If you like the look of a NATO strap but not the extra strip of fabric beneath the watch, consider a two-piece nylon watch strap. Its separate halves attach at the lugs, leaving the caseback uncovered. That changes the feel and sensor access, but it also gives up the one-piece NATO’s stated ability to keep the watch on the strap if a spring bar fails.
What makes a two-piece strap different?
A two-piece strap consists of two separate halves, one attached to each side of the watch at the lugs. A traditional one-piece NATO strap is a continuous strip that threads through the watch’s spring bars and passes underneath the case. The phrase “two-piece NATO” is used for NATO-style designs, but the reviewed retailer pages do not establish an industry-wide standard for that label.
Because the two-piece strap does not continue beneath the watch, it removes that extra layer of fabric from under the case. Retailers also identify access to a heart-rate sensor as a reason to choose this construction. Whether a particular watch’s sensors work with a given strap still depends on the watch and strap design.
Two-piece versus one-piece NATO

What to check before ordering
- Lug width: Measure the distance between the inside edges of the lugs, or consult the watch manufacturer’s specifications. The strap must match that width. NATO Brand USA lists widths including 18mm, 20mm, 22mm, and 24mm in its range; that is one retailer’s selection, not a guarantee that every size is available for every style. Check NATO Brand USA’s strap catalog.
- Attachment method: Confirm whether the strap uses standard spring bars or quick-release hardware and whether that setup fits your watch. “Quick release” is a product feature, not proof of universal compatibility.
- Length: Check the listed dimensions against your wrist and the watch. As one example, NATO Strap Co. lists an approximate length of 125/75mm for its Bond-pattern quick-release two-piece strap; confirm the current product details before buying. See the product specifications.
- Material and hardware: Review the listing for textile, buckle, and keeper details rather than assuming all NATO-style straps use the same materials or fittings.
A retailer example—and what its specifications do not prove
NATO Strap Co. lists a “Quick Release Watch Band | Nylon | Two-Piece | Bond,” made from ballistic nylon. Its product page says, “Manufactured of a durable ballistic nylon”; this is the retailer’s product copy, not an independent durability test. The page lists an approximate 125/75mm length. Which construction should you choose?
- Choose a two-piece strap if your priority is less fabric beneath the case, an uncovered caseback, or a separate-half strap in a NATO-inspired style.
- Choose a one-piece NATO if you specifically want its strap path behind the watch to retain the watch if a spring bar fails, and you are comfortable with fabric beneath the case.
- If neither option is an obvious fit, verify the watch’s lug width, spring bars, and sensor arrangement before choosing based on appearance alone.
