Vaer’s two R1 chronographs covered in Time+Tide’s April 1, 2024 launch article are the stainless-steel R1 USA Rally Chronograph in cream and the black PVD-coated R1 Tactical Chronograph. They share the same reported 40 mm case dimensions, Seiko VK63 meca-quartz movement and 100 m water resistance; dial colors, lume details and launch price distinguish them. The prices below are historical, not confirmed current prices.
How the R1 Rally and R1 Tactical differ

These details and launch prices come from Time+Tide’s April 1, 2024 article, not a current Vaer price list. The review describes the Rally as the brighter, more colorful option and the Tactical as the dark, higher-contrast variant.
Shared specifications reported in the 2024 article
Time+Tide reported the following dimensions and construction details for both watches:
- 40 mm case diameter, 48 mm lug-to-lug length, 13 mm height and 20 mm lug width.
- 100 m water resistance, with a screw-down crown and caseback. The chronograph pushers do not screw down.
- Double-domed sapphire crystal.
- Quick-release spring bars. The reviewed configurations included rubber, nylon and steel-bracelet options.
Movement and chronograph functions
Both watches use the Seiko VK63 meca-quartz chronograph movement, which Time+Tide described as assembled in the United States. The review gives a 40-month battery life and stated accuracy of −10/+20 seconds per month. Those are published specifications, not independent test results for this article.

The sub-dials serve three functions: a 24-hour indicator, continuously running seconds and a 60-minute chronograph totalizer. The movement combines quartz timekeeping with a mechanical-feeling chronograph operation; “meca-quartz” refers to that hybrid design.
What the launch-era US prices do—and do not—tell you
Time+Tide listed the Rally at US$469 and the Tactical at US$399 in its April 1, 2024 coverage. Those figures describe the launch-era models at that time. They do not establish today’s price or whether either exact configuration is in stock.

Vaer’s current collection and manuals use related but evolving names, including R1 Racing, RS1 Rally, R1 Oceanracer, R1 Tactical USA and R1 Rally USA. The current RS1 Rally page describes a 40 mm watch with 20 mm interchangeable straps, but it is not safe to assume that its details, price or availability match the 2024 Rally Cream or Tactical models. Vaer’s current page also differs from the 2024 review in specifications such as crystal description and assembly location.
Strap compatibility and choosing between them
The 2024 review gives both watches a 20 mm lug width and quick-release spring bars, so a 20 mm strap is the relevant size for those reviewed configurations. Check the exact watch’s lug width and spring-bar fit before buying a replacement: a 20 mm label alone does not guarantee compatibility with every older R1 variant or third-party strap.

Vaer’s positioning claim
Vaer co-founder Reagan Cook described the watch this way on the company’s early-access page: “The R1 is unique because it’s the only chronograph on the market that’s both assembled in the USA, and truly meant for everyday ocean use.” That is Vaer’s own positioning claim, not independent verification that no other chronograph meets those criteria.
