In a 2015 interview, collector Mark Sinclair described why he chose a platinum, black-dial Patek Philippe 5960P-016—and why he kept it unworn. Its annual calendar and flyback chronograph made it technically appealing; a factory visit and personal milestones made it meaningful. His account is a snapshot from that interview, not a confirmation of his present ownership or use.
The watch Mark chose
Mark identified his watch as the Patek Philippe 5960P-016: a platinum-cased model with a black opaline dial and black alligator strap. In the Monochrome Watches interview published 1 September 2015, it was described as combining an annual calendar with an automatic flyback chronograph.
The calendar displays the day, date and month through apertures. The dial also has a power-reserve indicator and a day/night indicator within the chronograph counter. The interview gives the case dimensions as 40.5 mm across, excluding the crown, and 13.5 mm thick.
The movement is identified as calibre CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H, with a column wheel, vertical clutch and 21-karat gold rotor. The interview reports a 45–55-hour power reserve; these are specifications reported in 2015, not a new measurement. Phillips Perpetual’s 5960 reference guide also identifies the family’s annual-calendar chronograph pairing and the platinum, black-dial 5960P-016 configuration.

Patek Philippe’s official page is for the related 5961P-001, not Mark’s 5960P-016. It supports the related calibre and complication family, but its diamond-set bezel and different dial configuration should not be attributed to his watch: Patek Philippe 5961P-001.
Why the 5960P appealed to him
Mark said he first became interested in mechanical watches after receiving one as a birthday present in 2010. He later learned about what collectors call the “Big Three”—Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin—and recalled weighing a Nautilus, Royal Oak and Overseas before settling on a Patek Philippe. Those choices and brand impressions were his personal account.

He described the 5960 as a sporty, complicated watch with a nearly symmetrical layout. A visit to the Patek Philippe museum and factory in 2013 further shaped his interest. After learning that precious-metal references were being discontinued, he said he contacted his dealer to secure the black-dial 5960P-016.
Why he kept it unworn
At the time of the interview, Mark said he had not worn the watch because he thought it might become collectible. He also connected it emotionally with earning his law degree in 2013 and with his Patek Philippe visit. He said, “I will never part with it, as it has too much sentimental value for me.” That was his stated feeling at interview time; it does not establish his current ownership, wearing habits or intentions, and it is not evidence that the watch would appreciate in value.

Mark’s approach to collecting
Mark said he considered a watch’s aesthetics, complications and history, researched before buying, and asked experienced people for advice. He also wanted each addition to bring something distinct to his collection, while making the final decision himself. His practical advice was: “My best advice would be to do your research before pulling the trigger, or else you will end up regretting having bought a dozen watches.”

For anyone assessing a pre-owned example, the relevant questions are specific to the individual watch: confirm the reference and configuration, assess condition and provenance, and check whether original papers and box are included. Mark’s account explains what the watch meant to him; it cannot substitute for inspection or documentation of another example.
