Every point below is Rye’s account as reported in that interview, not an independently verified statement of current company policy.
What the interview is, and how to read it
The interview, “Understanding Micromilspec: an interview with CEO Henrik Rye,” was written by Buffy Acacia and published by Time+Tide Watches on 30 November 2024. The article describes Micromilspec as founded in 2019 to supply watches as a military contractor, and as having begun releasing limited models to the public by the time of publication. Rye describes the brand as a microbrand whose niche focus can make it feel like an outsider.
Because the interview is more than a year old at the time of writing, its statements about production, materials and future plans describe the company as it was in late 2024. Treat them as a dated account rather than a current specification sheet.
Design starts with the unit’s identity
Rye’s central idea is that a design should capture the essence of a unit and what its members identify with. He describes possible design cues as either extensions of a uniform or subtle details that only the owners would recognize. Two examples from the interview show how this works in practice.

The Hercules cockpit example
One design draws on the cockpit of a Hercules aircraft during a night flight. The interview uses it to illustrate how a watch can echo the working environment of the people who wear it, rather than simply borrowing a generic military look.
The bodyguard unit’s color-coded bezel
A bodyguard unit asked for a bezel divided into color-coded sections that corresponded to its operational code language. Rye’s example of “black on box” referred to a designated entry point, which could be lined up by rotating the bezel. The point of the example is the process: a customer’s internal vocabulary became a functional element of the watch.
Function, form and the microbrand question
Asked to describe the brand’s priorities, Rye put function first: “As a brand, we always prioritise function and quality.” He acknowledges that customers also care about form, identity and storytelling, and he describes the company’s task as balancing those interests rather than choosing one over the other.

On in-house movement development, Rye made a point about price: “It would never be about driving up the price.” The interview presents this as a statement of intent. It does not provide cost figures or a pricing policy.

Field testing with soldiers
Rye says testing is mainly about collecting feedback under real conditions rather than generating laboratory results. The interview names four concerns that testers raise:
- Crown grip: whether the crown can be operated while wearing gloves.
- Size: whether the case is practical to wear in use.
- Bracelet snagging: whether the bracelet catches wrist hair.
- Wear: where the watch first shows signs of wear.
Rye also explains how the Field Testing Unit tells watches apart. Model name and serial number are placed directly on the dial so that soldiers can identify their own watch when several are set side by side, and he notes that the layout resembles a dog tag. The interview does not describe independent lab testing or standardized performance results, and nothing in it should be read as a certified durability rating.

Why mechanical movements suit some military settings
Rye says that in some military contexts, electronic devices, quartz movements and smart watches are prohibited because of traceability concerns. In that framing, an automatic watch’s mechanical movement is a practical alternative. This is Rye’s rationale as reported by Time+Tide, not a general rule for every unit or deployment, and the interview does not provide an independent security assessment of the restrictions. Readers who need to know what a particular unit permits should check that unit’s own regulations.
Materials: forged carbon and ceramic
Rye says Micromilspec used forged carbon in a custom project for Special Operations Forces. On ceramic, he describes its colors as the attraction, and says the company had made adjustments to reduce the risk of chipping, with ceramic included in its plans at the time. Those plans are a 2024 statement; the interview does not say whether ceramic models have since been released.
Production limits and civilian releases
Rye attributes the exclusivity of civilian models to two factors: a small team juggling projects, and production that is scheduled and booked once a year. He also said that civilian models use movements that become available after military orders are fulfilled, because those orders take priority. The U.S. Space Force watch
Asked whether the U.S. Space Force watch had actually been worn in space, Rye replied: “Not yet! But there will be signs.” At the time of the interview, then, the watch had not flown in orbit. The interview does not say whether that has changed, so any current claim about the watch’s use in space would need its own source.
Checking a Micromilspec watch before you buy
The interview is a useful guide to what the brand values, but it is not a product catalog. It names the Hercules, Field Testing Unit and U.S. Space Force watches, yet it gives no model-by-model specifications. Before comparing models or buying, confirm the following from current product documentation:
- Dimensions, including case diameter and thickness, since the interview’s comments on size are qualitative.
- Water resistance and crystal type.
- Movement type, and whether a model is in the civilian release that uses post-military movements.
- Current price and whether the model is in stock or on a production schedule.
- Strap or bracelet compatibility, especially if the bracelet’s snagging behavior matters to you.
Buy only from the brand or an authorized retailer you can verify. A listing that resembles a Micromilspec watch is not the same as an official one.

Use the interview’s own priorities as your yardstick: whether a watch works with gloves, whether its size is practical, how its bracelet behaves, and whether its movement suits the environment you will wear it in.
