AirPods Pro 2 can use Apple’s Hearing Aid feature as a self-fitting hearing aid for adults 18 or older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, where the feature is available. To set it up, connect AirPods Pro 2 with current firmware to an up-to-date iPhone or iPad, then use Apple’s Hearing Test or a professional audiogram in the AirPods’ Hearing Assistance settings.
After setup, make small adjustments over time. Environmental sound amplification works in Transparency mode; Media Assist handles supported music, video, and calls across noise-control modes.
Before you begin: what AirPods Pro 2 can and cannot do
Apple’s Hearing Aid feature is hearing-assistance software that works with compatible AirPods Pro 2 hardware. Apple says it is intended for people 18 years or older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. It is not a diagnosis, a cure, or a universal substitute for an audiologist or ear, nose, and throat specialist. People with more substantial hearing needs may not receive enough benefit from a self-fitting feature.
Apple offers related but distinct features:
- Hearing Aid: personalizes environmental sound amplification. It operates in Transparency mode.
- Media Assist: applies hearing-based adjustments to supported music, videos, and calls. These adjustments work across noise-control modes.
- Live Listen: uses an iPhone or iPad as a remote microphone and sends that sound to the AirPods. It is not the same as Hearing Aid.
Hearing Aid amplification and the device’s media volume are separate controls. Hearing Protection and Headphone Accommodations also have different purposes.

What you need
Compatible earbuds and Apple device
You need Apple AirPods Pro 2, not ordinary AirPods or an earlier AirPods Pro model. You also need a compatible iPhone or iPad running the latest available software. Apple requires the latest AirPods firmware as well.
Availability and the version of the feature shown can vary by country or region because of regulatory conditions. Check Apple’s current availability information for your location. If the controls are missing or look different, check the feature version in AirPods settings as well as your device and AirPods software.
Charge and connect the AirPods
Charge the AirPods, pair them with your iPhone or iPad, wear them, and make sure they are connected. Apple’s current setup guidance calls for the latest firmware and device software. Firmware 7B19 or later was the historical minimum for enabling the feature with iOS 18.1 or iPadOS 18.1; it should not be treated as the current requirement.
Check whether AirPods are appropriate for you first
Do not treat a self-fitting feature as the first response to warning signs. Arrange medical evaluation for sudden or rapidly changing hearing loss, hearing that fluctuates or is substantially worse in one ear, pain, dizziness, fluid or blood from the ear, or a suspected foreign object or substantial earwax blockage. Professional evaluation is also appropriate if symptoms are unclear, a result seems implausible, or the AirPods provide little benefit.

People who suspect severe or profound hearing loss should consult a hearing professional rather than continuing to increase amplification. AirPods cannot determine the medical cause of hearing loss.
Step 1: Connect and open Hearing Assistance
- Charge your AirPods Pro 2 and pair them with your iPhone or iPad.
- Wear the AirPods and confirm that they are connected.
- Open Settings and tap the AirPods name.
- Open Hearing Health, then Hearing Assistance. Labels or nesting may vary slightly by software version.
- Tap Set Up Hearing Assistance.
Step 2: Choose a Hearing Test or audiogram
You can personalize Hearing Aid with Apple’s Hearing Test or with an existing audiogram from a hearing professional. Use the Apple test if you do not have a professional result and can take it in a quiet room. Use a prior result if you already have an audiogram or prefer professional input; Apple’s setup supports scanning one with the device camera or entering it manually.
| Route | Best suited to | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Hearing Test | Someone without a saved professional audiogram who can test in quiet conditions | The test takes about five minutes, classifies hearing loss, and recommends next steps. |
| Professional audiogram | Someone who already has a hearing professional’s result or wants to use that result | Select a saved result or add one by scanning it or entering it manually. |
Take Apple’s Hearing Test
Take the test in a quiet room. Noise can interfere with the result. Keep the AirPods seated and follow the onscreen instructions, responding when you hear the tones.
- In Hearing Assistance setup, choose Take a Hearing Test if prompted.
- Follow the instructions and complete the test without moving the AirPods.
- Review the result and recommended next steps.
Apple saves the result in the Health app. You can export the audiogram as a PDF to share with a hearing healthcare professional.

Use a professional audiogram
- In setup, choose Use a Prior Test Result.
- Select a saved result, or tap Add Hearing Test Result.
- Scan the audiogram with your iPhone or iPad camera, or enter it manually, then follow the prompts.
An audiogram can personalize the AirPods, but using one does not remove the value of professional care when you have warning signs, unclear symptoms, or inadequate benefit.
Step 3: Turn on Hearing Aid
- After selecting a test result, tap Set Up Hearing Aid.
- Tap Get Started, then Next, following the prompts shown on your device.
- Tap Turn On Hearing Aid.
Depending on the test result, Apple may instead prompt you to turn on Media Assist. Follow the option presented for your result.
Apple stores Hearing Aid settings on the AirPods. The latest settings can continue to work when the paired iPhone or iPad is not nearby, but the AirPods need charge to operate properly.
Step 4: Make small, deliberate adjustments
Apple recommends making small adjustments over time while you get used to the feature. Environmental amplification requires Transparency mode. Conversation Boost can focus the AirPods on a person speaking directly in front of you.

| Control | What it changes | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Amplification | The level of surrounding sound | Adjust gradually to a comfortable level; this works in Transparency mode. |
| Balance | The relative level in the left and right ear | Use it for a modest left-right adjustment. Persistent one-sided difficulty warrants professional evaluation. |
| Tone | The character of amplified sound | Make small changes and give yourself time to assess each one. |
| Conversation Boost | Focuses listening on a person speaking in front of you | Use it for face-to-face speech rather than expecting it to make every voice in a group equally clear. |
Hearing Aid amplification and media volume are separate. Media Assist applies hearing-based adjustments to supported music, video, and calls across noise-control modes.

Conversation and background noise
For a one-to-one conversation, face the speaker and keep the AirPods seated. Conversation Boost may help focus on someone speaking directly in front of you, but it is not a guarantee of clear speech in a crowded room.
Music, video, and calls
Use Media Assist for hearing-based adjustments to supported music, videos, and calls. It is separate from environmental sound amplification in Hearing Aid.
Battery and cleaning
Hearing Aid requires charged AirPods. Keep the case charged if you depend on the feature during the day. Clean AirPods Pro 2 according to Apple’s instructions; debris can affect fit and perceived performance. Avoid pushing liquid or debris into speaker openings. If you buy AirPods Pro cleaning supplies, verify the method is safe and follow Apple’s instructions.

Troubleshooting
Hearing Aid is missing
- Confirm you have AirPods Pro 2 and a compatible iPhone or iPad.
- Connect the AirPods and install the latest available device software and AirPods firmware.
- Check Apple’s availability information for your region and check the feature version in AirPods settings.
The Hearing Test will not start or the result seems implausible
- Move to a genuinely quiet room and follow the test prompts.
- Confirm the AirPods are connected, charged, and seated properly.
- If the result still does not match your experience, do not compensate by substantially increasing amplification. Review the result with a hearing professional or use a professional audiogram.
Speech remains difficult
Try Conversation Boost for focused face-to-face speech and make small adjustments. If you continue to struggle, suspect more substantial hearing loss, or develop discomfort, seek professional advice rather than continually increasing amplification.
