A collection can combine the pleasure of wearing a well-made object, fascination with mechanics and design, personal memories, learning, community, and the satisfaction of finding a wanted piece. Status or hopes of resale value may matter too, but neither explains every collector—or even every watch in one person’s collection.
What makes watch collecting appealing?
There is no single psychological explanation. In a 2021 interview with Time+Tide, Deakin University psychologist Richard Moulding described collecting as something people do because they are passionate about it and enjoy it. Watches bring several kinds of pleasure together: they are useful, intricate, visible, wearable, and rich in design and history.
That mix means two collectors can value the same watch for different reasons. One may care about the movement; another may love its shape on the wrist; a third may associate it with a milestone or a person. These motives can overlap and change over time. They are useful ways to understand collecting, not a scientific ranking or fixed set of collector types.
Different motives can coexist
| What draws someone in | What it can mean |
|---|---|
| Mechanics and craft | Interest in how a movement works, how a watch is constructed, or how complications and precision are achieved. |
| Design and wearing pleasure | Enjoyment of a watch’s aesthetics, materials, style, and feel on the wrist. |
| Personal meaning | A watch may mark a gift, milestone, inheritance, or memory. |
| Learning and community | Discovering brands, movements, and horological history, then sharing knowledge and enthusiasm with others. |
| The search | Working toward a specific reference or historical example can turn collecting into a concrete pursuit. |
| Status or resale expectations | A watch may carry social meaning, or a buyer may consider its potential resale value. Neither motive is universal, and future value is not assured. |
Watches can become part of identity and memory
A watch is often worn where its owner can see and feel it throughout the day, and where other people may notice it. That makes it an unusually personal object: it can express taste while also serving as a reminder of a person or moment. Moulding put the identity connection simply: “Objects become part of our identity.”

Jewelers Mutual’s 2025 article describes watches as expressions of personal style and as possible markers of milestones such as graduations, promotions, and anniversaries. These examples help explain the emotional role a watch can take on, but they are not proof that all owners buy watches for those reasons. The meaning may come from the person who gave it, the occasion it commemorates, or the memories accumulated through years of wearing it.
Learning and the hunt add a sense of progress
For some collectors, the object is only part of the reward. Learning to distinguish movements, references, brands, and periods gives the hobby a growing body of knowledge. A specific watch can then become a goal: identify it, understand its history, locate an example, and decide whether it belongs in the collection.

Time+Tide’s feature connects the thrill of the chase with the desire for scarce watches. A broader social-psychological review of collecting suggests that attainable goals and feedback about progress can support a sense of self. Taken together, these ideas make the hunt a plausible source of satisfaction, though a difficult search can be frustrating as well as exciting. Scarcity alone does not make a watch meaningful to every collector.
Collector communities offer belonging—and can create pressure
Watch communities give enthusiasts places to ask questions, compare discoveries, share photographs, and pass along knowledge. That shared attention can make a private interest feel like belonging to a group.

A 2014 University of Warwick doctoral thesis examining a particular luxury-watch network describes emotional attachment, pride, achievement, self-expression, and status within that community. It provides qualitative detail about that setting, not a portrait of all watch collectors. Community can validate an interest, but recognition and comparison may also influence what people want to own.
Status and investment are possible influences, not universal explanations
Some watches communicate wealth, taste, expertise, or membership in a social circle. The status dimension has a commercial history, too: Harvard Business School research by Ryan Raffaelli documents how Swiss watchmakers repositioned mechanical watches around luxury, beauty, craftsmanship, and status, even as quartz watches offered greater accuracy. This is useful context for understanding the stories attached to watches; it does not establish what motivates every buyer.

Resale expectations may enter a collector’s decisions, but the available watch-specific commentary does not show that financial return is the principal motive for collectors as a group. Nor does it establish that watches generally appreciate. A watch can be bought for its appearance or meaning and later be sold; that possibility does not make it an investment, and an expected resale price is not a guaranteed outcome.

Jewelers Mutual Group reports that 54% of watch collectors cited the feeling of wearing a nice watch as a primary driver, and 83% owned multiple watches. The company says its survey was conducted online in June 2025 among more than 1,500 U.S. adults aged 18 or older who owned watches and were responsible for household insurance decisions.

Those figures offer a snapshot of that insurer-sponsored panel, not representative estimates for every watch owner. They also do not show why each individual owns multiple watches or prove that wearing pleasure is the leading motive across all collectors. The strongest conclusion is narrower: in this particular survey, wearing pleasure was commonly cited, and multiple-watch ownership was common among respondents.
When does collecting become a problem?
Collecting is not inherently harmful, and ordinary enthusiasm should not be treated as a diagnosis. In a 1995 article in the Journal of Economic Psychology, Russell W. Belk drew on depth interviews with 200 collectors and described collecting as commonly beneficial, while also noting extreme cases that can become addictive or dysfunctional for individuals or households. This is general collecting research, not a watch-specific estimate of how often difficulties occur.
A useful personal check is whether collecting remains compatible with your finances, responsibilities, and relationships. If acquisition feels difficult to control or is causing harm, the relevant issue is not how many watches you own by itself, but the effect collecting is having on your life.
