Maverick wears a Porsche Design Chronograph 1 made by Orfina—the black, PVD-coated watch associated with the 1986 Top Gun. Property master Robbie Duncan said the same physical watch returned for Top Gun: Maverick (2022), although production also used duplicates.
What watch does Maverick wear in Top Gun: Maverick?
It is the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 manufactured by Orfina, commonly identified in connection with the films as reference 7176. It was not made by Porsche’s car division: Porsche Design developed the watch, while Orfina was the watchmaking firm that produced it. WatchTime’s history of Porsche Design watches describes Orfina as the first watchmaking firm contracted to manufacture them.
The Chronograph 1 dates to 1972. Its all-black appearance comes from a PVD-coated case; WatchReel characterizes it as the first all-black chronograph put into production. That “first” is WatchReel’s historical description, rather than a separately established industry standard. WatchReel’s guide to the Top Gun watches identifies the design and the film-associated 7176 reference.
Is it the same watch from the first Top Gun?
According to the sequel’s property master, yes. In a 2023 interview with Hodinkee, Robbie Duncan said Jerry Bruckheimer had kept the original watch in his safe and that it was the exact watch Tom Cruise wore in the first film. Duncan also said the production needed doubles and that the original went back to Bruckheimer after filming.

This is a named production insider’s account, not proof that the original watch appears in every shot. It does establish a strong continuity story: the watch worn in the 1986 film was brought back for the 2022 sequel, with duplicates available to production.
What does PVD mean on the Orfina?
PVD stands for physical vapor deposition, a coating process; here, the term refers to the black finish described for the Chronograph 1. The cited history identifies the case as PVD-coated but does not establish that every related reference used an identical coating process. On an individual vintage watch, the presence of a black case alone does not prove that its finish is original.

Why can two reference 7176 watches differ?
The reference does not guarantee one uniform movement configuration. WatchReel reports that 7176 batches could contain either a Valjoux 7750 or a Lemania 5100. Verify the movement in the particular watch rather than assuming it from the reference alone.
The Orfina era is also part of a broader Porsche Design watchmaking history. WatchTime says the Porsche Design Studio later partnered with IWC from 1978 to 1997. That context helps distinguish the early Orfina-made Chronograph 1 from later Porsche Design watches; it does not make the carmaker the manufacturer of this Orfina example.

Can you buy the exact watch Tom Cruise wore?
The production account says the screen-used watch returned to Bruckheimer after filming. A vintage watch offered for sale may be the same model or reference, but resemblance is not provenance. Do not treat an ordinary listing as the film prop without specific, credible documentation connecting that individual watch to the production.

- Movement and operation: Ask which movement is installed, whether the chronograph functions correctly, and whether service records are available.
