His account is an anecdote about one editorial team, not evidence of a wider buying trend. The watch’s appeal, as he described it, was a distinctive bronze diver with a 44 mm case, an in-house automatic movement, and a design that felt less imposing on his wrist than its diameter suggested.
Why did all five colleagues choose it?
Stockton’s explanation is rooted in the encounter and his own reaction, rather than a formal comparison or buyer survey. He described the case’s brushed bronze as pinkish, the strap as distressed-looking, and the dial and bezel as less stark together than he had expected. He also found that the curved lugs made the 44 mm watch wear smaller than anticipated on his wrist. Those are personal impressions, not a fit guarantee for other wrists.

The group’s decision is best understood as a striking editorial anecdote: Stockton wrote, “Let’s just say that out of the four of us who attended the discussion (plus a fifth who didn’t attend), all of us ordered a watch – the same watch.” It does not establish how popular the model was with buyers generally.
What were the 2017 model’s specifications?
Fratello’s March 2017 launch report described a 300-piece edition tied to the 70th anniversary of the Kon-Tiki expedition. Its specifications were:

#1 Best Overall
- Material: CUSN8 bronze case, bezel, stainless steel case back, synthetic sapphire crystal, suede leather band, stainless steel buckle
| Feature | 2017 launch-report details |
|---|---|
| Case | 44 mm bronze, made from a copper-and-tin alloy described as aluminum-free; no helium valve |
| Water resistance | 200 m |
| Movement | Automatic Eterna caliber 3902A; 28,800 beats per hour; 65-hour power reserve |
| Display | No date |
| Bezel | Unidirectional ceramic, with Super-LumiNova numerals and a US Navy “no decompression” scale |
| Strap | Brown waterproof leather, tack-stitched, 22 mm wide, with a bronze pin buckle |
| Edition | 300 pieces, for the Kon-Tiki expedition’s 70th anniversary |
These details come from the contemporaneous launch article; they are not independent test results. In particular, the article said the aluminum-free alloy should be more resistant to turning green than some bronze alloys. It did not establish how this specific watch ages over years of wear.
Is the current KonTiki Bronze Diver the same watch?
Eterna’s current catalog lists a KonTiki Bronze Diver 44 mm, reference 1291.78.51.1430, with the 3902A movement, a 65-hour reserve, a 44 mm brushed bronze case, green ceramic bezel ring, sapphire crystal, and brown waterproof leather strap. The listed movement specification is 28,800 vibrations per hour and 30 jewels. Eterna’s catalog also lists reference 1291.78.53.1431 with a blue dial and blue ceramic ring.
These current catalog entries help identify the continuing Bronze Diver line, but they should not be treated as proof that every detail matches the 2017 limited edition. A catalog listing also does not establish current stock or a transaction price.

Historical reports disagree. Fratello gave a launch price of €2,990; Time and Watches reported €2,690 / US$2,650 for the 2017 watch. Neither figure should be read as a current price, and the available reports do not resolve the discrepancy. Eterna’s shop page describes the anniversary collection and its specifications, but does not establish present availability or a geography-specific transaction price.

Quick Recap
What to check if you are considering one
- Fit: The 44 mm diameter is substantial on paper. Stockton’s experience with the curved lugs is useful context, but wrist shape and preference determine whether it works for you.
- Model identity: Check the reference and edition details rather than assuming a current Bronze Diver listing is the exact 2017 anniversary watch.
- Condition and aging: The cited launch account does not provide a long-term wear test or measured patina outcome. Inspect the individual watch and ask about its history.
- Replacement strap: The launch report specifies a 22 mm strap. That makes another 22 mm strap a plausible option, but confirm the lug width and fit on the specific watch before ordering.
- Price: Treat the published launch figures as historical and conflicting; they do not verify present market value.
