Those generation cues help identify what a watch was designed to be; they do not establish that an individual watch is authentic, original, well maintained, or water resistant.
What makes the Datejust distinctive?
Rolex dates the Datejust’s launch to 1945, describing it as the first self-winding, waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock. That date display, alongside the Oyster case and Perpetual rotor, is the model’s defining idea. Rolex’s Datejust history places the Cyclops magnifier in 1953. Its official materials differ on when the date jump became instantaneous: its chronology associates that change with calibre 1065 in 1953, while its Datejust overview describes it as happening in 1956. It is safest to place the milestone in the 1950s rather than assign one definitive year.
This guide focuses on common 36 mm full-size Datejust generations. Reference mappings should not be assumed to apply to smaller Datejust variants.
Which vintage Datejust generation should I buy?
For common full-size models, the broad sequence is early references from 1945 to 1959, the four-digit 16xx family from 1959, the five-digit 16xxx family introduced in 1977, and the 162xx generation that followed the 16xxx line’s end in 1988. These dates and configurations describe the families, not the production history or condition of a specific watch. Fratello’s generation guide provides the specialist comparison; Rolex independently confirms the 1977 introduction of calibre 3035 and its rapid date-setting system in its watchmaking chronology.

| Generation | Typical cues | Best fit if you prefer |
|---|---|---|
| Early references, 1945–1959 | Families include 44xx, 50xx and 6xxx; the 4467 is identified as the first Datejust. Early examples were mostly precious metal. | An early historical Datejust and a specialist-led purchase. |
| Four-digit 16xx, from 1959 | Tall acrylic crystal; many examples have a stepped pie-pan dial. Calibres 1565 and 1575 do not have quickset date. | A more sculpted dial and classic four-digit references. |
| Five-digit 16xxx, from 1977 to 1988 | Flatter dial and calibre 3035 with quickset date. | Easier date adjustment while retaining an older-generation look. |
| 162xx, after the 16xxx line | Sapphire crystal; case proportions remain close to earlier variants. | A sapphire crystal in a vintage-era Datejust. |
The 162xx generation began after 1988, but that does not mean every 162xx watch falls within this guide’s 1945–1990 period.
How do Datejust references differ by bezel?
Within these full-size families, the reference suffixes point to common bezel styles. Material and exact configuration still need to be checked against the particular watch.
| Bezel style | 16xx family | 16xxx family | 162xx family |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smooth | 1600 | 16000 | 16200 |
| Fluted | 1601 | 16014 (steel), 16013 (two-tone) | 16234 / 16233 |
| Engine-turned | 1603 | 16030 | 16220 |
In the 16xx family, the fluted bezel on a 1601 is precious metal; 1603 engine-turned bezels are commonly steel, although gold examples also exist. Do not infer a watch’s material from bezel style alone.
What is the difference between a 1601 and a 16014?
Both are fluted-bezel Datejusts, but they belong to different generations. The four-digit 1601 is part of the 16xx family, typically with a tall acrylic crystal and often a pie-pan dial. It uses the generation’s non-quickset date movements. The five-digit 16014 belongs to the 16xxx family: it has a flatter dial and quickset date via calibre 3035. The 16014 is identified as a steel fluted reference, while the 1601’s fluted bezel is precious metal. Confirm the exact watch’s configuration and condition rather than treating the reference alone as proof of originality.
Do I want a non-quickset date?
On the described 16xx models, calibres 1565 and 1575 lack quickset date. To change the date, the hands must be advanced through repeated 24-hour cycles. The 16xxx generation’s calibre 3035 adds quickset, so the date can be adjusted more directly. If you often leave a watch unworn or rotate several watches, quickset is a meaningful convenience; if you prioritize the earlier design and do not mind the adjustment routine, the non-quickset trade-off may be acceptable.
Is an acrylic or sapphire crystal right for me?
The 16xx models discussed here use tall acrylic crystals; the later 162xx generation is notable for sapphire crystal. The 16xxx generation is a bridge between those cues: its flatter dial is a change from the common pie-pan profile of many 16xx examples, but the cited guide does not characterize the 16xxx as the sapphire-crystal generation. Choose based on the specific reference and your preference for the look and feel of its period configuration, not on the assumption that newer crystal means better overall condition.

What should I check before buying a vintage Datejust?
A reference and approximate production period tell you what configuration to investigate, not whether the individual watch is genuine, original, serviced, or safe to wear in water. Evaluate the watch as an example, not just as a reference number.
- Establish the claimed reference and period. Compare the stated reference and approximate date with the expected generation and bezel style. Treat any mismatch as a reason to ask for an explanation and expert assessment, not as proof by itself.
- Assess the configuration. Have the dial, hands, bezel, crystal, case, movement, and bracelet examined against the exact reference and period. A reference-level guide cannot certify those parts on a particular watch.
- Ask for service records. Request available invoices or service documentation and clarify what was replaced, serviced, or left untouched. A lack of paperwork does not by itself establish a watch’s condition.
- Arrange an experienced inspection. For a private purchase, use a watchmaker experienced with vintage Rolex. A visual checklist or plausible appearance cannot guarantee authenticity; the source set does not establish a single check that proves it.
- Verify water resistance separately. Do not assume an old Datejust remains waterproof because the model was originally described that way. Do not put it in water without a recent professional pressure test.
Early watches deserve particular caution: the specialist guide characterizes them as potentially fragile and challenging for an average buyer to service. That is a reason to plan for careful expert assessment, not a guarantee that every early example is problematic.
Bracelet details also require context. The guide notes Jubilee bracelets could have folded links or later solid outer links, with the shift beginning around 1974. Bracelet construction alone is therefore not a reliable shortcut for assigning a generation or date.

What does Rolex Certified Pre-Owned establish?
Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) watches are sold through participating Official Rolex Retailers and returned to Rolex workshops, where original configuration is verified and components including the case, bracelet, and movement are checked. Rolex says CPO watches are serviced and receive a new two-year international guarantee from sale; it notes waterproofness and original-precision exceptions for some of the oldest models. These claims apply to watches sold through the CPO program, not every second-hand Rolex. A private-market watch should not be described as Rolex-authenticated simply because it looks plausible or comes with papers. See Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned program details for the program’s scope.
How should I think about price?
There is no sound single price range to apply across 1945–1990 Datejusts from the information available here. Asking and realized prices can vary with reference, material, originality, condition, service history, geography, and sales channel. Compare the specific watch with recent, relevant transactions before committing; a generation’s age or reputation alone does not establish its value.
