There is no objective, authoritative ranking of the greatest dive watches. Two especially consequential lineages began in 1953: Rolex says it launched the Submariner that year, while Blancpain dates the presentation of the Fifty Fathoms to the same year. Their histories make them essential points of comparison—but not a complete or universally agreed top list.
What makes a dive watch one of the greatest?
A dive watch is more than a watch with a large water-resistance number. Its practical job is to help a diver track elapsed time and read the watch in demanding underwater conditions. An all-time selection is therefore best judged by several factors together:
- Historical influence: whether the watch helped establish the form or expectations of the modern diver’s watch.
- Functional design: how clearly it indicates elapsed time and how readily its display can be read.
- Documented use and contribution: evidence of professional or exploratory use, or of a technical contribution that mattered beyond the product itself.
- Longevity: whether the design and its lineage have continued over time.
- Evidence behind the claims: a stated depth rating is useful, but it is not by itself proof of compliance with a divers’ watch standard.
These criteria explain why the Submariner and Fifty Fathoms belong in a discussion of historically important divers. They do not establish a definitive ranking, nor do the available facts support a complete shortlist of every deserving model.
Why the Rolex Submariner matters
Rolex says the Submariner launched in 1953 as the company’s first divers’ wristwatch waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet). The brand’s historical account places its launch “at a time when underwater exploration was becoming increasingly popular.” That is Rolex’s corporate description of the period, not a quotation attributed to a named individual. - Refined Proportions & Vintage-Inspired Design: At just 11.8mm thick, this watch features a carefully re-engineered case and bezel for better visual balance. The inner rehaut is straightened (not sloped like the original 5513), which opens up the dial for improved legibility while keeping the overall dimensions compact. The bezel measures 40.7mm — slightly enlarged for a more natural, balanced look on the wrist
- Premium PT5000 / PT5004 Automatic Movement: Powered by the high-precision PT5000 (date) or PT5004 (no-date) movement, beating 8 times per second (28,800 vibrations per hour) for an incredibly smooth seconds hand motion. With 25 jewels to reduce friction, it delivers performance comparable to the Swis ETA 2824 and Sellita SW200. Plus, a 38-hour power reserve and hacking seconds let you set the time precisely, creating a fluid glide that feels just like a luxury Swis timepiece
- Scratch Domed Sapphire Crystal: Crafted from 316L stainless steel with a refined case finish for durability and a premium feel. The domed sapphire crystal features a high-clarity anti-reflective (AR) coating, delivering excellent scratch resistance and easy readability from any angle. Plus, the unidirectional rotating bezel offers crisp, satisfying clicks with 120 precise positions for reliable dive timing
- Super Luminous BGW9/C3 Light: This watch features Swis Super-Luminous BGW9 or C3 luminous material on the hands, markers, and dial. The BGW9 emits a cool blue glow for long-lasting visibility — lasting at least 5 hours in the dark — while the C3 provides a bright green initial burst for quick readability after moving from light to dark. Both recharge quickly in bright environments. The matte black dial with applied indices ensures perfect legibility by day
- 20Bar Water Resistant: Our WD5513P professional mechanical dive watch delivers true 20Bar/200M water resistance, built to meet ISO 6425 dive watch standards. The screw-down crown is a riple-sealed system that prevents water intrusion (please tighten crown before contact with water). And with the double gasket system - Reinforced at crown, case back, and crystal. Suitable for professional marine activities, swimming, water sports, and daily wearing. Not recommended for showering with hot water
The current Submariner and Submariner Date are rated by Rolex to 300 metres (1,000 feet). That present-day figure should not be confused with the original 1953 rating: it describes current models, not the watch as first launched. Rolex Submariner collection
Rolex also says that many Submariner specifications and design features were taken into account in the creation of ISO 6425. This is a claim about the model’s influence as described by its maker; it does not mean the Submariner alone defined the standard or that every Submariner automatically meets it.

Why the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms matters
Blancpain dates the presentation of the Fifty Fathoms to 1953 and describes it as the first modern diver’s watch. The priority claim should be read as Blancpain’s historical account, rather than an uncontested verdict on every earlier water-resistant watch. Blancpain Fifty Fathoms
The lineage is still represented in Blancpain’s current collection. Blancpain states that its current 42 mm Fifty Fathoms has a water resistance of 30 bar. That is a specification for the cited current model, not a universal figure for every Fifty Fathoms produced since 1953. Blancpain 42 mm Fifty Fathoms

How to interpret depth ratings and ISO 6425
A depth rating and a standards-compliance claim answer different questions. A manufacturer’s rating states a water-resistance specification for a watch. ISO 6425 specifies requirements and test methods for divers’ watches and saturation diving watches; a rating alone does not establish that a watch has been tested to, or complies with, that standard.
The public abstract for ISO 6425:2018 says it applies to watches designed to withstand at least 100 metres and equipped with a secured dive-time indication visible in darkness. ISO identifies the 2018 edition as current and says it was reviewed and confirmed in 2024. The complete standard is a paid publication; the public abstract does not provide every test detail.

- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Rolex’s account of the Submariner’s influence and ISO’s description of the standard are compatible, but they are not interchangeable evidence. One describes design features that Rolex says were considered during the standard’s creation; the other sets out a standard’s scope and testing framework.
What a reader can—and cannot—conclude
| Watch or reference | Established historical point | Stated water resistance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex Submariner | Rolex says it launched in 1953 as the brand’s first divers’ wristwatch. | 100 metres (330 feet) at launch, according to Rolex; current Submariner and Submariner Date models are rated to 300 metres (1,000 feet) by Rolex. | Rolex says the design’s features were taken into account in creating ISO 6425; this does not establish that the watch alone defined the standard. |
| Blancpain Fifty Fathoms | Blancpain dates its presentation to 1953 and calls it the first modern diver’s watch. | 30 bar for Blancpain’s current 42 mm model. | The historical priority wording is Blancpain’s claim; the current model’s specification should not be applied to all earlier versions. |
| ISO 6425:2018 | ISO’s current edition was published in 2018 and confirmed in 2024. | Not a product depth rating; the public abstract describes watches designed to withstand at least 100 metres. | The standard specifies additional requirements and test methods. A depth rating alone does not prove compliance. |
The evidence here establishes two significant 1953 histories and clarifies how to read water-resistance claims. It does not supply independent comparative tests, a full historical shortlist, current prices, service costs, inventory, or comparative wrist-fit measurements. Those are separate questions that should be assessed model by model rather than inferred from heritage.
