Adam Reeder’s pick is the white Casio F-108WH-1ACF: an inexpensive digital watch he says he would save in a disaster because it is convenient, familiar and fun to wear. His $22 was the price he reports paying in the past—not a current price—and his choice is a personal hypothetical, not a claim that the watch has been tested as emergency gear.
Why Reeder would keep this Casio
In his Time+Tide essay, Adam Reeder recounts finding a $30 Amazon gift card and looking for a watch under $30. After searching “Casio cheap watch,” he chose a white resin F-108WH-1ACF and says he paid $22. That purchase price is historical and specific to his account; it should not be read as today’s retail price.
Reeder liked the non-traditional white color and expected it to work with many outfits. He says he wears the watch for tennis, hiking and casual outings. Its light feel and low cost make him less worried about damaging it than he is with other watches. Those are his impressions and experiences, not results from controlled durability or performance testing.
What the related F-108WH model offers
Casio Canada’s official specifications for the related F-108WH-1A list a 44.4 × 42.6 × 10.3 mm case, 31 g weight, resin case and band, and resin glass. Its functions include a 1/100-second stopwatch, daily alarm, hourly signal, amber LED backlight, automatic calendar and 12/24-hour time format. Casio lists accuracy of ±30 seconds per month and an approximate seven-year life for the CR2016 battery. These specifications belong to the F-108WH-1A listing; they do not establish every detail of Reeder’s white F-108WH-1ACF.

Convenience is part of Reeder’s attachment: unlike a mechanical watch, he does not have to reset it regularly. The manufacturer’s approximate battery-life figure is useful context, but it is not a guarantee of how long any individual watch’s battery will last.
Is it suitable for swimming or disaster use?
Do not treat the F-108WH-1ACF as proven emergency equipment based on Reeder’s story. The essay describes his preferred everyday watch, not a survival test. Reeder says its water resistance is limited and that he wears another watch for swimming.

Casio Canada labels the related F-108WH-1A “Water Resistant” but gives no numerical depth rating on that page. Casio Japan describes daily-life water resistance for the different F-108WHC-7BJF variant. Neither listing establishes a swimming or diving rating for Reeder’s exact watch. Generic water-resistance wording is not enough to infer suitability for immersion, so check the documentation for the exact variant and avoid relying on it for water activities unless that documentation supports the use.

Reeder’s case for the watch is personal: it is convenient, nostalgic and enjoyable, and its modest purchase cost makes it easy for him to wear without much concern. He sums up his opinion this way: “It’s no nonsense, it does the job, and it looks great.” That explains why he values the watch; it does not turn his $22 anecdote into a current bargain or the watch into a tested disaster essential.
