Abraham-Louis Breguet received a ten-year patent for the tourbillon on June 26, 1801. He designed it to address rate variations caused by gravity in upright pocket watches: a rotating cage carries the escapement and balance, changing their orientation over time. The patent was only one milestone—the mechanism was commercialized, publicly exhibited and later adapted for wristwatches on a separate timeline.
What is a tourbillon watch?
A mechanical tourbillon watch houses its escapement and balance assembly in a rotating cage. As the cage turns, it changes the assembly’s orientation, distributing rate variations associated with vertical positions instead of leaving the assembly fixed in one position. Breguet and the Foundation of Haute Horlogerie describe a cage that generally completes one revolution per minute (Montres Breguet; Foundation of Haute Horlogerie).
The design addressed the way pocket watches were commonly carried: upright, where gravity could affect the regulator’s rate differently according to its position. In a letter dated December 26, 1800, reproduced in Breguet’s historical essay, Breguet wrote that he had “successfully compensated for the anomalies arising from the different positions of the centres of gravity and the movements of the regulator (…)” (Montres Breguet).
A conventional regulator keeps its escapement fixed relative to the movement; a tourbillon puts the escapement and balance in a rotating cage. Later forms include double-tourbillon designs, so not every modern implementation is mechanically identical (Louvre).

Who invented the tourbillon, and when?
Abraham-Louis Breguet invented the tourbillon and received a ten-year patent for the regulator on June 26, 1801. The patent also gives the date as 7 Messidor, Year IX, using the French Republican calendar then in force. The Louvre’s chronology independently records the 1801 patent (Montres Breguet; Louvre).
“Invented,” “patented,” “commercialized” and “presented publicly” refer to different events. Breguet’s account says he submitted a sealed technical file in December 1800, before receiving the patent. It dates the first commercialized tourbillon to 1805 and its public presentation to the 1806 National Exhibition of Industrial Products in Paris (Montres Breguet).

How the tourbillon’s history unfolded
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| December 1800 | Breguet submitted a sealed technical file describing the invention, according to the maker’s historical account (Montres Breguet). |
| June 26, 1801 (7 Messidor, Year IX) | Breguet received a ten-year patent for the “Tourbillon.” The second date is from the French Republican calendar (Montres Breguet; Louvre). |
| 1805 | Breguet dates the first commercialization of the tourbillon to this year (Montres Breguet). |
| 1806 | The invention was presented at the National Exhibition of Industrial Products in Paris. Breguet says it was described as maintaining accuracy in differing vertical or inclined positions (Montres Breguet). |
| 1805–1823 | Breguet reports that 35 tourbillon watches were sold between commercialization and the watchmaker’s death in 1823. This is the maker’s historical count, not an independently audited total (Montres Breguet). |
| Mid-1980s | Breguet’s historical essay describes the tourbillon’s return in the smaller cases of wristwatches. The essay does not establish a definitive first wristwatch model to use one (Montres Breguet). |
| Today | Breguet continues to present the tourbillon as part of its watchmaking, while the Louvre documents later forms such as a double tourbillon (Montres Breguet; Louvre). |
Why the first examples do not share one simple date
Some early watches illustrate why the patent date should not be treated as the date of every first. Breguet’s account identifies No. 282 as completed in 1800 and later sold by his son, and No. 169 as given to the son of London horologer John Arnold in 1809. Those examples belong to the experimental and subsequent history of the mechanism, rather than changing the account’s 1805 date for first commercialization (Montres Breguet).

The tourbillon’s historical aim was to address gravity-related rate variations in vertical positions, particularly relevant to upright pocket watches. That purpose is not proof that a modern tourbillon wristwatch is universally more accurate than a comparable conventional watch. The cited sources explain the mechanism and its design intent but do not provide controlled comparative accuracy tests for current wristwatches (Foundation of Haute Horlogerie).

Today, the tourbillon is also a visible demonstration of mechanical watchmaking skill and a recognizable complication. Its rotating cage changes the watch’s construction and visual form; whether it improves a particular watch’s real-world timekeeping cannot be inferred from the complication alone.
