint, Audiodo personalization, and interchangeable pads.

Skip both if: you need the best possible call quality in wind or transit, the most consistent ANC, or a heavily ruggedized headphone.

Sony WH-CH520 Wireless On-Ear Bluetooth Headphones with Mic, Cappuccino
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: With up to 50-hour battery life and quick charging, you’ll have enough power for multi-day road trips and long festival weekends. (USB Type-C Cable included)
  • HIGH QUALITY SOUND: Great sound quality customizable to your music preference with EQ Custom on the Sony | Headphones Connect App.

  • CRYSTAL CLEAR CALLS: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.
  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

$100–$150: soundcore Space 2

The Space 2 at $129.99 is the budget travel step-up. It adds stronger battery figures, LDAC, multipoint, adaptive ANC, physical controls, and a 3.5mm input. It is the better purchase than a $79 model for long flights or frequent commuting, provided you accept that high-frequency noise and voices will not disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Sony WH-CH720N is worth considering if a promotion brings it into this range and you value its light 192g build. At its $179.99 list price, it is no longer an obvious value leader.

$150–$250: Sennheiser ACCENTUM Wireless or a discounted premium model

The ACCENTUM Wireless at $189.95 gives you over-ear comfort, hybrid ANC, and a 50-hour battery. It is a rational new purchase in this bracket. Also check the sale price of the Sennheiser Momentum 4, JBL Live 780NC, Sony WH-CH720N, and older Sony WH-1000XM5.

Price discipline matters here: if a discounted Momentum 4 or XM5 is only modestly more expensive than an ACCENTUM, the older premium model may offer better ANC, sound, or finish. If the price gap is large, the ACCENTUM remains the more sensible value choice.

$250–$400: Momentum 5, or Momentum 4 on a strong sale

The Momentum 5’s $399.95 list price is the upper edge of this bracket and buys the strongest battery-and-longevity story here: up to 57 hours with ANC and a replaceable battery. It is the right choice for listeners who care about sound and expect to own the headphones for years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During promotions, the Momentum 4 can be compelling. Compare the actual discount with the Momentum 5’s list price rather than treating the older model’s original MSRP as the current value benchmark. The Sony XM6 and Bose Ultra 2 also become interesting if a sale brings them substantially closer to this band.

$400–$550: Sony XM6, Bose Ultra 2, HDB 630, Px7 S3, or AirPods Max 2

This is the premium general-purpose tier. Choose according to the feature you will use every day:

  • Sony XM6 at $459.99: the best balance of ANC, sound customization, calls, multipoint, and portability.
  • Bose Ultra 2 at $449: the strongest comfort and noise-blocking argument, with USB-C digital audio.
  • HDB 630 at $499.95: the sound-first and wired-listening choice, including the BTD 700 dongle.
  • Px7 S3 at approximately $479: premium construction and sound, but less convenient for travel.
  • AirPods Max 2 at $549: the deepest Apple integration, but the heaviest body and shortest battery among these premium choices.
  • JBL Tour One M3 at $449.95: a feature-heavy travel alternative with transmitter support and USB lossless audio.

Over $550: buy for a specific specialty, not the price tag

Above $550, models such as the Focal Bathys MG and specialist gaming headsets enter the conversation. Spending more can improve sound, materials, or specialized connectivity, but it does not automatically produce better ANC, microphone quality, comfort, or app usability. A premium specialty model is worthwhile only when you can identify the feature or sound improvement you will actually use.

Head-to-head comparisons

Sony WH-1000XM6 vs Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2

Choose Sony if you prioritize Choose Bose if you prioritize
Balanced overall performance Maximum comfort and noise blocking
App EQ and sound customization A spacious, engaging presentation
LDAC and LC3 support USB-C digital audio
Foldable travel design A fit that is less sensitive to glasses and seal changes
Strong calls and two-device use ANC and long-wear comfort above all else

There is no contradiction between Sony being the best overall and Bose being the best ANC or comfort choice. Different guides weight those criteria differently: TechGearLab favors the Bose overall, while RTINGS, SoundGuys, and What Hi-Fi? place the Sony in the overall position. The useful question is not which review is universally right; it is which result matches your daily use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony XM6 vs Sennheiser Momentum 5

Choose the Sony for stronger ANC, lighter weight, foldability, and a more complete travel-and-work package. Choose the Momentum 5 for its sound, much longer claimed ANC battery, USB-C and analog options, and replaceable battery. The Sennheiser is the better long-term ownership proposition for someone who listens for many hours and is willing to carry approximately 36g more.

Sennheiser Momentum 5 vs HDB 630

The Momentum 5 is the general-purpose model: warmer sound, adaptive ANC, spatial audio, excellent battery life, and a replaceable battery. The HDB 630 is the enthusiast model: more neutral tuning, parametric EQ, crossfeed, the BTD 700 dongle, and higher-resolution USB-C and analog listening. Choose Momentum 5 for commuting and convenience; choose HDB 630 for focused listening and wired flexibility.

CMF Headphone Pro vs JLab JBuds Lux ANC

Both are credible under-$100 options. CMF emphasizes LDAC, multipoint, personalized sound, interchangeable pads, and very long manufacturer battery claims. JLab emphasizes physical controls, folding portability, USB-C audio, app EQ, and an independently measured 44-hour-plus result. Neither matches premium microphones or ANC. Your phone, preferred controls, and need for wired USB-C audio should decide the tie.

Sony CH520 vs Sony CH720N

The CH520 is on-ear, lighter, cheaper, and has no ANC or wired operation. The CH720N is over-ear, has ANC and a 3.5mm input, and is still light at approximately 192g, but costs substantially more at list price. Choose CH520 for quiet rooms and minimal weight; choose CH720N only when you need isolation and find it at a convincing sale price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AirPods Max 2 vs Sony XM6 for iPhone

AirPods Max 2 wins on Apple-specific integration, spatial audio, and automatic ecosystem features. Sony wins on weight, battery life, price, Android flexibility, folding portability, and codec breadth. An iPhone user should buy AirPods Max 2 only when those Apple features justify 386.2g and a 20-hour battery. Otherwise, the XM6 is the more practical daily headphone.

What to look for before buying

Over-ear, on-ear, and open-back are different products

Over-ear cups surround the ears. They are usually the best choice for travel because they combine better passive isolation with room for thicker pads, but they are bulkier and can feel warm.

On-ear cups rest on the ears. They can be lighter and easier to carry, as the CH520 demonstrates, but they generally leak more sound and provide weaker passive isolation. They may also create pressure on the ears during long sessions.

Open-back headphones intentionally let sound in and out. They can create a more open presentation for quiet-room listening, but they are unsuitable for conventional ANC travel use. They are outside the main scope of this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

True wireless earbuds are also outside the comparison. They are better suited to exercise and very small pockets, while over-ear and on-ear headphones generally offer longer battery life, larger controls, and more consistent passive isolation.

ANC is not the same as silence

Active noise cancellation works best against predictable, lower-frequency sound such as aircraft engines, bus and train rumble, and HVAC systems. It is less complete against mid-frequency voices and office chatter, and high-frequency sounds such as keyboard clicks, clatter, alarms, and children’s voices can remain audible. Fit matters: a small gap around an ear pad can reduce both ANC and bass.

Sony’s XM6 performs strongly across a broad range in RTINGS testing, while What Hi-Fi? gives Bose a slight edge for outright blocking. Neither headphone eliminates every sound. If you wear glasses, have large ears, or use thick hair around the cups, try the fit before deciding.

ANC is also not hearing protection. It should not replace certified protection around hazardous noise. For ordinary listening, the World Health Organization’s safe-listening guidance uses 80dB for 40 hours per week as a reference allowance and recommends keeping average volume below that level where possible. ANC can reduce the temptation to turn up the volume, but it does not make loud listening harmless.

Sound quality: enjoyable tuning versus neutral tuning

There are two different meanings of “best sound.” A consumer tuning may be warm, bass-forward, spacious, and immediately enjoyable. A neutral tuning aims for a more faithful balance and is often preferred for critical listening or mixing.

  • Most neutral and analytical: Sennheiser HDB 630.
  • Detailed but more practical: Sennheiser Momentum 5.
  • Full-bodied premium alternative: Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3.
  • Customizable general-purpose sound: Sony XM6.
  • Spacious and engaging: Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2.

EQ can improve a headphone, but it cannot change its fit, driver limits, microphone processing, or ANC behavior. Do not buy a headphone for a codec alone if its default fit and sound do not suit you.

Battery claims require context

Manufacturers normally quote a best-case maximum, often with ANC or immersive processing disabled. Compare ANC-on figures first, then label ANC-off results separately. Codec, volume, spatial audio, temperature, and firmware can all change runtime.

  • Sony XM6: up to 30 hours with ANC and 40 without; RTINGS measured nearly 32 hours in continuous ANC-on testing.
  • Bose Ultra 2: up to 30 hours with ANC and Immersive Audio off, 23 with both enabled, and 45 with ANC off.
  • Momentum 5: up to 57 hours with ANC and a replaceable battery.
  • HDB 630: up to 60 hours according to Sennheiser.
  • AirPods Max 2: up to 20 hours with ANC.
  • Space 2: up to 50 hours with ANC and 70 without.
  • CH720N: up to 35 hours with ANC and 50 without.
  • CH520: up to 50 hours, with three minutes of charging providing up to 90 minutes of playback.

Quick charging is useful, but battery replacement matters more if you intend to keep a headphone for many years. The Momentum 5 is unusual in making replaceability a headline feature.

Bluetooth version is not a sound-quality ranking

Bluetooth 5.3, 5.4, 6.1, and newer numbers describe parts of the wireless standard; they do not independently determine tuning, ANC, microphone quality, fit, or perceived fidelity. For example, the Space 2 advertises Bluetooth 6.1 while the AirPods Max 2 uses Bluetooth 5.3. That does not make the cheaper Space 2 a better-sounding headphone.

What matters more is whether both your source and headphone support the desired codec, how the drivers and DSP are tuned, and whether you are using Bluetooth, USB-C digital audio, or an analog cable. LDAC, aptX Lossless, and other high-quality codecs require compatible source hardware, software, settings, and content.

Bluetooth SIG describes LE Audio as a separate next-generation audio architecture that includes LC3 and Auracast. Do not assume that a headphone advertising a recent Bluetooth version automatically supports every LE Audio feature.

USB-C charging is not USB-C audio

This distinction is easy to miss:

  • USB-C charging: the port replenishes the battery but may carry no audio.
  • USB-C digital audio: the headphone can receive digital sound over a cable, potentially bypassing Bluetooth compression and reducing latency.
  • USB-C lossless audio: a manufacturer-specific implementation that still requires the right cable, device, mode, and power state.
  • Analog audio: a 3.5mm connection, which may still require power for ANC or DSP.

Examples illustrate the difference. The Sony XM6 charges over USB-C but does not provide USB-C audio according to What Hi-Fi?’s current specifications table; it does include a 3.5mm input and passive operation. Bose Ultra 2 supports USB-C digital audio at 16-bit/44.1 or 48kHz, but USB use requires the headphone’s battery. Sennheiser’s HDB 630 supports USB-C and analog listening up to 24-bit/96kHz and includes its own USB-C Bluetooth dongle. AirPods Max 2 supports USB-C lossless and low-latency audio. JBL Tour One M3 includes a 192kHz/24-bit DAC and a transmitter. JLab’s JBuds Lux ANC brings USB-C audio to a much lower price.

If you plan to use a laptop, digital piano, airplane entertainment system, or game console by cable, verify the exact connection behavior rather than assuming the presence of a USB-C port is enough.

Calls depend on testing, not microphone count

A headphone can have several microphones and still sound poor to the person on the other end. Wind filtering, voice processing, sidetone, and background-noise rejection matter more than the number printed on the box.

Current lab coverage places the Sony XM6 and JBL Tour One M3 among the stronger call-focused choices. The inexpensive CH520 can work well indoors in a controlled room but is not designed to suppress traffic, wind, or transit noise as effectively. Budget ANC models are usually acceptable for an indoor meeting and less reliable outdoors. The Momentum 4, despite strong comfort and sound, has weaker call performance than its successors and several competitors.

Multipoint and controls matter for work

Multipoint lets a headphone maintain connections to two devices, such as a phone and laptop, and is valuable for remote work. Check whether it is supported natively, whether high-quality codecs disable it, and whether device switching is reliable with your operating systems.

Physical buttons are easier to use without looking and can be more dependable in cold weather. Touch controls feel cleaner but can misread hats, hair, or accidental contact. For office use, prioritize a clear transparency mode, dependable call controls, useful sidetone, and an easy mute workflow.

Platform compatibility

iPhone and iPad

AirPods Max 2 has the deepest integration, but Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, JBL, JLab, and CMF all work with iPhones over standard Bluetooth. Do not pay extra for LDAC or aptX features as an iPhone buyer’s main reason to upgrade; Apple devices do not expose every Android-oriented codec.

Android

Sony XM6, CMF Headphone Pro, Momentum 5, and HDB 630 offer more high-resolution codec flexibility. The HDB 630’s included BTD 700 dongle is particularly useful with a phone that does not support the headphone’s preferred codec, although the phone must support the appropriate USB connection and the dongle may need an adapter.

Windows and Mac

Prioritize multipoint, microphone quality, USB audio if latency matters, and dependable call controls. Also check whether the companion app is mobile-only and whether your laptop’s Bluetooth stack supports the codec and multipoint combination you want.

Fit, comfort, and physical design

Weight is only one part of comfort. Check ear-pad depth, inner opening size, clamp, headband pressure, heat buildup, glasses compatibility, and whether your ears touch the internal driver cover. Large ears may need deeper cups; small heads may find some over-ear models loose; on-ear models can be more secure but may create pressure points.

Fit also changes sound. If glasses break the seal, bass can drop and external noise can increase. Replacement pads can alter the sound and ANC, so do not assume a third-party pad is a neutral upgrade. In hot climates, faux-leather pads may become uncomfortable, while breathable pads may reduce the original seal.

Most general-purpose wireless headphones are not designed for exercise. A lack of an IP rating is not proof that a little rain will immediately destroy a pair; it means the manufacturer has not certified it for water or sweat resistance. For running or regular gym use, a purpose-built sports earbud or headset is safer than any of these over-ear recommendations.

Gaming, television, and airplane use

Gaming

Ordinary Bluetooth can introduce audible latency, especially in games where sound must line up precisely with action. For serious gaming, choose a dedicated headset with a 2.4GHz USB receiver, Bluetooth fallback, or both. SteelSeries positions its Arctis Nova Elite as a specialized model with simultaneous PC, console, Bluetooth, and line-in connections plus a dual-battery system. That kind of product is more appropriate for latency-sensitive play than a general-purpose XM6 or Bose.

Television

Bluetooth headphones work with a TV only when the television supports Bluetooth audio transmission. Check whether the TV can pair with headphones, whether it supports the desired codec, and whether its audio delay controls are adequate. If the TV has no Bluetooth, use a compatible transmitter; a headphone’s multipoint feature does not solve a source device’s lack of Bluetooth output.

Airplanes

For frequent flights, prioritize ANC-on battery life, a compact case, quick charging, comfort, and a wired fallback. Sony XM6, Bose Ultra 2, Momentum 5, and JBL Tour One M3 all make stronger travel cases than the CH520 because they combine over-ear isolation or ANC with more suitable controls and features. A wired connection still requires the appropriate airline adapter in some cabins. Do not assume USB-C charging means the seat-back system will send audio over USB-C.

Sale prices: when should you buy?

Use the manufacturer list price as your anchor and treat a sale as temporary. Sony lists the XM6 at $459.99, while Bose lists the QuietComfort Ultra 2 at $449; both brands have shown temporary direct-store discounts. A discount is not automatically good if an older premium model or a better-fitting competitor is also reduced.

  • CMF Headphone Pro at $79: checked August 9, 2026 against its $99 MSRP; a meaningful 20% reduction and an attractive buy if you need budget ANC now.
  • JLab JBuds Lux ANC at $79.99: already a strong value at its stated MSRP; buy for the feature set rather than waiting for a small discount.
  • Space 2 at $129.99: a reasonable standard reference for budget travel; compare any sale against the JLab and CMF rather than focusing only on the percentage off.
  • CH720N at $179.99: wait for a clear discount. At list price, it sits too close to more capable older premium models during common promotions.
  • Sony, Bose, and Sennheiser premium models: compare the sale price with the current list price and the next lower tier. A small discount should not override a fit or connectivity advantage, while a large reduction can make a previous-generation flagship the better value.

A practical rule is to decide which features are non-negotiable before opening a sale page. If you need USB-C audio, a discounted XM6 is not a substitute for a Bose, Momentum, HDB 630, AirPods Max 2, or JBL model that actually supports it. If you need replaceability, no discount on a sealed-battery headphone changes that trade-off.

What current buying guides often miss

  • Best overall is not universal. RTINGS and SoundGuys favor Sony overall, TechGearLab favors Bose overall, and What Hi-Fi? gives Sony the overall position while separately naming Bose for ANC. The disagreement reflects different weighting, not necessarily bad testing.
  • Budget categories need labels. The cheapest model, best ANC model, best-sounding model, and best-tested value are different awards. That is why CH520, CMF, JLab, 1More SonoFlow Pro, and Space 2 can all appear in budget discussions without directly contradicting one another.
  • Fit deserves more attention. Fit changes comfort, bass, isolation, and ANC. A return policy is a real buying feature.
  • USB-C needs a dedicated check. Charging, digital audio, lossless audio, and analog operation are different capabilities.
  • Battery replaceability matters. Momentum 5’s replaceable cell deserves more weight than a small difference in initial runtime.
  • “Wireless headphones” is an imprecise category. Earbuds, gaming headsets, open-back models, and general-purpose Bluetooth over-ear headphones serve different jobs.

Do not let an unannounced product displace a verified recommendation. A rumored Sony WH-CH730N has appeared in coverage based on import filings, but Sony has not confirmed its specifications, price, or release date. It should not be treated as an alternative until an official announcement exists.

A simple buying decision

  1. Need the best all-rounder? Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6.
  2. Need the strongest ANC or softest long-wear fit? Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, 2nd Gen.
  3. Need sound, battery, and a replaceable battery? Choose the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless.
  4. Need critical listening, high-resolution wired audio, or a USB-C dongle? Choose the Sennheiser HDB 630.
  5. Need an iPhone ecosystem experience above everything else? Choose AirPods Max 2, but accept the 386.2g weight and 20-hour battery.
  6. Need ANC under $100? Start with CMF Headphone Pro or JLab JBuds Lux ANC.
  7. Need budget travel battery life? Choose soundcore Space 2.
  8. Need the cheapest simple pair? Buy Sony WH-CH520 when discounted, and accept that it has no ANC or wired mode.
  9. Need latency-sensitive gaming? Buy a dedicated 2.4GHz gaming headset instead of ordinary Bluetooth headphones.

Sources and testing context

Official specifications and prices were checked against the manufacturers linked throughout this guide. Independent comparisons from RTINGS, SoundGuys, What Hi-Fi?, and TechGearLab do not agree on one universal winner because they weight sound, ANC, comfort, calls, and value differently. Battery figures are separated into manufacturer claims and independent measurements wherever the evidence allows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Bluetooth 6 or Bluetooth 6.1 headphones automatically better?

No. Bluetooth version alone does not determine sound quality, ANC, microphone performance, fit, or battery life. Codec support on both devices, driver tuning, DSP, and the physical seal matter more. The soundcore Space 2 advertising Bluetooth 6.1 does not make it automatically better-sounding than the AirPods Max 2 with Bluetooth 5.3.

Is ANC worth paying for?

Yes if you commute, fly, work near HVAC or office noise, or tend to turn up the volume to overcome background sound. ANC is most effective against steady low-frequency rumble and less effective against voices, sudden sounds, and high-frequency clatter. It is not certified hearing protection.

Do Bluetooth headphones work with a TV?

They work when the television supports Bluetooth audio transmission. Check the TV’s Bluetooth compatibility, codec support, and audio-delay controls. If it has no Bluetooth output, use a compatible transmitter.

Can I use wireless headphones with an airplane seat?

Usually, if the headphone has a 3.5mm input and you have the appropriate airline adapter. Sony XM6, Bose alternatives with analog support, Momentum models, Space 2, and Sony CH720N should be checked for their included cables and exact wired behavior. USB-C charging does not mean the seat-back system will send audio over USB-C.

Can Bluetooth headphones work when the battery is dead?

Only if the particular model supports passive analog operation. Sony lists passive operation through its 3.5mm input, while the Sony WH-CH520 has no wired mode. USB-C audio and ANC often require the headphone to remain powered, so check the manual rather than assuming every cable works with a dead battery.

Is LDAC or aptX Lossless worth paying for on an iPhone?

Not as the main reason to buy. Apple devices do not support every Android-oriented codec. iPhone buyers should prioritize sound, fit, ANC, battery, calls, and Apple integration; Android buyers with compatible hardware can make better use of LDAC or aptX Lossless.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are over-ear headphones safer than earbuds?

Neither form is automatically safer. Hearing risk is driven mainly by volume and exposure time. WHO uses 80dB for 40 hours per week as a reference safe-listening allowance and recommends keeping average volume below that where possible. ANC may help you listen at a lower volume, but it is not hearing protection.

What is the best wireless headphone for glasses wearers?

Fit is individual, but Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2 is reported by RTINGS to be less sensitive to fit issues than Sony XM6. Glasses can break the ear-pad seal, reducing bass and isolation. Buy from a retailer with an easy return policy and test the headphones with your normal frames.

Are expensive headphones worth it for podcasts and video calls?

Not necessarily. For podcasts, comfort, clear speech, transparency, battery, and reliable calls matter more than LDAC or lossless audio. The Sony XM6 and JBL Tour One M3 are stronger call-oriented choices, while a budget JLab, CMF, or Space 2 can be sufficient indoors.

Are wireless over-ear headphones suitable for exercise?

Usually not. Many general-purpose models are not IP-rated for sweat or water. If you exercise regularly, choose a product specifically certified for that use rather than assuming any wireless headphone is gym-safe.

The Bottom Line

The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the best overall buy for most people in 2026. Spend the same kind of money on Bose if maximum ANC and comfort matter more, or on Sennheiser if sound, battery longevity, and a replaceable battery matter more. Under $100, choose between the CMF Headphone Pro and JLab JBuds Lux ANC according to connectivity and control preferences; for the cheapest simple option, wait for a sale on the Sony WH-CH520. The best headphone is the one whose fit, battery, connectivity, and noise-control trade-offs match how you actually listen.
