The Story Behind Bremont and Martin-Baker Watches

Bremont’s MB watches grew from a partnership with ejection-seat maker Martin-Baker. Here’s the timeline, seat-inspired design, maker-described tests and the MBI eligibility rule.

Bremont’s Martin-Baker watches grew from a collaboration with an aircraft company known for its ejection seats—not simply a co-branded watch. Martin-Baker approached Bremont in 2007; Bremont dates the formal partnership announcement and first MBI development to February 2009. The resulting line draws on seat hardware and testing, while its original MBI remains restricted to pilots who have ejected from a Martin-Baker seat.

How Martin-Baker became an ejection-seat maker

Martin-Baker’s story began in aviation. Martin’s Aircraft Works was established in 1929, and Sir James Martin and Capt Valentine Baker founded Martin-Baker Aircraft Company Ltd in 1934. The company’s focus shifted toward pilot escape systems after Baker was killed in an MB3 test flight in 1942. Martin-Baker’s history says the loss shaped Martin’s determination to improve pilot safety. (Martin-Baker’s history)

The move into ejection seats unfolded over several years. Martin-Baker says design work began in 1944 and its first live test took place in 1945. Its history separately describes Bernard Lynch’s first mid-flight test in 1946; that is a distinct milestone, not the same event as the 1945 live test. J.O. Lancaster became the first person saved by a Martin-Baker seat in 1949. (Martin-Baker’s history)

Martin-Baker marked 7,500 lives saved in 2016. Its history page currently displays a figure of more than 7,700 aircrew members saved, without assigning that total a publication year. (Martin-Baker’s history)

How the Bremont partnership began

Bremont says Martin-Baker approached it in 2007 to create a watch worthy of the Martin-Baker name. That approach preceded the formal partnership: Bremont’s chronology dates the announcement to February 2009, when the teams designed and tested the first MBI. Keeping those dates separate explains why accounts of the collaboration may refer to either 2007 or 2009. (Bremont’s Martin-Baker partnership page; Bremont’s chronology)

Bremont presents the relationship as a transfer of Martin-Baker’s expertise in testing, materials and design into a watchmaking project. The company says the MB was developed from scratch around performance, durability and reliability principles associated with its partner’s seats. These are Bremont’s descriptions of the collaboration, rather than independently published engineering findings. (Bremont’s Martin-Baker partnership page)

What the ejection seat contributes to the watch design

The seat influence appears in specific details, not just the name. Bremont’s chronology says the knurled effect on the watch’s barrel echoes components on a Martin-Baker seat. The yellow-and-black loop at the end of a seconds hand references the seat’s ejection pull handle. Bremont also describes the MBIII as adding a non-chronograph GMT movement. These features are tied to the models and design history Bremont describes; they should not be assumed to appear on every MB variant. (Bremont’s chronology)

What Bremont says the MB watches were tested against

Bremont says the MB range underwent tests associated with ejection and aircraft environments. Its descriptions concern particular test setups, not general performance limits or a guarantee that every model has identical specifications.

  • Vibration: Bremont says a watch worn by a dummy was shaken to simulate a 30-year aircraft life. That is the maker’s description of the test, not an independently audited lifetime claim. (Bremont’s Martin-Baker partnership page)

A separate Bremont account of testing for the MB Viper describes a zero/zero test in which a manikin was propelled from zero to 120 feet in two seconds and experienced forces up to 15G. This is a Viper test-program detail, not a specification for every MB watch. (Bremont’s MB Viper article)

MBI and MB Meteor: who can get each watch?

The MBI has an eligibility rule that makes it different from an ordinary public-release watch. Martin-Baker says it is available only to people who have ejected from a Martin-Baker seat. Its page describes a red aluminium barrel, personal engraving and a Tie Club membership number; applicants are directed to apply for Tie Club membership before submitting a request to Bremont.
