The Urwerk UR-110 Torpedo tells the time with three hour satellites that travel along a vertical minute scale on the right side of an asymmetric dial. The passing satellite indicates the hour, and its position on the scale indicates the minutes. The control board on the other side of the dial adds day/night indication, small seconds and an oil-change service indicator.
This explainer is built from URWERK’s own technical documentation and brand history, plus Phillips auction records. It does not report personal handling of a UR-110, timing tests, comfort or wear impressions, so every performance figure below is the manufacturer’s published value rather than something measured here.
How the time display works
URWERK describes the UR-110 as a continuation of its orbiting satellite approach, and the time display is the reason the watch looks the way it does. The display sits on the right side of the dial. Three hour modules are mounted on planetary gears and travel along a minute scale that descends from 0 to 60. URWERK states that the planetary gearing keeps the satellites rotating in parallel.
The idea is that the watch shows the hour and minute in two different ways at once. The hour is not read from a fixed hand or numeral, but from which satellite is passing. The minute is read from where that satellite sits on the scale. Because the satellites move as the time advances, the reading changes shape over the course of each hour rather than simply rotating around a center.

Reading the time, step by step
- Look at the right side of the dial, where the satellites and vertical minute scale are located. The control board occupies the left side.
- Identify the passing satellite. Its passage along the scale is the hour indication.
- Read the minutes from that satellite’s position on the vertical scale, starting from the 0 at the top and following the scale toward 60.
- If the reading seems ambiguous near the transition between hours, check URWERK’s own operating instructions for your edition before relying on it. The published descriptions do not spell out the satellite-to-hour correspondence in numeric detail.
The control board
The left side of the dial carries three functions, each described by URWERK:
- Day/night indicator. A disk that changes appearance between day and night.
- Small seconds. A seconds counter on the control board.
- Oil-change indicator. A service-interval counter that URWERK says is reset when the watch is serviced.
The day/night disk
URWERK describes the disk as using dark Super-LumiNova to show night, white to show day, and a striped mixture of the two for dusk and dawn. The disk is therefore a light-dependent display of the time of day, not a second time readout.
The oil-change indicator
The indicator is a service counter, not a timekeeping function. According to URWERK, the counter resets during servicing at the brand, so an owner should not expect it to reset itself or through a routine user action. Whether a particular dealer or service center can perform the reset in your market is not established by the sources reviewed here; confirm it with URWERK before buying a watch whose indicator shows a long interval.

Movement and published specifications
URWERK’s official technical sheet identifies the movement as calibre UR 9.01, a self-winding caliber with 46 jewels. The table below lists the published values. The power reserve and frequency are manufacturer figures from the sheet, which is dated around 2012, not results from independent testing.

The unidirectional winding and twin turbine arrangement are described as the rotor’s coupling method. The published sheet does not give a timing tolerance or an accuracy result, so none is stated here.
Case, dimensions and versions
The standard specification gives the case as 47 × 51 × 16 mm, with a sapphire crystal treated with anti-reflective coating. Water resistance is described as pressure tested to 3 ATM. That is a test rating from URWERK’s sheet, not a recommendation for immersion or diving, and readers should not read it as a depth certification.

The design intent, in URWERK’s words
URWERK attributes the following statement to Martin Frei, whom the official brand history describes as a co-founder:
“The beauty of the UR-110 is in its apparent simplicity. We imagined time as a ‘silent journey’. There are things happening on the dial that are not obvious at first glance. Everything looks normal; however, they are everything but.”

Phillips has offered UR-110 examples at auction, and its lot descriptions record details that collectors can use to compare individual watches. These records are historical sales, not current price guides.
Phillips Decade One, lot 95
The lot is catalogued as a UR-110 Torpedo, reference UR-110, circa 2011, with case number G 11 0 16 and edition 16/55. The listing reports a titanium case, a canvas strap, an additional alligator strap and a fitted box. The recorded sale was CHF 63,500. That single result is one transaction for one numbered example; it does not establish what another UR-110 would sell for today.

A second Phillips listing for a 53/55 example
A separate Phillips listing describes a 53/55 example with a guarantee, instruction manual, fitted presentation box and outer packaging. It shows that completeness papers and packaging are documented for some lots. The listing does not establish that these items are typical for every UR-110 sold, and no recorded price is given in the material reviewed here.
What the records cannot tell you
The available auction records do not include a market-wide price series, a sales count, or population data for the UR-110. Treat the CHF 63,500 result as evidence of what one documented example achieved at auction, not as a valuation of the model.
What to check when comparing examples
- Edition and variant, including the number in any edition series (for example 16/55 or 53/55) and whether the watch is the standard UR-110 or the UR-110 RG.
- Case and bezel material as documented for that specific watch, since the published variants differ.
- Service history and the state of the oil-change indicator, because the counter is reset at servicing.
- Provenance, guarantee papers, instruction manual, box and outer packaging, and whether the included straps match the listing.
Current authorised inventory, service charges and regional service availability are not established by the sources used here. Confirm those points directly with URWERK or an authorised dealer in your market before committing to a purchase.
