The Grand Seiko 57GS Self-Dater is a hand-wound mechanical watch introduced in 1964 as the second generation of Grand Seiko. Its name points to the date display and the Caliber 5722 movement family: a proprietary corrector let the wearer advance the calendar without moving the hands through a full day. The model’s original water-resistance specification was equivalent to 50 meters (5 atm), but that historical figure says nothing about the condition of a surviving watch today.
What is the Grand Seiko 57GS Self-Dater?
Seiko dates the Self-Dater to 1964 and identifies it as the second generation of Grand Seiko. It was a hand-wound mechanical watch with a calendar, adding practical features to the line’s early design. Seiko says the model was chiefly fitted with Caliber 5722, which is why it is also known as the 57GS. The Seiko Museum’s GS Self Dater history and Seiko’s 2013 historical reissue announcement document those basics.
What does “Self-Dater” mean?
“Self-Dater” refers to the watch’s date display and its integrated, proprietary fast-forwarding date corrector. Rather than advancing the calendar by turning the hands through a complete 24-hour cycle, the wearer could use the corrector to move the date forward more directly. That calendar mechanism is the defining practical distinction conveyed by the name; it is not an automatic-winding feature.
How did the 57GS evolve?
The available historical accounts identify more than one movement designation, but they do not provide a complete reference-by-reference catalog. The following is a limited overview, not a definitive production chronology.

| Variant or period | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| 5722A | The GS9 Club Singapore history page associates the 5722A Self-Dater with a quick-set date function in the 1964–1967 Self-Dater era. GS9 Club Singapore’s 57GS history |
| 5722B | The same GS9 Club page identifies a 5722B variant and associates the Self-Dater with Grand Seiko’s first use of Zaratsu polishing. It attributes a higher frequency to later development, but the overview does not establish a full reference-level timeline. GS9 Club Singapore’s 57GS history |
| Later naming | Seiko says the frequency was later increased and the model was sold as GS Calendar. The sources cited here do not establish the exact reference or date for every change. Seiko’s 2013 announcement |
The Zaratsu attribution comes from a Grand Seiko community history page, not a quantified independent manufacturing study. For a specific watch, confirm its reference and movement against a model-specific record rather than assuming every 57GS detail applies to every example.
What was its original water resistance?
The Seiko Museum gives the Self-Dater an original water-resistance specification equivalent to 50 meters (5 atm). Seiko’s 2013 announcement describes the increase as an improvement from the earlier 3-atmosphere specification to 5 atmospheres. These are period design specifications, not a present-day performance rating for a vintage watch.

- WATCH DIAMETER – 39.5 mm.
Decades-old seals and the condition of an individual case can differ substantially from the watch as made. Without inspection and an appropriate water-resistance test of that particular example, the historic figure cannot establish that it is safe to swim with or expose to water.
How does the 57GS relate to Grand Seiko’s accuracy standards?
Grand Seiko established its own mechanical-watch standard in 1966 at +6 to -3 seconds per day, then revised it in 1969 to +5 to -3 seconds per day. Grand Seiko’s history of its mechanical standard describes those historical targets. They do not state how accurately a particular surviving 57GS runs now; current performance depends on the individual watch and cannot be inferred from its age or original designation.

What should a buyer verify on an individual vintage example?
The model history identifies the family, but it cannot establish a particular watch’s authenticity, originality, service history, current accuracy, or condition. Those questions require evidence about the individual example, not a conclusion drawn from the 57GS name alone.

- Ask for clear photographs and the exact case and movement designations, then compare them with reliable records for that specific reference.
- Request documentation of service and any replaced or non-original components; the general historical sources do not settle originality or service status.
- Have a qualified watchmaker assess operation and condition. Do not treat the model’s historical accuracy standard as a prediction of present accuracy.
- Do not rely on the original 50-meter-equivalent specification as evidence of current water resistance; require a current test if water exposure matters.
