The Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier Seed VMF 5430 is a 3.40 mm-thick, hand-wound flying-tourbillon movement. Its tourbillon cage rotates once per minute at 9 o’clock. “Flying” describes how the cage is supported: from one side of its arbor, without the upper bridge used in a conventional arrangement. The result is a more open view of the rotating mechanism, not a guarantee of better accuracy in every wristwatch position.
What the Vaucher VMF 5430 is
Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier describes the Seed VMF 5430 as a manual-winding, extra-thin flying-tourbillon movement. It is a calibre, not the name of a finished consumer watch. The manufacturer’s English specification sheet, accessed in 2026, gives these figures:

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements of timekeeping performance. The Swiss watch industry federation reported the movement’s introduction in 2017 and likewise identified it as a hand-wound, extra-flat calibre with a titanium-cage flying tourbillon at 9 o’clock.
How a tourbillon works
A tourbillon places the balance and escapement—the parts that regulate and meter the movement’s energy—inside a cage that rotates. In the historical design rationale, that rotation was intended to average out rate errors associated with gravity when a pocket watch spent time in vertical positions. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes this as the tourbillon’s original purpose.

That rationale should not be mistaken for proof that every modern wristwatch tourbillon is more accurate in everyday use. A rotating cage does not eliminate all sources of timekeeping error, and the sources cited here provide no independent accuracy figure for the VMF 5430.
What makes the VMF 5430 a flying tourbillon
“Flying” refers to the cage’s support, rather than its rotation speed or a different timekeeping principle. In the construction described by the Fondation Haute Horlogerie, a flying tourbillon is cantilevered from one side of its arbor and has no upper tourbillon bridge. A conventional arrangement supports the arbor between the mainplate and a bridge, or between two bridges.
Removing the upper support leaves more of the cage visible and creates the impression that it floats. The one-sided support also makes careful poising important. For the VMF 5430, Vaucher specifies a titanium cage and a 60-second tourbillon positioned at 9 o’clock. The published material cited here does not give a complete engineering diagram of this calibre, so details of its bearing arrangement and drive train should not be inferred from the appearance alone.
VMF 5430 and VMF 3024 are different movements
Vaucher also makes an automatic Seed VMF 3024, but its specifications should not be attributed to the hand-wound 5430.

The figures are from Vaucher’s respective movement specifications. They distinguish the two calibres; by themselves, they do not establish that one is objectively better. The relevant choice depends on the finished watch and the wearer’s priorities.

The English VMF 5430 specification sheet lists hours, minutes and the tourbillon, but not small seconds. A separate French technical sheet for the VMF 5430/22 lists small seconds as well. Treat small seconds as a variant-specific feature and check the exact reference rather than assuming it applies to every 5430.

Vaucher’s specification sheet says personalization is available from 10 pieces. The Swiss watch industry federation describes opportunities to customize the bridges and cage, pointing to a specialist movement supply context. These sources do not establish a standard retail watch, current finished-watch stock or a price for the movement.
Vaucher’s expertise page calls the “Seed VMF 5430/22” “one of the slimmest tourbillons in the world.” That is the manufacturer’s comparative description of the /22 variant, not an independently verified ranking.
