“The Rolex with an Omega heart” was a modified Rolex Oyster, not a factory Rolex–Omega collaboration or a standard production watch. Around 1989, watchmaker George Daniels fitted it with his co-axial escapement to demonstrate that the design could work at wristwatch scale. Omega later brought the escapement into production, beginning with a De Ville in 1999.
What was the Rolex with an Omega heart?
It was a proof-of-concept: George Daniels’s modified Rolex Oyster, fitted with the co-axial escapement he had invented. The watch was not made by Rolex with an Omega movement, and it was not a regular Rolex model. The available account does not establish the Rolex’s exact reference or original calibre.
Daniels used the Oyster to show that his escapement could be scaled down to fit a production-wristwatch format. Roger W. Smith later found the watch among the contents of Daniels’s workshop, which Daniels had bequeathed to him. Smith described the prototype as “prototypically crude, but works perfectly well.” That is a qualitative account of the watch, not a published accuracy test.
How does a co-axial escapement work?
A mechanical watch’s escapement meters energy from the gear train and delivers impulses to the balance, the oscillator that regulates the watch’s rate. The conventional lever escapement performs these tasks through contact that involves sliding friction.

Daniels’s co-axial design uses three pallets and separates locking from impulse. The arrangement was intended to reduce sliding friction compared with the lever escapement. It is not frictionless or wholly free of lubrication: Smith noted that lubrication is still used in practice to reduce impact corrosion.
Omega says the co-axial arrangement reduces friction and lubrication needs and supports longer service intervals. Those are the manufacturer’s stated benefits, not independent performance measurements of Daniels’s Rolex prototype. The sources do not provide controlled accuracy or longevity results for that watch.

How did Daniels’s prototype lead to Omega production?
The history is best understood as distinct milestones: invention, wristwatch-scale demonstration, and commercial production. George Daniels invented the co-axial escapement in 1974, according to Roger W. Smith Ltd’s timeline. Around 1989, Daniels put it into the Rolex Oyster as a demonstration. Omega then adopted the design for production; the first production co-axial watch is identified as an Omega De Ville launched in 1999.
| Milestone | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Daniels invents the co-axial escapement | 1974 | Roger W. Smith Ltd dates the invention to this year. |
| Modified Rolex Oyster prototype | Around 1989 | Daniels demonstrates the escapement in a wristwatch-sized format, according to Roger Smith’s 2019 interview. |
| First production co-axial watch | 1999 | The first production model is identified as an Omega De Ville. |
| Omega’s stated introduction period | 1999–2013 | Omega frames its co-axial introduction as a rollout over this period. |
These dates describe different stages, not competing claims about a single launch. Daniels created the mechanism; the Rolex was a prototype; Omega made the design a production-watch technology.

Why did Daniels choose a Rolex Oyster?
The Oyster gave Daniels a production-wristwatch format in which to demonstrate the escapement’s feasibility. Smith said the prototype was intended both to show the co-axial’s potential relative to the lever escapement and to prove that it could be scaled down for a wristwatch. That statement explains the demonstration’s purpose; it should not be mistaken for results from a controlled head-to-head test.
What does the prototype prove—and what does it not?
The watch is historically significant because it shows Daniels’s design installed in a wristwatch-sized case before Omega’s production adoption. Its importance is as a mechanical proof-of-concept and a link between Daniels’s invention and Omega’s later use of it.

- It supports: the claim that the co-axial escapement could be fitted into a wristwatch format.
- It does not establish: an independently measured accuracy advantage, a quantified service-life improvement, or a complete performance comparison with a lever escapement.
- Details not established in the cited accounts: the Rolex reference, original calibre, prototype dimensions, and independent accuracy measurements.
Rolex and Omega: different escapement approaches
The useful comparison is technical and historical, not a verdict on which brand makes the better watch. The cited comparison describes Rolex as refining the conventional lever escapement, while Omega industrialized Daniels’s co-axial design. The approaches differ in escapement architecture and manufacturing history; that distinction alone cannot establish an overall winner in accuracy, durability, or ownership experience.
