The Maison describes its history as uninterrupted since 1755 and calls itself the world’s oldest watch manufacturer, but those are the company’s own claims, not independently audited conclusions.
Who founded Vacheron Constantin?
Jean-Marc Vacheron founded the workshop in Geneva in 1755, according to the Maison’s official timeline. He was 24 when he signed his first apprentice’s contract. Vacheron Constantin treats that contract as the Maison’s “birth certificate”; it also dates the first known pocket watch associated with Vacheron to that same year.
The distinction matters: Jean-Marc Vacheron is the founder associated with the 1755 origin, while the Vacheron Constantin name reflects a partnership formed 64 years later. The official account is the company’s own historical narrative; it does not, by itself, independently establish every claim about continuity or priority among watchmakers.
How did the Vacheron Constantin name begin?
In April 1819, Jacques Barthélémi Vacheron, Jean-Marc’s grandson, entered into partnership with François Constantin, a businessman who travelled on the Maison’s behalf and helped open new markets. The company’s heritage account identifies the partnership name as Vacheron et Constantin. It presents this alliance as the beginning of the business identity that became Vacheron Constantin.

The Maison also connects its long-running motto to a letter Constantin wrote to Vacheron from Turin on 5 July 1819. In the company’s reproduction, Constantin wrote: “Do better if possible and that is always possible.” The wording and attribution here follow the Maison’s official historical account; an independent archival transcription is not established by that account.
What shaped the Maison’s watchmaking identity?
1839: tools for more consistent production
Vacheron Constantin credits horological engineer Georges Auguste Leschot, hired in 1839, with adapting the pantograph to watchmaking. In the Maison’s telling, the tooling made standardized production and the exchange of movement components possible. The company says Leschot received the Prix de la Rive in 1844.

1880: the Maltese cross emblem
The Maison adopted the Maltese cross as its official emblem in 1880. Its heritage account traces the inspiration to a component mounted on a movement’s barrel cover, intended to help the mainspring unwind more consistently. The symbol thus links the brand’s visual identity to a practical element of watchmaking.
1907–1955: precision, world time and chronographs
The company presents the 1907 Chronomètre Royal as a milestone in precision and reliability. In 1932, it associated a world-time watch with Louis Cottier’s system, which displayed 24 time zones. In 1955, it introduced the Cornes de Vache chronograph; the Maison says the distinctive shape of its lugs gave the model its name. These are selected examples from the company’s heritage account, not a complete history of its catalogue.

The dates and descriptions in this table are drawn from the Maison’s official heritage account and timeline. They show how the story moves from individual technical achievements to collections that revisit or extend the brand’s design language.
How does that history connect to current collections?
Overseas and Historiques connect to the past in different ways. Overseas is a continuing collection whose official history begins in 1996, framed around travel and casual elegance. Historiques is explicitly devoted to contemporary reinterpretations of earlier models. Neither relationship makes the collections interchangeable: one carries forward a collection identity, while the other foregrounds historical references.

The Maison’s current Overseas collection page describes a 2016 reinvention. Its Historiques collection page presents the line as reinterpretations of heritage models. Both collections include different sizes and materials; individual models and regional availability can change, so consult the relevant regional product listing for current specifications.

Vacheron Constantin dates its origin to 1755 and describes its history as uninterrupted. Its current pages also use the figure “more than 270 years” to describe its watchmaking history. These are company statements anchored to the 1755 founding date, not an independently published industry comparison or a separate audit of every intervening year. The careful answer is that the Maison claims the distinction of being the oldest watch manufacturer with uninterrupted history, based on its own account.

The chronological record and the continuity superlative are related but not identical claims. The former identifies the company’s stated founding date and milestones; the latter depends on how “oldest” and “uninterrupted” are defined and verified. The official timeline and heritage pages are useful primary sources for what Vacheron Constantin says about itself, but they should be attributed when making the superlative claim.
