Later designs explored titanium and much higher stated pressure resistance with the Ocean 2000, added a mechanical depth gauge in the GST Deep One, and returned to the Aquatimer with a linked external-and-internal bezel system in 2014.
1967: IWC’s first Aquatimer
IWC dates its first Aquatimer to 1967. The company’s timeline gives it water resistance to 200 metres and an internal rotating bezel for setting dive time. Its historical feature identifies the watch as reference IW812 AD, powered by calibre 8541. A second crown turned the bezel beneath the crystal, placing the timing scale inside the case rather than on an exposed outer ring.
IWC describes the original’s black dial, large numerals and luminous hands as choices intended to aid legibility in low visibility. That is the manufacturer’s stated design rationale, not a comparative test result. The protected inner bezel is the model’s defining design choice: it could be set without handling a conventional external bezel.
1982: the titanium Ocean 2000
IWC dates the Ocean 2000 to 1982. The company describes it as a titanium-cased diver’s watch pressure-resistant to 200 bar, with an external rotating bezel. That wording matters: IWC gives the original Aquatimer a water-resistance rating in metres, while its Ocean 2000 description uses bar. These are the respective historical specifications reported by IWC, not evidence of the condition or water resistance of any particular vintage example today.

The Ocean 2000 marked a change in emphasis from the first Aquatimer’s protected internal timing scale: IWC combined a titanium case with an outer rotating bezel and a substantially higher stated pressure-resistance figure. The manufacturer’s descriptions establish those design and rating details; they do not provide an independent performance comparison between the watches.
1997–1999: GST and the Deep One’s depth gauge
IWC says it introduced the GST sports-watch line in 1997. In 1999, it added the GST Deep One, which IWC’s historical catalogue identifies as its first watch with a mechanical depth gauge. Where the early Aquatimer focused on timing a dive, the Deep One added a mechanical way to indicate depth.

2009 and 2014: the Aquatimer evolves
The 2009 collection revision
IWC’s catalogue records a completely revised Aquatimer collection in 2009. The available historical account does not establish the full model-by-model changes, so the date is more firmly supported than any detailed description of what changed across that generation.
The 2014 external-and-internal bezel
IWC dates a new Aquatimer generation to 2014 and highlights its external/internal rotating-bezel arrangement. The design keeps an inner rotating scale but lets the wearer operate it through the outer ring. IWC’s technical explanation says the SafeDive system couples the two: the internal bezel can be adjusted only by turning the external bezel anticlockwise. This differs both from the 1967 Aquatimer’s second-crown operation and from a simple independently operated external bezel.

What IWC lists in the Aquatimer collection now
On 5 October 2026, IWC’s Aquatimer collection page described the range as dive watches, listed 10 watches and showed sizes 42, 44 and 49. Those are page contents as accessed on that date, not permanent specifications or a guarantee that every listed watch is available everywhere. Check IWC’s Aquatimer collection page for the current lineup.

A historical rating is not a present-day seal test. Age, wear, prior repairs and storage can affect an individual watch, so an original Aquatimer’s or Ocean 2000’s published rating should not be treated as proof that a vintage example is safe to take into water now.

IWC’s technical guidance says diver’s watches with indicated water resistance of 12 bar or greater are professional measuring instruments designed for scuba diving. It recommends regular water-resistance testing, at least annually, by an authorized IWC Official Agent. After use in or under water, IWC recommends rinsing the watch with clear, fresh, lukewarm water, then cleaning and drying it. See IWC’s technical and service guidance for its current instructions.
