If your iPhone or Apple Watch says “Updated Time Zone Information Available,” Apple has supplied updated time-zone rules for the device. It is normally a legitimate system alert. Keep the iPhone online, make sure automatic time is enabled, then restart the iPhone and any paired Apple Watch. The clock may not visibly change if the new rules do not alter the time in your current region.
What the time-zone alert means
Time-zone definitions are the regional rules a device uses to work out the local time, including UTC offsets and daylight-saving changes. The alert means newer definitions are available and need to be applied; it does not necessarily mean your current time zone has changed.
That is different from the device’s current time-zone selection, which identifies the region it should use, and from clock synchronization, which keeps the time itself current. It is also separate from an iOS or watchOS software update. Apple does not identify the cause of every individual alert, so the message alone cannot show whether a particular government changed a rule or whether you crossed a time-zone boundary. Apple’s time-zone guidance describes the alert and the steps to take.
What to do when it appears
- Connect the iPhone to the internet.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time and check that Set Time Automatically is on. Apple’s iPhone User Guide may show the label as Set Automatically; wording can vary by software version or context.
- Restart the iPhone using its normal power controls.
- Restart any paired Apple Watch as well. If the alert appeared directly on the watch, restart it too: press and hold the side button until the power controls appear, turn the watch off, then turn it back on.
- After the devices restart, check the displayed time and the iPhone’s selected time zone.
Apple recommends restarting the device and any paired Apple Watch to apply the available definitions. A standard restart is the first step; a force restart is not normally needed. Restarting can briefly interrupt active calls, workouts, navigation, or other activity.

Check automatic time-zone detection
Location-based time-zone detection needs its own permission. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and turn on Setting Time Zone. Apple says this lets the device use its location to determine the correct zone. Apple’s troubleshooting steps also recommend keeping automatic time enabled and installing available software updates.
If the iPhone’s time is correct but the Apple Watch is not, restart the watch and make sure it reconnects to the iPhone. Apple’s guidance includes restarting both devices; it does not mean the alert proves each device has a separate problem.

If the time is still wrong
- Confirm the iPhone has an internet connection and Set Time Automatically is enabled.
- Check that Setting Time Zone is enabled in Location Services.
- Install any available iOS and watchOS updates, then restart the iPhone and paired watch.
- Open Settings > General > Date & Time and check the selected time zone.
- If automatic detection is unavailable or continues to choose the wrong zone, select one temporarily: turn off Set Time Automatically (or Set Automatically), tap Time Zone, search for a city, and choose the correct result. See the iPhone User Guide instructions.
Manual selection gives you control, but it may become wrong after travel or a later regional rule change. Use it as a fallback rather than a permanent substitute for automatic detection when that feature should be working.
Apple notes that the automatic setting can be unavailable with some carriers or in some countries and regions. Screen Time restrictions or a corporate or school management profile can also gray out the control. If it is restricted on a managed device, ask the administrator before changing settings. If the setting is not restricted and the problem persists, contact Apple Support; contact your administrator for a managed device or your carrier if Apple’s guidance indicates carrier or regional availability may be involved. Apple lists these setting limitations.

Is the alert genuine or a scam?
A real Apple system alert should behave like a device notification and direct you to restart or apply the update. Similar wording in a text, email, webpage, or other message is not proof that it came from Apple. Do not follow unfamiliar links or provide an Apple Account password, payment details, a verification code, or install an unrelated app in response.
Dismiss anything suspicious and verify the date and time settings directly in Settings > General > Date & Time. Apple confirms that time-zone update messages can be associated with this settings area and recommends a restart. Check Apple’s official instructions rather than trusting a message’s wording alone.

Why the clock may not change after restarting
The restart applies the updated definitions, but the visible time can remain the same if the rules for your current region still produce the same offset. It may change if the new definitions reflect a rule that is already in effect. The alert does not predict that your clock will move forward or backward.
It also does not establish that daylight saving time has been abolished, that a particular country changed its policy, or that your device detected a new location. A database update can prepare a device for a future rule without changing the current display.

If the time zone keeps changing unexpectedly
Check whether Location Services and Setting Time Zone are enabled, whether you are near a time-zone border, and whether location or network information is unreliable. Review whether Screen Time restrictions or a management profile control the setting. A VPN may be part of a particular configuration, but the alert alone does not establish that a VPN caused the change.
If automatic detection keeps selecting the wrong zone, use the manual selection steps above while you investigate. If the setting is gray, the iPhone is managed, or repeated changes continue despite correct settings, seek help from the device administrator or Apple Support. For a calendar event that needs another zone, use Calendar’s own time-zone option rather than changing the iPhone’s system clock; Apple explains the distinction in its Calendar time-zone guide.
