Top 7 Navigation Apps for Samsung Galaxy Watches (2026)

Google Maps is the best everyday pick for Wear OS Galaxy Watches. Compare outdoor route planners, GPX tools, phone-mirroring companions, and standalone options.

Google Maps is the best default for city directions on a Wear OS Galaxy Watch. For hiking and cycling, look at komoot or Outdooractive; Locus Map Watch suits experienced GPX users. If you need navigation on the watch without a phone nearby, compare the standalone options GPS Navigation [WearOS&Watch3] and Wear GPS hiking maps. These apps are not interchangeable: some plan routes, some follow them, and some only relay directions from your phone.

This shortlist is for Wear OS Galaxy Watches, principally Galaxy Watch4 and newer. Older Galaxy Watch, Gear, and Active models running Tizen have fewer current choices. Samsung directs Wear OS users to Google Play for apps; its Galaxy Store is not available on those watches. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch app guidance explains the platform distinction.

Quick comparison: which Galaxy Watch navigation app fits?

App Best for What the watch does Offline capability Phone requirement Cost model
Google Maps City walking, driving, cycling, and general directions Searches destinations and shows navigation Offline maps support driving directions, with limits Phone, LTE, or supported offline use depending on mode Core Maps is free; LTE service may cost extra
komoot Planned hiking and cycling routes Follows synced outdoor tours Unlocked regions support offline maps and route use Bluetooth phone connection required during current Samsung-watch navigation First region free; additional regions and options are paid
Outdooractive Hiking route discovery and outdoor routes Displays directions and map as supported by the app mode Plan- and feature-dependent; confirm the current app’s behavior Phone is used to select or start routes Plan-based; current price varies
Locus Map Watch Advanced outdoor mapping and GPX tracks Displays maps, position, tracks, waypoints, and route prompts Depends on map setup in the phone app Bluetooth connection to Locus on the phone Basic and paid map or Premium features; check current store terms
GPS Navigation [WearOS&Watch3] Dedicated watch-side navigation Provides map, maneuver, and route features Listing advertises offline maps; Pro unlock may be required Listing describes standalone operation; setup and license transfer may still involve a phone Free install with paid Pro license
Navigation Wear Simple turn prompts from phone navigation Relays smartphone directions; not a full map navigator No meaningful standalone offline mode established Phone navigation required Free install with paid customization
Wear GPS hiking maps Standalone hiking and prepared GPX routes Shows maps, route, waypoints, and off-route alerts Downloadable maps and GPX following are listed No phone required during navigation after setup Paid app; Google Play listing showed $2.49 in July 2026

“Offline maps” does not automatically mean offline search, route calculation, or rerouting. Likewise, following a route planned on a phone is different from searching and navigating independently on the watch.

Wear OS: Galaxy Watch4 and later

Current Wear OS navigation apps are the relevant options for Galaxy Watch4 and later generations. Install watch apps through Google Play on the watch, and confirm that the listing names Wear OS or Watch support. Features can still vary by watch generation, available storage, app version, region, and whether you have a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi or LTE model.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Older Tizen Galaxy Watch, Gear, and Active models

Do not assume a Wear OS recommendation works on an older Tizen watch. komoot says Samsung Tizen support has been discontinued: an existing installation may keep working, but reinstalling or updating is not assured. komoot’s Samsung watch requirements cover this limitation. Check the exact model and app availability before relying on any legacy setup.

1. Google Maps: best overall for everyday navigation

Google Maps is the strongest starting point for most Galaxy Watch owners because it covers walking, driving, cycling, and public transit, and supports destination search and watch navigation. It can also launch on the watch when navigation starts on the phone.

What works on the watch

Google documents navigation without the phone nearby on Wear OS 3 and newer: offline maps support driving directions, while LTE can support driving, walking, and biking. Public-transit directions are available, but they do not provide the same full voice and haptic turn-by-turn guidance as the other modes. Offline use is not the full online Maps experience. Google’s Wear OS Maps instructions detail supported modes and limits.

Set it up

  1. Open Google Maps on the watch.
  2. Search for a destination with the keyboard or microphone.
  3. Choose a transport mode and start navigation.
  4. For automatic watch launch, open Maps on the watch, go to Settings → Auto-launch, and enable the travel modes you want.
  5. Enable location on the phone and allow Maps location access; keep Maps notifications enabled if directions should remain active. Samsung’s setup guidance covers phone location and permissions.

Trade-offs

  • Offline maps are documented for driving directions; LTE expands phone-free use to driving, walking, and biking when cellular service is active.
  • Turning off “Show on phone” can make watch updates faster and use watch-generated audio, but Google warns this uses more battery.
  • An LTE watch needs an activated, compatible carrier plan and signal; LTE hardware alone does not supply data.

2. komoot: best for hiking and cycling routes

komoot is built for planned outdoor tours rather than quick city errands. Its route profiles and tour information cover hiking, road cycling, mountain biking, running, and walking, with details such as distance, elevation, difficulty, and surface. Planned routes can sync to a Wear OS watch for turn guidance.

Phone and offline requirements

komoot’s current Samsung-watch instructions require a Bluetooth connection between phone and watch during navigation, so it is not a phone-free solution on a Galaxy Watch. It requires Wear OS 2 or later, an Android phone running Android 8 or later, Google Play access, the same komoot account on phone and watch, and location permissions. Offline regions are available after the relevant area is unlocked; the first region is free, while extra regions, bundles, and the World Pack are paid. Prices vary by market and offer. See Samsung watch setup, Wear OS phone connection requirements, and komoot for Samsung watches.

Choose it if

You want to plan and follow outdoor routes with trail-oriented details. Choose something else for car navigation or if the defining requirement is leaving the phone behind.

3. Outdooractive: best for discovering hiking routes

Outdooractive is a route-discovery and outdoor-navigation option for hikers and recreational cyclists. Its documented workflow uses the phone to find or start a route, then the watch for directions; the watch can show a map while near the phone. The exact watch display and offline features depend on the current app mode and plan, so verify them in the live app rather than assuming it is fully phone-free. Outdooractive’s Wear OS guide describes the phone-and-watch workflow and a Wear OS update rolling out in October 2025.

It is a better fit for route discovery than direct destination search from the wrist, driving, or simple free city directions. The source documents a substantial app update; available features may vary with the installed version.

4. Locus Map Watch: best for advanced maps and GPX control

Locus Map Watch is an extension for Locus Map 4 and Locus Map Classic aimed at users who want more than a basic turn prompt. It can display, zoom, and browse maps; show GPS position; control track recording; work with waypoints and track statistics; and present visual route-navigation commands.

Setup dependency

Install Locus Map on the phone, install Locus Map Watch on the phone, add the watch extension, and keep Bluetooth enabled. The developer says the Google Play edition of Locus is required for this extension; the Amazon Store edition is not compatible with this setup. Offline maps depend on how map data is configured in the phone app, so do not treat the watch extension itself as a standalone offline navigator. See the Locus Map Watch listing and Locus Map listing.

The flexibility is useful for GPX users, hiking, cycling, and geocaching, but setup is more involved than Google Maps and map or Premium features may be paid.

5. GPS Navigation [WearOS&Watch3]: best dedicated standalone option

The Google Play listing describes this as a standalone navigation app that can work without phone software. Advertised features include turn-by-turn commands in 23 languages, offline maps, map and maneuver views, voice search, route tracking, and geocoding. These are listing claims; available evidence does not establish comparative map quality, battery life, or long-term maintenance performance. Check the current Google Play listing for compatibility and Pro terms.

6. Navigation Wear: best for simple phone-to-watch turn alerts

Navigation Wear sends directions generated by phone navigation to a smartwatch. It is a companion, not an independent route calculator or full-map navigator. To use it, install the phone app and watch companion, open the companion as needed, then start navigation in Google Maps on the phone. The Play listing describes the workflow and premium customization.

Pick it when you want glanceable prompts rather than a map on your wrist. It depends on phone navigation and offers in-app purchases; check the live regional listing for current premium terms.

7. Wear GPS hiking maps: best for budget standalone GPX following

Wear GPS hiking maps is a Wear OS-focused option for following prepared routes. Its listing advertises standalone operation, online and downloadable offline maps, GPX import from Google Drive, watch storage, or phone, off-route vibration and sound alerts, waypoints, altitude and coordinates, and route reversal. It is more suited to hiking and GPX following than driving, transit, or broad place search. See the current Google Play listing for supported watches and features.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

The listing showed a $2.49 purchase in July 2026; that is a dated store price, not a guaranteed current or universal price. The listing identified English and Spanish support. The app has a small install base, so treat it as a focused alternative rather than an established market leader.

Choose by the trip you actually take

  • Walking around a city or driving: Google Maps.
  • Hiking or cycling on planned routes: komoot for tour planning and sport profiles; Outdooractive for route discovery.
  • Managing GPX tracks, waypoints, and map controls: Locus Map Watch if you are comfortable setting up its phone app and Bluetooth link.
  • Navigation without a phone during the route: compare GPS Navigation [WearOS&Watch3] for general navigation with Wear GPS hiking maps for prepared hiking routes. Confirm offline maps and licensing on your specific watch before setting out.
  • Seeing phone directions on your wrist: Navigation Wear, if you only need prompts.
  • Using a Tizen Galaxy Watch: verify support for your exact model; the Wear OS list above does not automatically apply.

Make phone, LTE, and offline requirements explicit

A Bluetooth/Wi-Fi watch commonly relies on a nearby phone for live data, route calculation, or app synchronization. An LTE model can use cellular data away from the phone only if the carrier plan is active, coverage is available, and the app supports watch-side data. A downloaded map can reduce the need for live data, but GPS only determines position: it does not provide map tiles, place search, routing, or recalculation by itself.

Before a route, distinguish these capabilities: offline map display, offline following of an already prepared route, offline place search, offline route calculation, and offline rerouting. An app may offer one without offering the others. Phone-based route planning, account sign-in, Bluetooth sync, or a separate watch map download may still be needed.

Install and troubleshoot before relying on navigation

  1. On the watch, open Google Play Store and confirm the app offers a watch version; a compatible phone app alone is not enough.
  2. Install the companion phone app where required, sign in to the same account on both devices, and allow location access on the phone and watch.
  3. For companion apps, confirm Bluetooth is connected. For phone-relay apps, allow the required notification access and keep navigation running on the phone.
  4. Download the relevant map region or route to the device the app actually uses. Do not assume a phone download is available to the watch.
  5. Test a short route with the intended transport mode and connection setup before relying on it outdoors.

If directions do not appear, check phone and watch location settings, app permissions, notification access, Bluetooth status, account match, downloaded map location, and whether battery optimization is stopping a companion app. For Maps, verify that notifications are enabled and that the phone’s location service is on. If you need live data away from the phone, confirm both LTE activation and signal rather than assuming the watch’s LTE hardware is sufficient.
