Yes, you can swim, snorkel and undertake ordinary recreational scuba with the Tudor Pelagos 39 (reference M25407N-0001) when its crown is completely screwed down and the watch is in good condition. Tudor specifies the 39 mm grade 2 titanium diver as “Waterproof to 200m (660 ft).” That figure is a controlled water-resistance rating, not a promise that an aging watch can safely be taken to exactly 200 meters, nor evidence that it is approved for saturation diving. Seal condition, crown position, impacts, servicing and the forces created by moving water all affect real-world protection.
What does 200 meters mean on the Pelagos 39?
The 200-meter marking identifies the pressure class Tudor assigns to this model under a diver-watch requirements-and-test framework. ISO 6425:2018, which ISO confirmed remains current after its 2024 review, specifies requirements and test methods for divers’ watches designed to withstand diving to at least 100 meters. Tudor publishes the Pelagos 39 result as 200 meters (660 feet), so its stated rating is twice that minimum depth threshold.

A crown left unscrewed, a damaged gasket, a caseback opened during service, a hard impact or deterioration from age can reduce water resistance. Rapid movement through water can also create pressure forces that are not represented by a simple still-depth number.
The Pelagos 39 is a compact, traditional mechanical diver’s watch rather than a piece of specialist saturation-diving equipment. Tudor’s product specification identifies a 39 mm grade 2 titanium case and 200-meter waterproofness; its professional Pelagos models have functions intended for more specialised work that are not documented for the Pelagos 39.

Can I swim or snorkel with a Tudor Pelagos 39?
Yes, provided the crown is fully screwed down and the watch is sound. Swimming and snorkeling create substantially less exposure than technical or deep professional diving, and the model’s 200-meter rating gives ample margin for those activities when the watch is operated correctly.
Before entering the water
- Press the crown toward the case and screw it down completely. Tudor’s manual states: “Once this is fully screwed down against the case, your watch is guaranteed waterproof.”
- Check that the crown is not visibly raised, cross-threaded or difficult to turn. Do not force a damaged crown.
- Do not operate the crown while it is unscrewed or while the watch is underwater.
- If the watch has recently been opened, struck, or has been out of maintenance for a long time, arrange a water-resistance check before a demanding swim or dive.
In the pool, lake or sea
The watch can remain on the wrist for normal swimming and surface snorkeling. Avoid treating the rating as permission to expose a questionable or damaged watch: water resistance depends on the seals and crown system being intact, not just on the number printed in the specification.

Is 200-meter water resistance enough for recreational scuba?
It is a reasonable rating for ordinary recreational scuba within your training, dive plan and equipment limits. Tudor describes the Pelagos 39 as a traditional mechanical divers’ watch and states that it meets diver-watch standards. The watch’s unidirectional bezel provides a way to track elapsed dive time, but it is only one timing aid and does not replace a dive computer, depth gauge or the procedures required by your training agency.
What the watch contributes
- The 200-meter specification provides a substantial pressure rating for recreational depths.
- The unidirectional bezel can be aligned with the minute hand before descent to monitor elapsed time. Because it turns only in the direction that makes remaining time appear shorter, an accidental knock cannot make the remaining estimate look safer than it is.
- The mechanical display remains readable as a conventional dive-watch indication, subject to the limits of your visibility and other equipment.
What the watch does not replace
A watch rating does not certify a complete diving system or make an unplanned descent safe. Use the depth, decompression and gas-management equipment required for your certification and dive profile. The bezel is a backup timing reference, not a substitute for the instruments and buddy procedures used in scuba training.

Does 200 meters mean I can dive to 200 meters?
No. The number is not a personal depth guarantee. It describes the result of a controlled test and requirements framework for a watch in suitable condition. A real dive adds variables that a static label cannot capture: seal wear, crown position, previous shocks, temperature changes, servicing history and dynamic pressure from swimming or descending quickly.
Even if a particular watch has never been damaged, there is no practical reason for a recreational diver to treat the published figure as a target depth. Dive within the limits of your training, certification, gas supply and other equipment. For professional or specialised operations, confirm that the exact watch model has the required approvals rather than inferring them from the 200-meter marking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs the Pelagos 39 suitable for saturation or professional diving?
Do not infer saturation-diving approval from “200 m.” The available Tudor material distinguishes the Pelagos 39 from Pelagos models equipped for specialised professional diving, and it does not document saturation certification for the 39 mm model. Saturation operations can involve helium exposure, prolonged pressure, decompression procedures and equipment requirements beyond ordinary recreational scuba.
If your work involves saturation or another specialised commercial profile, use a watch whose manufacturer documentation explicitly covers that operation. The Pelagos 39’s published rating alone does not establish that it has the necessary helium, decompression or professional-dive certification.

How should I use the Pelagos 39 crown before and during a dive?
The screw-down crown is the critical user-controlled water-resistance point. Tudor’s manual says the watch is guaranteed waterproof once the crown is fully screwed down against the case.
- Stop in a dry place. Do not unscrew or adjust the crown at the water’s edge if spray or droplets can enter the opening.
- Set the watch while it is dry. Complete any time or date adjustment before entering the water.
- Push the crown inward. Keep it aligned with the case rather than leaving it extended.
- Screw it down fully. Turn it until it is seated firmly against the case. Do not force it if the threads feel rough or fail to engage.
- Leave it alone underwater. Never manipulate an unscrewed crown during a swim or dive.
- Afterward, inspect it again. If the crown feels loose, gritty or unusually difficult to operate, stop using the watch in water until it has been checked.
How do I rinse a Pelagos 39 after salt water?
Tudor’s instruction is direct: “Salt water: Always rinse your watch with fresh water.” Rinsing removes salt crystals that can remain around the crown, bezel, case and bracelet and helps prevent residue from building up as the water evaporates.
- After leaving the sea, rinse the watch with clean fresh water.
- Use a soft brush occasionally with soapy water when cleaning a waterproof case and a metal, rubber or fabric bracelet, following Tudor’s care guidance.
- Rinse away soap and salt, then dry the watch with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Do not use abrasive tools or force debris into the crown area.
- If the watch was exposed while the crown was open, or if condensation appears under the crystal, keep it out of water and seek service promptly.
Fresh-water rinsing is especially important after ocean use, but it does not repair a failed seal. Cleaning and a water-resistance check are separate needs.
What strap and wetsuit options come with the Pelagos 39?
The watch is supplied with a titanium bracelet that includes a diver’s extension and with a black rubber strap. Tudor documents a 25 mm bracelet extension and a rubber extension piece that can lengthen the strap by up to 110 mm for use over a wetsuit.

| Component | Published specification | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Titanium bracelet | Diver’s extension; 25 mm extension documented by Tudor | Allows the bracelet to fit over a thinner wetsuit layer or adjust for dive use. |
| Black rubber strap | Extension piece lengthens it by up to 110 mm | Provides additional circumference for a thicker wetsuit. |
| Case | 39 mm grade 2 titanium | Compact case size with the stated 200 m waterproofness rating. |
The extension changes fit, not the watch’s pressure rating. Keep the crown fully secured and make sure the strap or bracelet is properly closed before entering the water.
How does the Pelagos 39 compare across common water activities?
| Activity | Pressure or depth exposure | Crown and seal condition | Timing equipment | Maintenance status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swimming | Surface activity with changing water movement | Crown fully screwed down; watch sound | No dive timing normally required | Use only when seals and case are in good condition |
| Snorkeling | Surface swimming with short submersion | Crown fully screwed down; no visible damage | Usually no dedicated timing instrument | Check after impacts or case opening |
| Recreational scuba | Depth and pressure within training and equipment limits | Secure crown and verified seals | Unidirectional bezel is an elapsed-time aid; use required dive instruments | Water-resistance check is prudent before demanding dives |
| Saturation or specialised professional diving | Prolonged or specialised pressure exposure | 200 m marking alone is insufficient evidence | Professional systems and procedures required | No Pelagos 39 saturation certification is documented in the cited material |
When should I have the Pelagos 39 water-resistance checked?
Arrange a current water-resistance check before demanding dives if the watch has been opened, struck or is overdue for maintenance. A pressure test can identify a problem that is invisible during a casual inspection, but it cannot make a damaged crown or gasket safe by itself.
Situations that warrant extra caution
- The case or crystal has taken a significant impact.
- The crown no longer screws down smoothly or sits flush with the case.
- The watch was opened for repair, regulation or another service.
- Condensation appears beneath the crystal.
- The watch has been exposed to salt water and has not been rinsed.
- You cannot establish when its seals were last inspected.
Tudor states that periodic servicing through Official Retailers and Service Centres is needed to guarantee optimum performance. Service timing should be handled through those channels rather than inferred from the 200-meter label.
What is the safest way to interpret the Pelagos 39 rating?
Use the rating as a capability class, then apply the condition of the individual watch and the demands of the activity. For swimming and snorkeling, a fully secured crown and sound case are the key checks. For recreational scuba, the specification is appropriate when combined with proper training, dive equipment and maintenance. For saturation or other professional profiles, seek explicit model-specific certification.

The practical rule is simple: screw the crown down before water exposure, never adjust an unscrewed crown underwater, rinse the watch with fresh water after salt water, and obtain a water-resistance check after damage, case opening or uncertain maintenance history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear the Tudor Pelagos 39 in the ocean every day?
Yes, normal ocean swimming is consistent with its published 200-meter rating when the crown is fully screwed down and the watch is in good condition. Rinse it with fresh water after each salt-water session and dry it afterward.
Does the Pelagos 39 need a dive computer if I use its bezel?
Yes. The unidirectional bezel is an elapsed-time reference, not a replacement for the depth, decompression and gas-management instruments required for scuba. Follow the equipment and procedures specified by your training agency.
Can a rubber extension make the Pelagos 39 safe for deeper diving?
No. Tudor’s rubber extension can add up to 110 mm of length for wetsuit fit, but it does not alter the case’s water-resistance rating or add professional-diving certification.
What should I do if the Pelagos 39 fogs up after swimming?
Remove it from water immediately and have it inspected by an authorised Tudor service channel. Condensation indicates that moisture may have entered the case; rinsing or drying the outside cannot correct that problem.
