An inclined tourbillon changes the angle of the regulating mechanism, exploring how a watch’s orientation affects its rate. Revolution Watch’s Masters of Chronometry episode 3 traces the idea from a Boston pocket watch associated with Andrew Holden Potter to Walter Prendel’s more elaborate construction and modern wristwatch designs.

Why tilt a tourbillon?

Revolution frames the question around Abraham-Louis Breguet’s tourbillon and what happens when it is tilted: how might the regulating mechanism behave when a watch is laid flat, held at an angle or worn on a moving wrist? The episode describes the conventional tourbillon’s aim as averaging positional errors in a pocket watch held vertically, then considers how that idea applies as orientation changes. This is the episode’s account of the mechanism’s purpose, not a claim that every tourbillon improves everyday accuracy.

Andrew Holden Potter and the early inclined-balance design

The episode’s historical opening identifies Andrew Holden Potter, a Boston watchmaker, with an early inclined-balance tourbillon. It also warns that his work has been confused with that of Albert Henry Potter. The synopsis gives no date for Potter’s device, so its chronology should be understood as the episode presents it rather than assigned a more precise year.

Walter Prendel’s six-minute tourbillon

About seven decades later, according to the episode, Walter Prendel took the idea further with a six-minute tourbillon. Rather than inclining only the balance, his arrangement progressively inclined the escape wheel, pallet fork and balance at different angles. Revolution says Prendel trained under Alfred Helwig at the German Watchmaking School in Glashütte.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The distinction is structural: the Potter example is described as an inclined-balance tourbillon, while Prendel’s account involves three escapement components at successively different inclinations. The six-minute period is the rotation period named for Prendel’s tourbillon; the synopsis does not provide a comparable rotation period for the other examples it names.

Greubel and Forsey bring inclination to the wrist

Revolution presents Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey’s Double Tourbillon 30° as a modern application of inclination in a wristwatch. The episode reports that it scored 915 out of 1,000 points at the 2011 Concours International de Chronométrie. That is the one specific competition result in the synopsis; it should not be treated as a general accuracy figure for tourbillons or as a result shared by the other watches discussed.

What this history does—and does not—show

The through-line is a changing orientation of the regulating mechanism: from Potter’s inclined balance, through Prendel’s differently inclined escapement components, to wristwatch interpretations that the episode associates with multiple makers. These are distinct design approaches, not a controlled comparison of timekeeping. Apart from the Double Tourbillon 30° result reported for the 2011 competition, the synopsis supplies no comparable accuracy data, shared test protocol, prices or current availability for the named models.
